Good Devices and Work as Claimed...IF you have a strong Wifi Router

    • Written by from Calgary

When I first began installing these devices I noticed I'd lose them from the device list. I'd have to reset the router to get them reconnected so they could be rediscovered. As I began to actually depend on the devices it got more and more annoying when they'd drop off the device list. I had wifi extenders which seemed to help, but I'd still lose devices.

For various other reasons I opted to upgrade my wifi router. The new one seemed to work worse than the old one, with ALL the WEMO devices dropping off in one gulp. I blamed the router...but before junking it I thought I'd try some "tricks" to reduce interference and to promote a stronger signal. They worked. Turns out my router was fine...it was where it was placed, and interference from my neighbors' routers that was creating all my wifi troubles.

So I've had a good solid several weeks of strong wifi connections and reliable use. The built-in rules for WEMO are very nice but tying the WEMO devices to the IFTTT system really adds some unique functionality. I can turn on my bedroom light and, at the same time, the lamps turn on as well. I have a heater in my garage that only turns on if it's actually cold outside. When my family comes home the outdoor lights turn automatically when my smartphone tells them we've returned to the area.

I have 16 wemo devices now and I fully intend on adding at least two more (so that all the lights on one floor are WEMO enabled).

But I'll agree with some of the other posters...if you've got a weak wifi signal, or wifi interference, they're annoying as heck to set up and maintain. And even if you do set them up, despite the interference/weak-signal, they may not function as you'd hoped (may not connect completely to IFTTT services).

So only get these if you've got a strong, reliable, wifi signal where-ever you plan on placing the wemo.

Wemo does not adjust for sunrise and sunset

    • Written by from NORFOLK

I bought two light switches about 6 months ago, for outdoor lights. Easy to install and set-up. However, despite setting and re-setting the rules numerous times, they will not turn on at sunset and off at sunrise per the rules I set. It may start following the sunset/sunrise rules, but then does not appear to keep up with the daily changes or change to daylight savings time. Turns on now at 5 pm even though sunset is at about 7 pm. Minimalist instructions and support make it difficult to troubleshoot. I have to rate it a 1 because the main reason for purchasing this product is to automate the lights so that they go on at sunset and off at sunrise and it does not do that reliably.

    Sunset doesn't update daily

    • Written by from Perryopolis

I have to redo the setting to turn on at sunset every few days. Say I set it today and sunset is at 5:52 instead of updating daily it will stay at 5:52 until I redo the setting. Whats the point of having sunset as an option if it doesn't update on it's own?

I like the idea and had it working fine... then the app started crashing... now that is all it does! Switches are no use without the App. The App is not stable.

Stay Away - Remote Access No Longer Works

    • Written by from Georgetown

These devices worked great until the latest firmware and app upgrade. Now you can't access the devices remotely which is the whole point of owning these devices. Support from Belkin is ridiculously slow or non-existent. Do yourself a favor and don't spend your money on these items until Belkin gets them working again.

    Same issues as others

    • Written by from Southaven

set up was easy enough. however switch has about a 30% rate of being "found" on the app. Could not control/find lights from outside my actually house/remotely. which is the point. Not sure how others are experiencing zero difficulties? I will open the app... some times the devise are there... most of the time they are not. if away from home wifi and on LTE network this seems to have zero ability to perform.

    Wemo Motion

    • Written by from baltimore

I own (3) wemo switches and (2) light switches. They all work, after the second firmware update and 2nd version of the iPhone app.

HOWEVER, I recently tried the motion product and had to return it. It simply doesn't work. People must not be buying it because it's intermittent and doesn't stay connected or active in the app.

I tried my iPhone and my iPad.

I am really disappointed because I really needed the motion to work. Hope they keep working on it.

Hope this helps some of you.

Working well with 4 switches & 2 outlets

    • Written by from Houston

I have four wemo switches and two outlets installed. Installation was very straight forward. Connect to wemo wireless for configuration and then back to your wireless network. Timer functionality works. Lights come on and turn off as directed. And it works remotely.

