    HP 8600 Review

I've had nothing but trouble with it. I called HP Customer Support and was directed to their "Leadstream" Department. I was told by Leadstream there are hardware problems and I should unplug and re-plug it. It worked for a while and then failed to print again. When I went through the drill another time, it printed 5 copies rather than one, wasting ink and paper. When it prints it is fine, but the printer is utterly unreliable.

Called HP again. They told me to plug the printer into the wall and not a power bar. I told them I would use an extension cord given where my outlet is located. They said that may not work.

I am going to return this while it is still under warranty. HP is a great company, but this product was apparently released before it was perfected.

This is a horrible printer. It has issues connecting to WifFi. To scan I had to activate scan each time - and it doesn't work. Have to reboot the printer n times. VERY SLOW scan and printer speed. Gosh...I could go on and on..
Prior to this I owned a Canon and it was PERFECT. The only reason I went with HP is at that point it only supported AirPrint.
I just might take a loss and buy a Canon now that they have firmware update for airprint.
One of the worst printers ever...Buyer Beware

I replaced my Samsung laser jet with this printer. It was better to replace with a new all in one ink jet because of the cost of the laser cartridges. The quality of the print is good. I love the AirPrint feature as I have 2 iPads and one iPhone. This printer does it all and is great for home use. Very easy to set up. I run desktops with Mac OSX and Win 7. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a great value in an all in one printer.

HP could care less about Apple. They focus on PCs. They care so little their printer doesn't work 50% of the time. I could list a dozen faults, here are a few
    1. Chooses to clean its sensors and you can't opt out (always goes into this printless state after you've chosen to print something not waiting til its idle)
    2. Scanning kind of sort of works. Sometimes not. Can't figure out what I do or don't do to make the machine decide whether or not to scan.
    3. printer is hard wired to iMac, yet I get error messages that it's not available.
    4. you have to 'wake' the printer any time you want it to do something. Push something on its little panel. Otherwise no printing..
LOTS of features that you'll never use. The 2 you need (print and scan) work only 50% of the time without a hitch.

    Excellent Printer

I bought two of these in the last two days, one for home and one for our property manager. The home one replaced a 7-year old Epson inkjet printer/scanner. The 8600 is heavy, it weighs 25 lbs!

It took about 20-30 minutes to setup each Pro 8600. They are connected wirelessly to a Linksys E4200 at home and an E2500 at the office. I have had no trouble with scanning files, printing, etc. The duplexer works just fine. I have used "cheapo" 24 lb inkjet paper and 20 lb general purpose laser paper with no problems.

The office 8600 is at about 50 feet from the E2500 router and there are 5 interior drywall partition walls separating them. AirPrint from my iPad 3 works great.

I have learned over the years that the installation of HP (and Brother) printers is easy if you follow the instructions step-by-step. You cannot get creative. Just follow the 8600's on-screen instructions for the initial setup then load the DVD and follow the instructions step-by-step. I have had to "fix" a number of computers where the owner didn't follow the instructions.

Oh, by the way, both printers are connected to PCs, one Win 7 Home Premium and the other XP Pro.

Scanning doesn't work with OS X Lion

Out of the box, the printer was pretty straight-forward to set up. Hooked it up on my network no problem via the web interface using Safari. Image Capture couldn't open a session to the printer for scanning! HP Scan couldn't open a session either - timed out. Then I went on to my nice, clean Macbook Pro running the latest version of Lion and it too couldn't open session. Then I tried using my iMac 20 running Snow Leopard and it couldn't even see the printer via Bonjour!
I would not recommend this printer due to the fact that out of the box it failed to configure correctly under OS X Lion for scanning. For printing it worked just fine; I'm sure the copy feature works as well. But I really need the scanning portion to work. And it didn't. I shouldn't have to go surfing the web for fixes on a brand new printer. Buyer beware!

Problems, problems, problems! Works perfectly with my IMAC Mac OS X 10.7.3, but not at all with my Macbook Pro OS X 10.7.4. I have had one of the best MAC certified technician trying to fix it with no success. We are waiting in line at HP trying to get some support. There's got to be someone who know's how to fix this???

