The Only Airplay Speaker That Has Impressed Me

Most airplay speakers elicit a "meh" from me. I've tested the Zeppelin, the Beolit, the Libratone Lounge, and the iHome. They're fine. This unit has impressed me. It's compact, attractive, powerful, and sounds better than its rivals. Sometimes significantly. Klipsch clearly put a lot of thought into it and then priced it to undercut some of their immediate competition. Good. It officially goes on my list of things that aren't terrible.

    Two Notes:
    1. Apple should have this in all caps, but this speaker (like all the others) does not currently work correctly with the iPhone 4S. There is a software glitch that has been addressed in the iOS 5.1 beta, but has not yet been pushed to normal phones.

    2. Be sure to download the Klipsch App. It makes setup very easy, and shames the convoluted process employed by alternatives like the Beolit.

I'm an old audiophile who has been dying to get something I could place on the deck for entertainment for the warm months. A friend bought one of these and loves it so thought I would give it a try. Not being a computer "geek" I was a bit hesitant on hooking this to my wireless network but it only took about ten minutes and it was up and running! I've had a chance now to do some serious listening with lots of different music on the G-17 and it sounds fantastic (soft or loud)...very accurate sound with unbelievable bass for its size. It's very solid built and my wife seems enamored with the looks too. One reviewer here seems to be having trouble unless its close to his router, but not the case with me...it streams flawlessly. I have heard you need to have a good wireless signal to make these new Airplay speakers shine and my older, basic router seems to be doing the trick. Congratulations Klipsch on a quality product!

I've been an airplay (formerly AirTunes) fan for a long time via AirportExpress. Spending the cheese on this unit has taken my love for wireless home audio to a different level. The amount of rich distortionless sound at any volume that this small sound bar creates is amazing! We installed it in our kitchen and absolutely love it. It's expensive, but totally worth it if you consider yourself an audiophile. I just ordered my second unit to install in my sunroom.

    - Small Size & Sound quality is very good. Better than iHome, Logitech & Philips.
    - Airplay function via WiFi is easy to setup.
    - Recommanded you to buy a good WiFi router to get better connection. Cheap router will always loss the connection.
    - Connected with iPhone 4GS and the new iPad without any issues. (IOS 5.1.1)
    - Not compactable with Synology NAS AirPlay server. Hope Synology & Klipsch can fix the problem.
-The selling price is a bit higher. If it can reduce US$100 - 150 is better. :)

    Not perfect!

I have, as of now, 5 sound system in my home and all of them use Klipsch speakers.

I do like the sound of the G-17, but, don't try to listen some pop or dance music with a lot of bass on it. It will distort and you don't even have to listen at loud volumes to ear it.

Other than that the sound is very good, even if I liked the sound of the Zeppelin Air more. But, the Zeppelin was too big to be put where my G-17 is. Because of that, I consider the G-17 a good compromise.

    Great sound - bad connectivity

The Klipsch G-17 really has a great sound for a speaker this size, unfortunately, it has WiFi connectivity limitations! Seating next to a WiFi router it works wonder, a few feet away the signal will keep on droping, making the G-17 unusable with AirPlay.
    Really disapointing.

For it's size the bass and audio level this speaker produces is amazing. Also it's appearance is a work of art. Haven't experienced any connectivity issues like others have claimed to experienced, I will keep you updated.

    Major connectivity problems

Based on sound, IF the G-17 could maintain a wifi connection, I would give it 5 stars. Sound is superb for an Airplay speaker. Unfortunately, the unit cannot maintain a wifi connection for even the duration of a single song. I have the unit in a room where every other device has no problem maintaining a connection strong enough for 1080p a/v signals; all of these devices have no connectivity problems in the room: smart TV, bluray with build in wifi, directv wifi connectivity kit, ipad (x4), iphone (x2), ipod (x2), xbox 360 .... you get the idea - every other device we have maintains a strong connection and never drops. G-17 drops during every song, and rarely comes back without rebooting. The blue connectivity light always shows a good connection, but the unit drops constantly. It's not the control/source device, which we have tested by leaving sitting in the same room as the router - it's the G-17. As someone else said, just not yet ready for prime time - very frustrated after spending hundreds of dollars on the unit that is, essentially, useless.

When it works, it sounds wonderful. But be prepared to place the unit close to a wireless router and/or hardwire it with an audio cable. The range is suspect and the unit drops off the network constantly. Not sure this unit is ready for wireless primetime...
