AMAZING! Definitely worth the price tag.

I was reluctant to spend nearly $180 on earbuds; however, I decided to take a chance on the Bowers & Wilkins C5's and I am so glad I did. These in-ear headphones are AMAZING. The sound quality is superb, the headphones stay put thanks to the "secure loop" and are comfortable on top of it all. I would definitely recommend these headphones - especially to anyone reluctant to the higher price tag - take the plunge. You'll be glad you did.

    A melodic snuggle

    • Written by from houston

Like most folks living in a world of portable listening, I have a graveyard of retired headphones and earbuds. The headphones always feel like too much stuff and the earbuds are either very uncomfortable, or they fall out and the sound is less than desired.

The C5 is my pick. Comfortable...stays in with the very clever and adjustable loop...and sound great. These are great when flying, riding a train, isolating yourself in a noisy place or working out on a rowing machine. I can't say enough about the comfortable fit and their 'stay-in' ability. The real test is a 17 hour flight from Asia on your iPod...no problem. Ears felt fine at the end of the flight. It was if I spent a great day with Pink Floyd in my head...chilled an lost in the brilliance of David Gilmour's soaring guitar solos.

    not for everyone

    • Written by from Gresham

I bought the B&W C5 for 2 reasons. I wanted a really good sounding in-ear headphones. B&W has a good reputation for their products and these DO sound very good. the 2nd main reason: I need a pair that stays put in my ears when I'm at the gym or doing any outdoor activities. for me, this is where they fell way short. I was intrigued by the design. seemed like a good way to solve my problem of the in-ear pods that always fall out or need to be secured constantly. I tried all the different sized "bud" adaptors that came with but nothing solved the problem. running on a treadmill, doing sit-ups or even mowing the lawn, these C5s never stay in. I really wish there could've be someway to try before buying I could've gone with a different brand. again, these do sound really good BUT given my main reason as fit I'm only giving these 2 stars.

Great design, great sound, but extremely poor quality

The sound is great and the shape is nice. However the quality of the cord is poor. 3 of these headsets were defective after a couple of months...

Great Sound, Good Noise Cancellation, not so comfortable

    • Written by from Red Bank

I've been looking for high quality headphones that stay in place when I wear them and I have to say, these do just that. The only downside is that after about an hour's worth of use, they begin to hurt my ear and feel extremely uncomfortable. The sound is pretty good though, probably on the upper end for it's price range, the noise cancellation is also decent.

    ...thinkin' a good choice

    • Written by from Saint Louis Park

There lots of opinions to be read. Suffice it to say the sound is stunning. My Bose QC3 cannot hold a candle to the C5's fidelity. Only time will tell about quality related issues. With a 2-yr warranty, I feel comfort that I'll get the value and enjoyment even though a bit pricey. Recommended...

    Good sound but poorly built

    • Written by from Oakville

I bought my C5 in December 2011 and had to replace them twice since then. The same problem both times - sound volume goes low in the right phone after a few months of usage. The third C5 I was given as a replacement had a bad control switch from the beginning, I guess its top is slightly misplaced. When I click on it once to pause, it increases the volume instead. Double or triple clicks are simply impossible. Anyway, I decided to keep it because I spent some $$ to ship the previous C5 back to B&W and if this one breaks, I'll simply through it away and buy anything but B&W.

    Extremely comfortable, great sound.

    • Written by from Brooklyn

The title says it all. These are the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned, and the sound is clear and natural. They won't blow you away with bass, so it depends what you're looking for. My only issue has been the cord, which is absolutely impossible to straighten, leaving it hanging down in a vaguely slinky fashion with a several inch diameter. The microphone is great, but the controls could use just a tad more refinement.

    Very Good Product

    • Written by from Edmond

So I have tried out several different models and must say these are the best all-around in-ear headphones I have tried. I sometimes wish the cord was a little longer and not so stiff, but the sound is so smooth and just the right amount of bass.

Great sound, terrible build quality, atrocious support.

    • Written by from Toronto

I am on my third replacement pair of c5s. Like nearly one third of the reviewers here, my c5s (all three) have lost sound out of the left channel. B&W claimed they were upgrading me to a pair of P3s after having to replace my headphones for the third time. However they goofed up and sent me another pair of c5s. Since my last pair failed after one month of only using them at home, I'm not even going to bother unpacking these. I also own a pair of p5s (the remote cable failed twice—apparently they are using flawed and/or cheap cabling components). This will be my last bowers and wilkins product. Sounds great (though nothing more impressive than p100x from Sennheiser—which are significantly cheaper and infinitely more durable).

Comfortable, good sound - Issues with the cord

    • Written by from Sydney

This is the second pair of these I have owned. The first failed within 4 weeks of owning. The cable joint at the plug started to go, crackling in right ear bud, eventually no sound. These were replaced under warranty. The second pair have started to do the same after 12 months.

