This is the BEST printer I have ever owned. Set up was super easy, scanning ability is efficient, and easy. Color is great. The only issue is that it tends to be on the slow side.

Lots of 'features', too bad 'print' feature doesn't work that well (both in frequency and consistency)

Scenario 1 - you need to print something fast. Click print AND the HP printer decides it needs to clean the ink jets. You get the lovely message 'This may take a few minutes'. There is no way to cancel. Turn machine off and on and it will start all over again. HP support will tell you that you're not using the printer enough. There's a reason for that, see scenario 2...

Scenario 2 - and this is a frequent one - You click on print and NOTHING happens. The printer icon will say the printer is 'idle'. Yet nothing has been or is in the process of being printed.

Scenario 3 - You've done nothing to your printer. It's directly connected to your iMac. It's not on a network. Yet, every now and again (the machine likes to mix it up with scenario 2) your printer icon will inform you that the printer is not connected. Mind you the printer is HARD WIRED connected to my iMac. NO loose connections here just a loose connection in that HP thinks it sells printers that work with iMacs.

    Great Printer

    • Written by from VIRGINIA BEACH

Everything about this printer is great! I've owned mine for over 6 months now and have not had any problems. I use it with my Macbook Pro, my IPhone, and my IPad. It is accessed wirelessly. I like the fact that you can buy the cartridges individually as needed. Highly recommended!!!!!

    Dont Buy

    • Written by from Slidell

I read all the reviews praising this printer and disagree. I have owned HP printers exclusively since I stopped using an Apple Printer that I had for my Apple //c. If you want something expensive that takes up a lot of space, is costly to use and does not work, this is the printer for you. This Office Jet 8600 is the worst of the line and I am surprise HP put their name on it (their previous printers worked well). Everything every one has said that it does wrong has happened to me with this one.

I bought the extended factory warranty and am on my 3rd replacement printer. They do not send you a new printer to replace the new one you bought, just a refurb. One that they sent me was missing parts. The last one they sent me required me to remove parts from my broken one and put them on the refurb. Not one of the 3 has worked correctly. To get a replacement you have to spend a long time on the phone with someone going thru all the printer tests that prove it does not work.

Print quality is poor and the cartridges are expensive. The printer software does not let you use the printer when it thinks the cartridges are empty. When you replace them, they are still full of ink. They are expensive-4 replacements buys a new printer. Looking on blog sites, HP has been successfully sued for this, but it has not stopped the practice.

It took 3 HP printers to find one that was not defective.

    • Written by from Fort Lee

Not a good sign when two out of three new printers are defective.
Epson and even better a Canon seem to be better choices when reliability is important.

    Sad User Interface

    • Written by from Petaluma

Makes OK prints, scans, etc. when it works, but possibly the worst user interface of any device I've ever used. Increadibly poor software. Horrible UI. At least once a week I'm tempted to throw this thing out the window. It will default to a flaky mode that defies sorting out. Does not allow certain functions to be selected and will take it's own sweet time to print the wrong file in the wrong way to the wrong destination. Very un Mac-like in every respect.

    Worked Flawlessly For One Year

Purchased on November 25th 2011, died on November 26th 2012. Large, ink is expensive and the printer is not cheap. Don't waste your money.

    Not Worth It

    • Written by from CALGARY

Hp products are not overly compatible with Macs. Not to mention the poor service and short life span of the products. I am not looking to replace my all in one. I have hardly used it but it goes through so much ink because it is always cleaning the printheads. It also likes to disconnect itself from the computer.

    Works fine for me

    • Written by from Cool

I have used this printer for over a year now, on my Time Machine network. It works fine for printing, scanning, and copying. Print from iMac or iPad. Double-sided regular paper, single-sided card stock, photo paper. Easy install. Expensive cartridges, but seem to last longer.

    Slow and colour is "muddy"

    • Written by from Edmonton

We purchased this printer after being told it was a cheaper alternative to replacing a colour laser. It is definitely not. It is slow and the colour printing is nowhere near the quality we had expected. We have an 8 year old Canon that does a better job for colour brochures etc. The fax and scanning features seem to work well though.

    Great Printer! Great Connectivity.

Flawless setup on our macs at home. The scanning features, AirPrint, and everyday printing is just amazingly simple and works perfectly. Never an issue connecting wirelessly. Great AppStore support for iDevice apps.

    Doesn't work as advertised

    • Written by from Las Vegas

I have a need to print cardstock (65 & 90 lb) The spec, salesman and HP's site all say that this is possible on this printer. It is NOT.

I purchased this printer, tried to print cardstock jams EVERY time. Spent 2 hours on the phone with HP support, they told me to clean the rollers (on a new printer) which I did. They told me to re-install the drivers from scratch, I did. They told me to try different paper, I did. Finally they said that there are problems with the driver, here, try this NEW one (after 60 minutes installing the OLD one). I got to a point where they had no more suggestions and simply told me to return the printer which I did.

The new one has the SAME issue. I dutifully performed all the steps that I had with the previous printer. STILL doesn't accept cardstock.

I had the same problem with an older model that was supposed to print cardstock. I thought buying a new one would be the answer, it was not. Never again will I purchase an HP printer, they simply don't work as advertised.

I am surprised at some of the negative reviews. The output is of very high quality. Everything works and it is easy to set up. Although I do a lot of printing, I rarely have to buy ink. I cannot say enough about how fast it is.
Seriously, it has awesome features such as wireless printing. No more having to move my lazy rear end and look for a printer cable. It even scans my expense receipts wirelessly. Too good a product to get a bad review.
