Lost my data with this drive

    • Written by from Vancouver

This drive worked fine for the first 2 weeks, then completely failed and I lost some important data. Replaced the drive and the very next day it failed. Will never buy this again and I caution you against it. Use at your own risk.

I have had two of these LaCie Flash Drives, and both stopped working after having worked fine for several weeks. Do not buy these.

    Stopped working after 2 weeks

It was only after my drive stopped working within two weeks of purchase that I read the reviews. The one-star reviews accurately reflect my experience. I had written data on the rugged drive. I then deleted the source. Walked over to the computer that I was going to copy it to, and then the drive was never recognized again. I tried about 3 different computers. It really did stop working.

If the drive actually works, only use it as a shuttle drive to immediately copy the data to another location. Don't delete the source data until you are sure that the data has been copied to another location.

The drive really is fast when it works.

I was able to exchange the drive for a similar model at the Apple store. I'm going to see how many weeks of usage I can get out of this one.

I'm not real thrilled with this product

I bought one in early 2013. It looked sleek and worked nicely at first. I carried it on my key chain. I really liked the fact that there was substantial metal holding it to the key chain. Many USB drives have flimsy plastic loops which quickly break.

But then the orange cover started slipping off and falling on the floor when I took my keys out of my pocket. Then the cover became lost for good back in October 2013. I just kept the bare metal part on my key chain. Yesterday I plugged it in to take a backup of files and it would not mount. I tried repeatedly with Disk Utility on my Mac without any success.

I'm sure the lack of cover didn't help but I've had several other USB sticks that worked fine for several years.

    Poorly constructed

The LaCie brand is usually top notch and dependable. I purchased the thumb drive at the apple store when it came out. The tip of the USB drive that sticks out kinked on me and the drive broke. It is really sensitive and doesn't take that much pressure to bend. The files on the drive are gone and the drive is cooked. I would not recommend LaCie thumb drive, especially for the price. You can get more storage and a better built drive for a lot less.