I'm not using these for exercise mainly at my desk at work and walking around with my phone in my pocket.

In terms of comfort, I have found these to be excellent. Sound quality is good, bass is nice.

Given the price point its a little disappointing to have the same issue again after 12 months.
If B&W can fix the cord issues I would have no hesitation giving these a 5 star rating.

Decent, neutral sound, uncomfortable, difficult customer service

    • Written by from Richmond

The sound on these phones is decent, equivalent to similarly priced products in the marketplace. They are particularly neutral, so if you are looking for heavy base I would recommend other options, but if like me you like to have your headphones get out of the way of the music, these are a good option from a sound standpoint.

That being said, these are uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They are heavy and stick out from your ears, which seems to put extra pressure on your ear canals (at least for me). I have also found that they are prone to electric shocks. I am not sure if it is a short in the phones themselves or static electricity, but the metal housings at times seem to shock me when they come into contact with my ears - not very pleasant. The sound gets them a 4 star, but the shocks bring it down to 1.

I've tried to get in touch with someone on the phone to talk about replacement. However after trying two websites and two different phone numbers I was still unable to talk to a live human. Incidentally, their service website is so poorly organized trying to find simple info like a phone number was next to impossible.

Caveat Emptor on these - I for one appreciated the sound, but will not be buying B&W again. There are too many other good manufacturers out there to put up with electric shocks and poorly designed service.

    Poor product & customer service

    • Written by from New York

The sound quality is great but as someone else posted, the earbuds will intermittently electrocute you. They also crackle sometimes, I'm assuming because of the same issue. It doesn't matter how good the sound quality is if the ear buds are unusable!

At first I thought I shorted something out by using them while running and exposing to sweat... which btw caused one of the ear buds to stop working for a day... under fairly standard use. So I sent them back and got a new pair. I've had this pair less than 24 hours and SAME EXACT issue! You get an electric shock in your ear, with the severity ranging from mildly annoying to mildly painful.

Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous?! When I contacted B&W their response was send em back. How about fixing the underlying problem? When I spend close to $200 on a pair of ear buds I not only expect an exception product, but if by some chance the product is defective or flawed I expect exceptional customer service.

    Excellent piece of engineering!

    • Written by from MANCHESTER

After owning a pair of MONSTER Turbine Pro GOLD Edition headphones, which I happened to lose, these are definitely better! For starters they have a tighter seal with one of the sets of the supplied earbuds and they stay in my ears....regardless of what I'm doing, and whether or not I'm using the built-in loops, unlike the Turbines I had which would lose a little the tight seal! They aren't quite as heavy and the build quality is just as good as my old pair as well! At first I tried them WITH the loops which proved a little uncomfortable in my Left ear after a little while find them so I tried them WITHOUT using the loops, and now I can I wear them for hours!

As with all earbuds though, you need to let some air get to your ears to cool them down at least!

Soundwise, I'd say there's a little more wider range in the lows, mids and highs with almost any musical genre, and a wider soundstage too than my previous pair. I use them a lot with my APOGEE Duet 2 Mac Audio interface which really puts them to their Full potential when listening to Apple Lossless Tracks bought from the iTunes Store!
Even hooked up to the iPhone, the C5s still manage to impress! I don't really have any issues with the leads either that some people have had with hearing whatever's in contact with them, say a shirt!

I still think though that they'll need a little more time to 'burn-in' as I've only had them a few days to really shine but apart from that, I think they are the best in-ear buds I've EVER owned so far, as well as the pair of P5 over-the-ear ones I've had for 2 years from B&W!

At £149.99 / $179.99 in the US these are a steal.....just get them and try them according to B&W's recommendations on their support site and you're very unlikely to go wrong!

I would NOT recommend this product.

    • Written by from New York

I purchased these In-Ear Headphones to use when running and lifting at the gym. If anyone is used to the impeccable way Apple presents/packages their products you will be very disappointed. The packaging is cheap and not user friendly. I sweat when I run, like I believe most people do - I shorted out one of the speakers. I received a second pair and they shorted out again. I would NOT recommend this product.

    Disappointed

    • Written by from Kemnay

I have had my C5's for about a year but they have had very light use. Loved the sound quality but, as others have commented, one ear always seemed less secure than the other so a bit of a struggle with fitment despite the different sized buds available. Never thought of mixing sizes but it's academic now as the right speaker has ceased to function for no apparent reason. Not happy.

    Total lack of quality

    • Written by from Mexico City

I had this headphones just a month ago from the Apple Store in NY and the left side has stopped working! And I can not even say that I'm a heavy user, I just used them probably one hour on a daily basis, not even in the gym so no sweet or water has been in contact with them. They produce very good sound but the design and overall quality just lacks what I had expected from a B&W product. Now the problem is that I can not return them as I live in Mexico city, what a shame.
