    Connection Problems with Macs - not Mac friendly

    Works flawlessly with my son's PC Windows machine.

    However, for some unknown reason, it would suddenly stop printing from my iMac when I installed a new printer cartridge. All other functions worked (except scan to computer which never worked). Hard reboots would restore printer connections.

    Now nothing works. It's only 3 months old. I run 10.9.1 on my mac laptop and 10.8.6 on my desktop iMac. Neither can print. Test prints from computers using the HP software work fine. Static IP addresses didn't work (my ISP doesn't allow static IPS anyway I found out). I have now spent many hours trying to get this printer to print. It is the worst HP printer I have used since my first one in 1990.

    Not recommended

    - Ethernet auto-negotiation with Netgear switch not working, manual config required
    - DHCP with Synology Server not working, manual IP set-up required
    - Scanner via LAN not working on all MacOS 10.9 machines (three), Printing unreliable
    - USB connection is working, needed in parallel to LAN to use scanner, so only one of three computers can use the scanner.
    - password protection of config webserver unusable
    - No WPS-EAP support for WIFI
    - no ntp support, time has to be changed manually twice a year.

    This printer is advertised as a network printer for small workgroups and offices - it's not!
    Worst network set-up for any printer I've ever encountered, took me hours to get all functions working in a LAN with three computers.
    Not recommended for unexperienced users or people who have no time to waste to find workarounds for bad programming.

    Not for a MAC

    Works ok with my PC for now, but on an IMAC OS 10.8.5 very unstable. Can't scan to computer can't print wireless. From the 8600 control panel I can connect to my wireless network ,also during installation, but when I try to print, the imac can't find the printer. Updated firmware used latest software for OS10.8. After many 8600 factory resets, uninstalling, reinstalling, purging printers, and deleting anything with HP from the IMAC's Library still no success. The latest drivers from Apple for HP made things really bad. With every suggestion from the HP web experts the situation degraded. I'm using it wired to network, wanted an air printer. Scan to computer option disappeared from scan options under HP utility on the IMAC. If you are using a MAC and you like spending a lot of time trying to get a printer to work as advertised without success, the 8600 is the product for you.

    I agree with all the negative reviews

    I had had an older but similar version of this HP. It worked fine for my husband on his non-mac but didn't work well for my daughter and I with our macs. I wanted a new printer and much to my horror he bought yet another HP . Seemed he believed everything the sales rep said but nothing I said! This printer has wasted hours of my time. I have had 2 network techie people here who can't figure out why it won't print wireless. I don't mind using a hardwire for printing but that doesn't solve the impossibility of getting it to scan. Even hardwired, the scanner can't seem to find the computer. Aside from hours wasted trying to get it to san, I have also spent over 2 hours on the phone with HP. Nothing was resolved except in the end, they blamed the problem on Apple. I am ready to throw this piece of junk out the window.

    Too many bugs

    The scan/email functions won't work after a few months and HP cannot resolve the issues. However, they will consume hours of your precious time with tech support that ends with no resolution.
    Don't buy this printer.

    Worked fine for 10 months

    Worked fine for 10 months - then imager went out making the scan/copy/fax function worthless. It's a known hardware failure. I would not recommend. I'm out of warranty and out of luck.

    Bad printer

    When I bought this printer the store employee told me that it would take about 20 minutes to get the printer installed. Well, after about 2 hours of work, I did get it installed on the LAN. However, none of our computers would recognize the printer even though the installation process indicated that the printer software had been successfully installed on each computer. At that point I left the whole mess and left the office. Surprisingly, the next morning our computers did recognize the printer. Unfortunately, when the computers gave a command to print a document, the printer only succeeded in printing about five pages before it quit working. The printer continued to attempt to pick up sheets of paper, but it failed to do so. We tried different weight sheets of paper, but no success. We have used many HP printers without serious problems, but this one is something different.

    Has been awful as a networked printer

    Wireless functions unreliable

    A simple review:
    Wireless function unstable and intermittent.
    Same result when wired to a network, intermittently nonfunctional.
    Air print feature worked at first, then hopeless.
    THIS PRINTER IS NOT A NETWORK PRINTER OR AN AIRPRINT PRINTER.
    All this experience on a professionally set up and maintained network with no other problems.
    Enough said.

    WIFI Problems

    If you use repeaters to extend your wifi, the 8600 will be trouble to set up and to use wirelessly. The 8600 confuses Network Names (SSID) and there is no easy solution. Be careful. I regret buying it.

    HP must be writing the good reviews, this printer is A DOG

    50% of the time, the printer doesn't scan, doesn't print. Chooses when to clean its sensors (OBTW it chooses to do it, right after you've click on the print button). The printer is connected directly to the workstation yet its software tells me it's not available. You have to 'wake up' the printer (jab at its panel) to get it to do something. Oh it has features --- that you'll never use. HP - if it doesn't print or scan, it is useless. PIECE OF JUNK

    Failed the first week

    Front touch panel control screen failed after 3 days (went to solid white) making it useless except for printing from the computer. On day 5, the printer stopped feeding paper making it completely useless. Returned it to the store I bought it from. Turns out others on the HP forum have had similar problems with this printer.

    Great printer - unreliable at best with MAC

    This was a reliable, high quality printer that I used with my pc. Since I switched to a MAC OSX I have had nothing but trouble with the printer. I've downloaded the newest drivers from HP multiple times. It doesn't interface well with the computer and is a constant headache. It just stopped working again today, with or without a USB cable. The printer is still fairly new, and I'm highly disappointed. I've had a history of success with HP but will not be buying HP anymore with my MAC.

    It fell short

    this printer does not allow any paper thicker than regular old printing paper. Card stock NOPE! Photo paper NOPE! Went through too much hassle to get the printer then this, and an exchange only made me more mad.

    Cannot connect to airport using WAP/WAP2

    Very frustrating. I was not able to connect to my AirPort using a password. Only if I set my network to not require a password that I was able to connect. That is not acceptable. Then they point you to diagnostic tools which they only have for Windows. What is HP thinking this is not 1995 anymore.

    I am returning this and buying an Epson.