The only problem I have is controlling a switch by sunrise & sunset. That doesn't seem to work despite setting the location correctly.

I have ordered four more wemo switches and will use them for all outdoor lighting and fan functions.

    Does Not Work

    • Written by from Denver

It will not stay connected to wifi. It works for awhile and then just disconnects. It is then a pain to get connected again. I have unplugged, restored, etc and it keeps happening. Don't waste your time and money.

    Belkin App Needs Work

    • Written by from Westbury

The switch works fine… but the App is limited in its ability to configure lighting control schedules. It's very primitive compared to other Apps that I am presently using. I have two homes with WeMo devices, the App does not allow me to easily switch between homes to control my WeMo devices in both locations. For a remote control product this is a major flaw!

    Garbage Product

    • Written by from Edmonton

The switches when they do work, which is almost never, are intermittent. Issues connecting to wireless routers, issues with Remote Access, no support from Belkin other than referring me to the setup guide. Keep away from this product! There are better alternatives.

    Disappointed

    • Written by from Markham

I had purchased this product with the hope that I could use it to control items in our winter home in the south.
After spending a great deal of time trying to get this unit to operate properly I have give up.
I would not trust the WeMo to control anything.

Unable to remain paired on wifi

    • Written by from Cupertino

This thing is horrendous. It's not capable of staying paired to wifi, but the regular WEMO switches do just fine. Even if you put it RIGHT NEXT to the wireless radio, it wont see it. Setup is a pain as it will only see 1 wireless network, which may be your neighbors... which begs the problem... "Now what?"

Keep working on it guys, this is very Microsoft of you. Cool Idea, TERRIBLE implementation!

    :)

Went on a trip to barbados and was able to remote my switches from there.
Bought 3 of them, one with motion, sends me an email when someone walks by, neat.
Only problem I have is cannot see them on my home network until i replug them, but on 3g or any other wifi work great.

    Used 6-7 Months Before Commenting

    • Written by from White Lake

I waited several months before commenting but I think they've gotten better after 2-3 firmware and app updates which will knock them down/offline. The first 1-2 updates I had difficulty getting them rediscovered but the last had no problem. I would wait and do any app/firmware updates at home. I tried once from a friend's house and it wouldn't rediscover until I got home and un/re-plugged each switch. The only time I couldn't see a switch was when I accidentally turned off the wall switch controlling the outlet.. USER error!

    Good idea, poor execution...

    • Written by from New York

I have two of the Belkin WeMo switches and had them running for about 2 months now.

    General
they are a bit on the larger side, 4.5in high/3in wide and 1.5in deep (at the thickest part), but will not occupy both outlets on your typical wall outlet. Installed on the top, the lower could be still used.

    Setup
Well it is easy, but also very limited:
    - Download the application from the App Store onto your iOS device
    - PlugIn the WeMo Switch into the AC Outlet
    - Go to Settings, WiFi and connect to the WeMo network
    - Launch the WeMo app and select your WiFi Network, add password if required.
    - When you're successfully connected to your WiFi network, the Remote Access is enabled automatically and you can personalize your device with a specific name, a device icon, add your email (to get future product updates or just more advertisement in your inbox) and you can select to remember your WiFi settings, which will make the addition of further WeMo devices easier.

    Experience so far:
Beside delays in the app to discover the switches they also have a tendency to loose connection to the Belkin Cloud - which is needed to access them remotely.
Also one thing important to know: The WeMo app is just supporting one network, that means if you have switches in your house and your vacation home you won't be able to control them all together from the app.
I also linked the switches to the IFTTT website - which is a great idea BUT does just support one switch at the time and has the same problem with them loosing connection/their remote accessibility.

    Conclusion
As said in the title, it's a good idea but could be improved very much. The connection issues is a main concern but also the limited control a user has on the security on this devices makes me not recommending them.
