    noisy

    • Written by from Chelmsford

I dont know if my drive is faulty or not but it is really noisy compared to what the reviewers are saying. I hear it spin up and down all the time. If it has been idle a long time and it spins up suddenly it makes this weird sound and the best way to describe it would be a old 56k modem. I think something is rubbing on a moving part of the drive. case maybe? Its the first day with the drive and im not impressed. Its pretty loud compared to my imac. The only thing good about it is compared to other 3.5 inch drives there is no fan noise from a fan. Yes its not as noisy as a drive with a tiny fan whirling at 5600rpms but quiet it is not.

Great item: the drive has a good looking aluminum enclosure and a top quality hard drive inside. It's fast, and very quite. Comes with great extras and a reassuring warranty. I only wish I'd bought it sooner.

    So far so good

This unit is fast and powerful, and I'm loving the USB 3.0 transfer speeds. The Eco mode is an excellent idea, as I often forget to boot down the drive after using it. The drive has been in use for about six months now with no problems at all.

I use this drive primarily for backing up my computer with Time Machine. It has worked without problems for over a year now. It is fast, quiet, and it doesn't overheat. I would not hesitate recommending this product.

    Just what I needed

    • Written by

I just got this drive and I love it. It feels strong, and is well built. It works great and was pretty simple to setup. I've already put all my backups, photos and music on it. And the Time Machine does the job in spades and relieves me of a potential unexpected data loss headache.

    Too good to be true

    • Written by from Patchogue

I bought this drive last week and it worked fine for a few days, now it won't even read on my MacBook Pro. I literary tried everything, using different cables, letting it rest for a while and then trying again but nothing. Now I don't even know what to do since I moved all my files to the hard drive. I called LaCie and they told me to try in a different computer (Windows) and I did, but I had the same results. Definitely taking it back to the Apple Store to see what my options are, hope I can get my files back... :(

Absolutely Amazing and Easy to Use!

    • Written by from Calgary

Pros: easy to use, quiet, great functional design, compact, great transfer speed, 2 year warranty with Lacie (comes with purchase, you don't need to pay extra for the warranty), amazing compatibility with mac (has the ability to use for backup, works well with 'i'apps like iMovie and iPhoto, etc), also great for windows to store files, I've never felt it heat up, Has different power connecters for travellers.

Cons: The power adapter is pretty short so I have to ensure that I'm sitting relatively close to an outlet while it's connected to my mac with the usb (which is also pretty short). I'm not a fan of the aluminum feel, as well as the sharp edges. It's also relatively heavy for it's size so be careful not to drop it, it'll cause some damage.

    it simply works

My iMac was fast filling up with all my audio and video recordings and I really needed a second backup drive. Having looked around, I opted for this one, and I haven't been disappointed. It works perfectly, looks great and I've experienced absolutely no issues with it. I might buy another for my son's computer.

This drive is perfect for storing photos and music. I've set it up for daily backups with Time Machine. It was easier than I thought (I'm an utter technophobe). This is the first real plug and play I've had. It works well and is very fast.

I found myself needing more TBs of storage space for my media collection. I wanted the new drive to be fast to transfer files to my Macbook Pro and also iPad for when I travel. This unit is well designed and constructed. Works just as advertised, very fast and easy to use. The data transfer speeds are very good with USB 3. Very happy with this.

Don't expect to use it on a wireless network

    • Written by from JERSEY CITY

Works just fine when it's hard wired to my MacBook Air via USB, but when I wire it to my Airport Extreme (2nd Gen) and it won't stay mounted. I can connect initially, but after awhile it goes to sleep and the only way to connect is to unplug and restart it, which obviously isn't what I hoped to use this for. Maybe it's just Apple's way of forcing me to buy a Time Machine?

Very good hard drive, bad software!

    • Written by from San Diego

I bought this hard drive yesterday from an Apple store in SoCal, When I first connected it to my MacBook Pro I found some software inside, so I started installing these softwares and also partitioned the hard drive then started using it as a time machine to back up my mac, all this while it was connected to my mac using the included usb cable and it took several hours to finish backing up (my lap top hard drive is 750 GB). then after it finished, I connected it to my Mac Mini and also used it as a time machine to back up but without installing the included software again.

The next day, I disconnected it from my mac and connected it to the Airport Extreme to try backing up wirelessly as the apple store associate has assured to me that I can do this, but what happened is that I got an error message #1 saying that this hard drive is not available or someone tried to do some tricks with it! I tried several ways to get this problem fixed but couldn't.

I finally decided to uninstall all of the included softwares that I already installed in my mac and then formatted it by erasing all the data using the disk utility. After that I got a plain hard drive with even no name and had to rename it again, anyways, I think that has worked fine as after I connected it to the Airport Extreme, I was able to use it as a time machine and started backing up wirelessly, but till now I don't know how long it will take as the back up started about an hour ago. I'll make sure to update my review if anything went wrong during the back up process.

Conclusion: the drive itself is a good quality but the included softwares is just a pain and I wish if the manufacturer decides to remove them and keep just one security software.

    Low quality ac adapter

Great product!!! A higher quality or better insulated less flimsy power adapter would have been nice, but the one that comes with it works fine.

This drive works very well, and takes up little space on my desk. It looks awesome - the aluminum enclosure is well built and it matches the color of my mac perfectly. The USB3 interface is fast. I'm very satisfied.

The drive was very easy to install, and so far it's been working well for me without any issues. I'm using it on a daily basis for Time Machine backups and for regular file copying. It's pretty quiet, and has good transfer speeds. So far no complaints.

    Great drive

I got this drive a couple of months ago and I'm very pleased. The transfer speeds are very good with USB3. It's great that there's plenty of storage. I've accumulated lots of video and photos over the years, so I always welcome an opportunity to offload files to an external hard drive. It's also worthwhile mentioning that the drive is very quiet. Overall great product.

USB 3 not impressively fast and case sometimes hits 90 degrees

    • Written by from OLD BETHPAGE

got this for my new iMac , to use for my iPhoto library. My original Lacie USB 2 was painfully slow and I noticed that iPhoto now runs about twice as fast with USB 3. That's pretty good but it does not impress me, especially after hearing all the marketing talk about how fast USB 3 is supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, this USB 3 drive with 3 TB of storage is a good one to get, especially at this price point but my super large iphoto library still seems slow. I plan to get Thunderbolt in couple months and hope that Thunderbolt will provide the super fast speed i need. It does run quiet like others have said. The case looks great but is a little cheap compared to my older Lacie Quadra drives which are made of thick aluminum. I've had this 3TB USB 3 drive for about two weeks and was shocked at how hot it runs compared to the USB 2 model. The case sometimes feels hot, like around 90 degrees whereas my older Lacie USB2 has always stayed cool to the touch for past two years. So don't stack this with your other USB drives, in case it hits 90 degrees on you.
