Bought this product and for the majority of the time i loved it! design looks great and sat nicely beside my macbook air. After some solid use of transferring movies back a forth from the macbook air to this device, it suddenly stopped working. I met with an apple genius who told me that the software had been over run? He advised me to try and restore the hard drive, and if i was unable to do that to contact G-Drive. I had no such luck on restoring the drive.

Really wish this worked better, hope it doesn't happen to you.

I will no longer be using a G-Drive products for my hard drives.

I love this hard drive. I have the 128GB Macbook Air and I store all of my movies on this drive since they don't fit in the Air. I take it with me everywhere, it's much smaller and thinner than it looks in the photos. I've never had any drive issues with it at all- highly recommend it. I wish I had gotten the 1TB, but that was my bad not G-techs at all.

    G-Tech 500GB G-Drive USB

    • Written by from Candiac

I bought the drive over a year ago with my Mac Air and for 11 1/2 months it worked well. When midnight came on the last day of the year it just stopped working - now it just clicks.

Love the compact design but it isn't worth much as a back-up drive. By the looks of the reviews of the other back-up products on the Mac site this one isn't alone.

Very disappointed in Mac for selling this junk.

I like the design and the sleekness. It doesn't take up much space. However, after using it for one year, it died.

    Good Device

    • Written by from Charlotte

First external hard drive that I've ever purchased. Wanted to backup photos from my MacBook, however it synced up with Time Machine as soon as I plugged it in and backed up my entire Mac. Worked flawlessly (I hope!). Very easy set up. The device is very small. It's probably as large as some of the smartphones on the market and has a nice finish to it. Should be very easy to store in a briefcase.

Really. After NOT heavy usage and no travel this started to sound like a bad New Year's noisemaker - clunking. I stored movies on it - couldn't repair it.

    Extremely disappointed

Failed after less than a week of LIGHT USE. Will be sending it back for repair or probably replacement. Good thing warranty is for 3 years but still. All my data are stored in this drive as backup. Now they're all gone. Geez. :|

    Slim, portable, external hard drive

    • Written by from Little Rock

This product works just like it is supposed to and is very compact. The appearance very closely matches that of my macbook air, which is a nice touch. I have used it to back up my itunes library and also as a time machine backup. I don't travel much, but it will be great to travel with if I need to bring along saved movies or other data.

don't buy this device. it is highly unreliable. this is the second G-drive slim that i've purchased. i love the design but both of them mysteriously stopped working within a year. i've just come back from 3 months in india and used the device to store all my photos and now i can't access any of them. the drive turns on and spins but take AGES to try complete the simplest task and then doesn't do anything. if anyone has any ideas about how to get the images off the drive i'm be very grateful.

    Do Not Buy this Product

    • Written by from Greenfield

I bought this drive to transfer over my entire old lap top before buying a new one. It had all my pictures, music and files from the last 5 years. After less than 6 months of having it, the thing died for no apparent reason. I did not have a back up of this drive yet.

I took it to a data recovery specialist who is looking at it now. He is not even sure if he will be able to recover my data and if he does it will cost me 500 dollars which I'm not even sure is worth it. Do Not Buy this drive!!

Even if I can get it replaced under the warranty, I'm not sure If I want it. I may just cut my losses and buy a different drive from a better company.

Newest of four G-Tech Drives ...

    • Written by from Hillsboro

I'm not sure what you guys do to your drives to make them fail in five minutes or less. They aren't designed to be thrown against the wall, dropped on the floor, or driven over with your Yugo.

This is the fourth of four G-Tech drives (the others are FW800 and USB) and I have all four up and running with various machines. Never had so much as a hiccup.

This particular drive is extraordinarily light and thin, making it the perfect companion to the MacBook Air. I put my iTunes library on mine, saving the SSD space for work-related files and apps.

If you're looking for a top-notch USB 3.0 drive, I don't think you can do any better than this little jewel.

    You might lose everything.

    • Written by from Conway

Using Time Machine when I updated to Mavericks the external hard drive wasn't recognized. Completely lost everything that had been backed up. Being very diligent in backing up every day as you can imagine this was very disappointing. So I'll go spend a little more money and see if my next external hard drive will hold up.

    Total waste of money

    • Written by from Market Harborough

Only used it a few times to back up files. It did nothing but sit in my desk drawer between uses (when it moved up to the desk surface) and in under a year it just stopped working. I plugged it in, and nothing showed up. I see a number of other people have had the exact same problem. Avoid this drive like the plague.

    Unreliable - doesn't work

Have probably backed up my Mac to this device 7 times in total over several months - sits on desk and doesn't move. Now it's unreadable and completely useless. DO NOT BUY.
