Terrible durability... 6 exchange in 2 years...

    • Written by from MONTREAL

The sound from these headphones is amazing. However, as many as pointed out, terrible durability. Exhanged my model 6 times (thanks from the included extended warranty). Bought these headphones in 2012, and just got my last replacement. The last pair lasted for 3 weeks (ok, I must admit, I tried to run with it and lost sound on the right side - same problem for the 6 replacement).

Hope B&W will correct this in future version.

Great Sound - Unreliable build quality

    • Written by

I have a very love/ hate relationship with my C5's (4th pair now). On the one hand, they are from the earphones I have tried, unparalleled in sound quality, with a great mix of crisp treble against deep, warm bass sounds, which are maintained even at full volume. They also have Minimal noise leakage, so people around me can only here what I'm listening to in absolute quiet. Great for public transport and social areas.

On the other hand, every single pair I've had has failed roughly 6-8 months into use. About 5-6 months in, the inner cord starts to turn blue (in every set I've had) and after a month to 3 months after that, the headphones fail. From my own assessment, this is at the 3.5mm end of the jack. It is possible that The reason the headphones fail each time is because of my own use, but being on my 4th pair, I'm not sure that this is the case. I've also had issues with the volume/mic control on two of my pairs. Lack of responsiveness from various buttons. The microphone also picks up a lot of background noise., which where I use it, isn't ideal.

If there is any testament to the sound quality, it's that I keep having the earphones replaced. The audio loop is very comfortable once you get used to it and fit it wit the right ear buds, and actually has a functional benefit of stimulating warmer bass. But buy these headphones with clear forewarning that they are subject to failure, and need very careful treatment!

I love these earphones! The sound is really clear, really nice. Unfortunately, they broke after a month. The left earbud stopped working. I'm gonna try to get them replaced... It's too bad because I LOVE the earphones.

Great Sound, Good Noise Cancellation, not so comfortable

    • Written by from Red Bank

I've been looking for high quality headphones that stay in place when I wear them and I have to say, these do just that. The only downside is that after about an hour's worth of use, they begin to hurt my ear and feel extremely uncomfortable. The sound is pretty good though, probably on the upper end for it's price range, the noise cancellation is also decent.

Not very impressed for the price.

    • Written by from Simi Valley

Great bass, decent treble, vocals were clear. But something in the sound was missing that just wasn't there. They also did not stay in my ears nearly as well as I thought and were very uncomfortable. Sound cancellation was pretty good. I think these headphones would only be good for planes and car rides with lack of movement. Also way to expensive for what they produce. Build quality was great, I didn't feel the worry for them breaking any time soon. Only had them for a few days until i returned them though.

3.5 stars to sound quality (because of price)
    4 stars to looks
    2 stars for comfort
    4.5 stars for build quality

    Great sound but twice returned

    • Written by from Lagrangeville

I love the sound and fit of the C5. Very comfortable and the sound quality is awesome. The problems for me are that the right side stopped working after 2 months. They were covered under warranty so I sent them back and got them fixed. Now the left side intermittently stops working and the volume up button on the inline control turns the volume down. What I am also unhappy about is that because I currently live outside of the US and bought them in the US, I get charged a $25 fee to return them even though they do not have to leave the country where I live to get fixed/replaced. So now I have had to spend an extra $50 because of their manufacturing problems. I take very good care of these because I loved the sound so much and I shouldn't have to spend the extra money because of their problems. It's unfortunate because the sound is so good when they work properly but I would not recommend these because if these issues.

Though I liked them a lot...

    • Written by from Villa de Alvarez

I love how they look and I loved how they sounded, however I had the issue of after about 6 moths there was no sound coming from the left side.
I always took care of them and I treated them very carefully, and all of the sudden for no apparent reason ... no sound from one moment to the next.
I expected better quality for the price.

Almost great but wonky with iPhone 5

    • Written by from Brooklyn

The sound is amazing but not right out of the box. I bought a pair of Comply replacement tips and voila, like a whole different sound with added bass. The problem with the B&W tips is they don't form a seal in your ear so you don't get the rich bass. The Comply tips fixes this and keeps it in your ear. Despite the goofy loop, the right earbud would never stay in place.

Now the reason I bumped it from 4 stars to 3. Doesn't seem to be compatible with the iPhone 5. When I'm plugged in and have them in my pants, the sound occasionally cuts in and out and produces static. Super bummed about this since I really like these earphones. I tested on another iPhone 5 and an iPod touch. The other iPhone produces the same static while the iPod does not.

That said, if you're an iPhone 5 owner, beware. I also know it's not part of Apple's "Compatible Products" list. I had these before the iPhone 5 came out and didn't expect earphone compatibility issues. Gotta find some decent replacements.

Sound is good, build quality not so much

    • Written by from Ottawa

I bought this at Apple store about a year ago. My most frequent issue with headphones has been failing jacks which in this case didn't happen so that was good. Sound quality is appropriate for the price and I like the fitting mechanism.

Recently though the mid-section where cables join seems to have issues. When I walk or move the cable, if the joint also moves, sound in one ear stops. It's been getting worse. There's no sign of external damage and I kept these very well protected. Honestly, expected better build quality given the price.

    Sounds great but uncomfortable

Probably got the cleanest bass sound but the design factor of the tips make it the most uncomfortable in-ear headphones to use.

    Not for people who sweat.

