    Hi-Fi With Style

    • Written by from Carlisle

I was skeptical about buying a bluetooth-based speaker system for my iPhone because I was worried that there might be some decomposition of the audio quality due to the wireless connection. My worries were evaporated when I fired up my new Big Jambox. For those of you pecking at the dirt for a wireless speaker, you've just discovered one of the best seeds around.

Indoors, the Big Jambox preforms like nothing else; it puts the Bose wireless speaker to shame, and makes any AirPlay system look foolish. The bass tones are rich, full, clear and powerful but in perfect sync with the mids and highs, of which are also excellent. Any room can become full of crisp audio within seconds, and you can keep your iPhone/iPad/iPod on your person.

Outdoors, the Big Jambox is more of a Jekyl/Hyde kind of player. With the LiveSound audio processing on, the audio quality is fantastic, especially when placed on a patio table, per sae, in front of a wall or structure. If, however, the LiveAudio processing is disabled, there is a noticeable drop in clarity; the highs seem too muddy and overcome by the lows and sub frequencies.

The design of the Big Jambox is also a niche feature. For those of you who want something that will either blend in to the woodwork or spark up a conversation, the Jamboxes, in general, provide such choices. They're somewhat avant-garde, crisp, clean, but simple and easy on the eyes. The only problem I have with the Big Jambox is it's size and the lack of a carrying case or pouch. Otherwise, a fantastic product.

My final verdict; if you are living in a home where space is as valuable as the electrical bill, and/or you want a piece of art that interacts with the real world, the Big Jambox is perfect for you.

    Impressive

Jawbone took what worked for the jam box and just made it bigger--and louder. We needed a louder speakerphone capability for my iPhone for conference calls and this was exactly what we were looking for. It sounds and works great for this. Not too mention music, movies, and videos sound great too. The packaging and accessories it comes with are impressive too. Just looks and feels like a high quality product.

    Small but great!

This little brick continues to impress! Has all the cool styling and quality that I had been looking for. This little brick pounds out some nice highs and lows. Has so many cool features and is a cinch to use. The quality is there, just wish it was a touch less expensive. (my only gripe)

    Amazing

I bought a bluetooth speaker for $100 but the sound was mediocre at best so I decided to get a more expensive one. After reading countless reviews I came to the conclusion that the Big JAMBOX had the best sound, even better than the BOSE Soundlink. After using the JAMBOX for a month I've realized that my investment in good sound was worth every penny. The sound is crisp, strong, distortion-free and all-around great.

    Sound fills the house

    • Written by from Albuquerque

Nice product, clean lines. The Bluetooth range is impressive, and like with any speaker, placement is key for optimal sound quality. The Big Jambox offers good sound with an impressive bottom end. There are grippy rubber feet on the unit to keep it from walking across the table at max volume. That's a nice feature, as the device is pretty light.

Set up was a snap. I can not comment on the battery, as it remains plugged into the wall for my application. I also leave it on at all times, and there is no annoying white noise or buzzing while it is not receiving a signal and I keep it at full volume. Response is immediate, and it does not clip between tracks.

A remote would be a nice addition as I tend to pump up the volume for certain songs, and when the phone rings, I find myself fumbling with the iPad, and that's not the best solution. I played with the speakerphone a bit, but choose not to use that feature. I have other products with sound settings similar to Live Audio. Nice gimick, I don't use those features as they require selective inputs, or you get garbage out.

Four stars because I just don't give five. I would recommend this product to a friend. I think the price is about $50 higher than necessary, but it's in line with similar products.

Quality Product, Has Potential, But not yet there.

    • Written by from Houston

High Quality. Bought this over the Bose Soundlink. The major selling point for me was the battery life. Still have its shortcomings that can be improved.

My suggestions to really enjoy the product:
    1. Set the right personal expectation on performance. Though for it’s size, it puts out amazing sound, don’t expect this speaker to match a high end hi-fi system or you’ll be disappointed.
    2. Use a good input source. It is said – garbage in, garbage out. Expect the speakers to pump out rich sounds but don’t expect it to compensate for low quality input.
    3. Voices and vocals are very clear. But this drowns out the bass. On songs with a lot of bass, use your ipod’s EQ settings. I had to use treble reduction (not bass boost!) on some of my 'bass-heavy' songs. I wish I could even reduce the treble one more notch… sample of songs I’m talking about: Apologize from One Republic, Coming Home from P. Diddy; However, songs from Adele, Michael Buble, Savage garden sound great.

How the Big Jambox can improve: Create a better built-in music profile that can be downloaded. Bose’s ‘warm’ sound is my standard of excellence. The Big Jambox seems to have the hardware capable of making better sound but is not yet there. This for me could fulfill the product promise of ‘it gets better with time’.

    No Silent Mode

    • Written by from Minneapolis

The hardware is solid. Good sound in a small footprint.