    Lion Compatible AIO Printer

HP's OfficeJet Pro 8600 eAIO is definitely a Mac OSX Lion-compatible, multifunction printer.

Just follow the Start Sheet instructions. They make the setup easy. Our included DVD has the latest Lion-version software that is listed on HP's support website. We installed, used the Wizard, and were able to wirelessly print from an iMac & MacBookPro. Our iPad & iPad2 printed directly via Apple AirPrint. We did not try HP ePrint. Only the power cord and phone line (for fax) are attached.

We did have to download and install a Scan Patch for Lion from the HP website. Printing, copying, faxing, and scanning all "just work".

I purchased this elsewhere a few days ago for fifty dollars less than listed here. I had it set up and running on and iPhone, iTouch, Macbook, iMac, and an HP PC in 20 min. Operation is very intuitive, fast, quiet. It looks great, very sleek and clean. I love the fact that the only wires are for power and a phone line Seems more solidly built than any other HP printer that I have owned. This really compliments the apple products we own.

I had no trouble setting up this printer on three PCs and a iPhone and iPad. If you use the software provided it is a snap. The unit has a ton of features and it is perfect for the gadget guy. The apps are an extra bonus. I Iike the machine and would recommend it.

Very difficult to connect to your wireless. Have to shut the printer off several times before it finally connects. I have been an HP customer for a long time and this is a product that I would not recommend unless you have the patience to turn on and off several times. Print quality is low at best - expected more from HP.

I have had this printer since the model was introduced and I rate it 5 stars.

My computer is a Mac Book Pro and I have an iPad and iPhone 5.

This HP system drivers are always updated whenever a new OS comes out.

The HP customer service is always there for me, not that I call often!

The most amazing thing is the E print, from where ever I am. I can be sitting in my car or an airport and print something to my home printer. How great is that!

    BETTER THAN SLICED BREAD

    • Written by from CHELAN

I am gluten intolerant so bread isn't that great but this printer is AWESOME!!!
I'd been living the reclusive life of a "print Nazi" and "Ink" had become a line item on my monthly household budget.
    It was a grim existence.
And then I bought the HP 8600 and VIOLA!
I purchased this in November 2012. I have a family of 5 and we put this to the test over Christmas break. We didn't need to replace the first cartridge (black) until late January 2013. In February we replaced Magenta & Cyan. It's mary & we still have the original yellow in the printer.
I have since erased "Ink" from my month household budget & will be enjoying a spa treatment every once in a while for my smart efforts.
This printer was RIDICULOUSLY easy & efficient to hook up. Don't miss the mobile ap for iPad & iPhone which will allow you to scan & print from mobile devices. Also don't forget to give HPe-print a whirl - very handy for traveling & needing to send a document to the home printer.

    Great All-in-One

    • Written by from San Marcos

I've had this printer for over a year now and it's been trouble free. I can print to it from my iPhone and iPad as well as a laptop and iMac. It is totally wireless working off an Airport Extreme router (but not hardwired to it). When I first got it I subscribed (free) to some of the apps HP offers, but realized I was using a lot of paper and ink when some of them printed out daily. Now I just turn them on (crossword puzzles and recipes) occasionally. It takes a bit of setting up and the manual is meager. But the online info makes up for that. You have to explore the scan app to fine tune it to scan the type of item you are using - photo, doc, etc. But once you learn all that's available you can use all its features to the max. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it's definitely for those who are willing to put some time in to explore what it can do. Otherwise, you can probably find a featureless all-in-one that will just "plug and play." I think that those who've had trouble are those who have not taken time to read and follow ALL the directions. You're getting a lot with this printer.

    GREAT Printer !!!!

This printer has been awesome. No issues at all. Connected to an Airport Wi-Fi Network immediately. Air print works from iPhones, iPads, iMacs and MacBooks instantly with no setup. Purchased it primarily because of the ink savings. With kids in school ink costs were incredibly high. Still using the starter cartridges that came with the printer. Scanning works flawlessly as well. Highly recommend.