    • Written by from Wilmington

As a runner, I tend to sweat A LOT. I bought these in Aug'11 because I wanted something with a great sound, but would stay in place when running (most earbuds wont stay put). These are excellent...... for the first few weeks. Then the control on the wire stopped working from sweat. I try to dry them off after every use, and keep them clean. Thennnnn the right earbud stopped working. I contacted B&W and they replaced them for no charge........ Two months later, same issue. Right earbud isnt working and control works intermittently.

All in all, if you want a nice earbud with great sound, BUY THESE.... just dont work out in them if you intend on sweating.

...... back to the hunt on the perfect earbud yet AGAIN!

    Excellent sound, poor design choices

    • Written by from Stavanger

    The pros:

The C5 offer excellent sound, especially mid- to low range. Deep bass is reproduced with convincing control and authority, so much so that I frequently find myself pulling out one of the plugs to check if I accidentally left the subwoofers on. Vocals are also treated with usual B&W signature excellence. That being said, expect the usual B&W coloration; i.e. not neutral sound, but warm and a bit woolly and with a slight lack of treble clarity and detail.

Aesthetically, the C5 are things of beauty. From the jet black cylindrical design to the silver "grille" at the back, they look very nice indeed. Some users are complaining that the buds are too heavy, but for me this hasn’t been a problem during workouts.

    The cons:

There are a few points that potential buyers need to know about. The cable is very stiff and easy to break. I work at a Hi Fi dealership, and we’ve had unusually many C5s returned due to cable breakage. I’m on my second pair now after only two months, and despite being very careful I’m likely to move on to my third before summer.

The carrying case is a joke. Although very stylish, it’s far too small, especially considering the stiff cable. B&W have attempted to rectify this by removing the integrated plug holder in later versions, but this hasn’t helped much considering the case is still the same overall size.

The remote is also a bit of a blunder. It’s cylindrical and only works if pushed in a very specific way. It’s difficult to use without looking, and impossible if you ever wear gloves. There is also a lot of noise when using the hands free function.

Conclusion: Great sound, but troubled by some very poor design choices.

    Needs getting used to

    • Written by from SCARBOROUGH

I got these as a gift and I'm not very pleased with the product. Of course there are pros and cons which I will list, but if I had the option, I would seek another product in the same price range.

-Great build quality. You can tell that it is made with the best quality materials. Very durable, and the cord is not prone to tangling. The main wires are insulated by a transparent hollow tube which adds to the design and feel.
-Decent audio quality. Everyone here who say the quality of the audio is bad probably don't have them fit right as I've experienced disappointing quality at first, but later figured out the optimal conformation to my ears.

-The loop "one size fits all" concept is not a polished concept. It surely sounds cool and intuitive, but to this day I have either not worn them properly, or maybe my ears are just not normal.
-They are quite heavy and if you're thinking of using these while jogging, forget about it.
-If you don't have the patience to getting used to them, they will hurt your ears at first after prolonged use.

Overall, great look and quality, but just not worth the price tag...

    Bose Earbuds vs. B&W Earbuds

    • Written by from Eagan

After someone had stole my Bose Earbuds i decided that i loved to listen to music allot and that it was a good excuse to get an even better pair. I was wrong! I got home and tried the headphones out and rite away a realized a lack of base. The headphones fit wonderfully and hits the high note perfectly, but when it comes to the lows and base the earbuds don't perform. I even left the headphones on for around 40 hours, on a low volume, to try and somewhat break them in but still no luck. I am going to return them today and once again go back to the good old Bose!

    Great design terrible sound

    • Written by from Brea

I choose this headset because of the reviews and wanted something different than my husband (Bose). So we were both excited when we received it, loved the fit in the ear and the cool design. Then we listened to the two side by side and BY FAR the Bose had the better sound quality. Sent it back the next day and ordered the Bose MIE2i

Ok but not Great. Bose MIE2I better bet.

    • Written by from Annapolis

I had these earphone's for about a week as I waited for my warranty replacement's of my Bose mie2i's (upgraded from regular ie2's because of Siri)...

These get good reviews, for good reason. I guess like with all in-ear's, it comes down to if it fits comfortably. They could be the best sounding headphone's to ever bless your ear drums, but if they are uncomfortable or fall out constantly it doesn't really matter.

Probably to no fault of B&W's, they don't match the comfort ability of the Bose tips... I've had 6 in-ear surgeries on my left ear so I don't expect to fall into the Small, Med, Large sizing categories of mass produce goods...

But I do with Bose. The sound in the C5 is only a little better than in the Bose's and most of that is probably due to the noise isolation, whereas the Bose aren't. Which is actually a plus.. Walking around a city unable to hear the world around you isn't the best idea.

Also, the mic and controls is on the left ear-bud... That was weird and since I'm partially deaf in my left ear, that makes it's useless for me for phone calls.

The only reason I decided to try something else was because the Bose break on me annually. But, the warranty picks up the tab so, until Bose fixes the quality, I'll just be sending them back to get a new pair annually. No better in-ear headphones for the money.

    Not Worth $180

    • Written by from Kentwood

I bought these mostly due to the hype about BW. While the highs are ok, there is little to no bass and the lows are insufficient. Whether it's bass from a rap song or drums from a rock song, the headphones provide a very hollow sound. My beats outperform these headphones 3x over, and I was trying to get away from the whole Monster bandwagon...