Unfortunately, the product is unusable in many scenarios. Specifically, there is no way to disable the startup, shutdown, pairing, and un-pairing notification sounds on the Big Jambox. These loud tones are played any time the device powers up, powers down, or comes within range (or goes out of range) from one of its paired Bluetooth hosts. There is no way to disable these sounds, unlike on its smaller counterpart, the regular Jambox.

What's worse is that these notification sounds do not obey the current volume setting. So, even if the volume is set to low, these sounds play at full volume.

As a result, this device makes loud noises all the time. So, for example, if you ever thought of leaving this plugged in and using this as a speaker in a baby room, or in another part of your house, forget it. It will play the unpairing sound any time your iPhone or iPad goes out of range. And play the pairing sound the next time you are back in range.

    The "Wow" Factor

    • Written by from Wynnewood

When I first saw the Big JAMBOX I thought, this won't have any bass to it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It has a great depth of sound. It also connected easily via bluetooth with my iPhone 5. I really like crispness and volume it gives to music, the ease of use, and I am going to buy another one. I was also surprised that my iPhone doesn't have to be so close to it for it to receive the music perfectly. All in all, it is a great device if you love to listen to music. It can also blast the music very well without any distortion! Excellent.

Descent sound, good Bluetooth connectivity, defective batteries.

    • Written by from Fort Lee

Two units so far and each one had a defective battery.
It seems to be a manufacturing problem.
    Maximum charge is only 3/4.
Sound is OK for these tiny speakers.
    The Bluetooth works well.

Great when it works, but POS when it doesn't. Unfortunately, it's a POS most of the time. Pairing with our Mac mini is basically non-existent. Pairing with our iDevices is good most of the time.

Magnificent Sound, Bass, Hi-Fi, Clear / No Cracking, Distortion

    • Written by from Richmond Hill

I've compared these with the Beats Pill - yes, I know, it's not a proper comparison, but I have also listened to the Small Jambox too - and these speakers as just fabulous!

    Pro:
    - crisp and clear sound, even on its maximum volume, no distortion at all!
    - great bass, not too much, just right
    - the Hi-fi, surround-sound, feature is undeniably noticeable, and what a difference!

    Con:
    - would have liked a carrying case

It's worth the price, by far, for a portable and Bluetooth speaker system!

    Build quality issues

    • Written by from hermanus

From the launch of the small jambox, I have not spent a working day without it.
Unfortunately to say it is not the same for the Big Jambox, less than a year later the rubber on the passive subs have disintegrated.
The speakers are made of the same thickness material, not long till its rendered useless.

    Rather disappointed.

    BIG JAMBOX

GREAT speaker with super sound!!!! Works super as a speaker phone, nice added feature. Had two BOSE SoundlinksII (which I returned) because the BLUETOOTH connection would not work ... BOSE did return my money without any issues and understood that the BLUETOOTH is "buggy". I think the BIGJAMBOOK sound is a lot better then the BOSE.

    Immersive Sound

    • Written by from BIRMINGHAM

You feel each note, clearly, crisply, powerfully. Easy to pair multiple devices, one touch calling for those pesky conference calls. Listen all day without plug power needed. Big Jambox is Awesome, what else do you need to hear? Mini Jambox has been decimated by Big Jambox.... Pricey you say? Worth every Russian Ruble , European Euro and Czech Kroner and Digital Bit Coin a dollar can buy.

    Silent mode now available

    • Written by from Franklin

The latest version 2.0 of Jambox software provides a silent mode which mutes the sound effects for startup, shutdown, pairing, etc. Unfortunately this is not documented even in the latest manual. This became available roughly April 2013.

To activate silent mode, hold down the Talk and Minus button while powering it on. The sound effects will stay off until you hold down Talk and Plus buttons while powering on.

Before silent mode was available it was difficult to use this device in a public situation as the sound effects would periodically happen (apparently responding to Bluetooth operations from mobile devices in the audience). It could also not be discreetly powered on and off. It was a mistake to ship the device without that functionality, however it's water under the bridge and it works OK now.

Another design shortcoming which is a constant, persistent irritant to customers is failure to use a standard micro USB connector. The USB cable is needed for programming the speaker behavior, such as voice caller ID, voice announcements of battery life & pairing status, etc.

Designers of ultra-miniaturized devices can at least argue the fractional millimeter saved is worthwhile. By contrast the Big Jambox is a full size device and there is no space issue. If you lose the proprietary USB cable, you can't program the device. This problem is not unique to Big Jambox, it is so common the EU has passed legislation to outlaw proprietary USB charging connectors on mobile devices.

Besides these two self-inflicted and unnecessary design mistakes, the audio quality is pretty good, max volume available is good, form factor is good, Bluetooth connection speed and reliability seems good.
