Set up couldn't have been easier and I was playing Dave Brubeck's Take Five within 10 minutes. Bass is clean and sounds are detailed......pure delight!

    Great speakers. AirPlay a dud.

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

Solid, great sounding speakers, but AirPlay was a key selling point.

I bought my partner the ZA for Christmas from the Online Store. After spending three hours on Christmas Day trying to get it to AirPlay properly I have come to the conclusion that the WiFi or AirPlay module is faulty. I had to update the firmware to 1.1.3 twice. After the first firmware update, the unit went into some kind of torpor and wouldn’t even respond to a hard reset.

I found that a LOT of customers have the same problem, but most end up returning it at this point. It was by PURE CHANCE that I ran across a forum post that pointed me to where to download the software to restore the firmware to 1.0.0.

Incidentally, B&W don’t include a USB cable, so unless you have one handy, you can’t update the firmware.

But EVEN AFTER finally successfully updating to 1.1.3, the ZA now connects to my wifi network fine, but will only AirPlay for half a minute. I set my WiFi router to issue a dedicated IP to the ZA’s MAC address and used an IP scanner to watch. When the ZA stops streaming, it disappears from all my iDevices’ AirPlay lists, and also the IP scans fail to detect it. So I’m quite sure that the WiFi/AirPlay module is kaput.

Apple was very accommodating when I called to arrange for a replacement, but ultimately, I wasted a lot of my time trying to get it to work and have to waste more time and effort lugging it to FedEx and waiting another 7-10 days for a replacement unit that was supposed to be a CHRISTMAS GIFT for someone special.

This product isn’t cheap. Is it wrong to expect better QC than this?

    Great build

    • Written by from Port Coquitlam

I just bought this from apple store Dec 5 2011. The cabinet and look is perfect for a small room. I use it for airplay through my iphone + use it as tv speakers for a small room via Optical mini cable. I wanted to use it for Airplay of my PC iTunes but there are problems with airplay through firewall that I cannot seem to figure out - This is a big drawback because i don't put all my music onto my iphone and want access to those songs.
The sound is decent and room filling for a small bedroom or small office. Don't expect pinpoint soundstage because stereo separation is limited. Clarity of treble is good.
I like the options for connections - optical, airplay, ipod dock. There was ethernet but I wasn't able to get that to work as "airplay".
The biggest CON is the setup. Although listed by some as easy, there are too many issues. I found support was good but only if you can speak to someone...they try to get everyone to use their website and email support - not happy with that after I spent 1 long night fiddling with airplay. The problem turned out to be IE 9 has a bug when submitting to the device during setup. Wish they listed that problem on their site. It was easily solved by using Chrome browser instead.

    A Nightmare

    • Written by from Conyers

Not a novice with setting up audio and computers. Have A+ certification on Operating systems and Hardware.......I say this because....During setup, had numerous errors and problems....sometimes worked, other-times didn't...Called B&W....they gave me completely different instructions to setup different than instructions with unit..Finally unit stopped working and B&W told me to return because it seemed a defective unit......LOTS of other websites where people are having same issues....I spent 6-7 hours a day for 3 days before giving up.
I must say B&W speakers are some(if not) of the best you can buy anywhere...totally top of the line....but the Zepp air is a product that shouldnt be at market....buyer beware

    Top notch all the way.

    • Written by from Bethlehem

I plugged in the Ethernet, my router assigned an IP, and I did zero config. Works great.

AirPlay is working flawlessly. I streamed audio from Real Race HD, sounded like I was at Indy.

Listened to The Beatles, Led Zepplin, MIchael Jackson, Sting and the Police... Simply amazing reproduction.

I ran optical audio out from my TV to the 3.5mm optical aux in on the ZA, watching the Flyers and can hear every hit, crashing into the boards, AND the puck when it hits the pipes. Beautiful sound.

Wireless and firmware issues with Zeppelin Air

    • Written by from VALLEY COTTAGE

From the get-go, unable to connect wirelessly to my router using any of the three methods provided in the online manual (but not the one it came packaged with), or to install the firmware update (getting "no device present" in Windows 7 32-bit). The progress before failure using each connection method varies by attempt. Googled it to find that these are problems experienced by other users too, given which you'd expect the website and the instruction manual to have something a tad more enlightening to say than "check your password" or "reconnect power and try again". E-mailed B&W's support, who mailed back promising a 3-day response. Not promising.

    Great Speaker!

    • Written by from Cedar Grove

I bought this not knowing if I would like it. But once I installed it, it was the best thing ever. I can play my songs using my iphone, ipad and ipod over wifi and control the volume on it too! The sound is great! I would surely recommend this!

    fantastic sound quality

    • Written by from Lawrenceville

I bought this product because i love to play music and do other things with my Iphone at the same time. I was very excited to hear about AirPlay and try it. I read the reviews and all the people that said they had many problems seting it up. My advise for these items is to READ THE Manuals before you touch anything. The set up took almost no time at all. The quality of the sound from the system is fantastic. Its as good as the Bose system I use in the same room. I also love the stylish look of the system. The only down side that i have found is that the remote controll does not work very well with the Ipod on my phone when the phone is not docked to the system the volume does not increase smoothly and sometimes goes down instead of up. This only happens with Ipod and not other music applications like Pandora. I would highly recomend this system to amyone that loves great sound, the airplay ability ( that's the main reason why i got this speaker) and stylish looks.

B&W needs to update the firmware!

    • Written by from New York

The sound is astonishingly good. This is a relatively small product that feels like a huge sound system. The design is gorgeous, sleek but solid (the black back looks so much better than the previous chrome one.) However, the wireless setup was working fine until I updated the firmware. After that it became extremely frustrating to open the setup webpage, many times it would just not open for more than 30 minutes. And even after setting it up all correctly with my home network, the Zeppelin often doesn't show up on my iTunes. I really hope they can fix this issues with a firmware update because this product has the potential to be my ideal sound system.

Nice alterative to a sound bar

    • Written by from Dallas

I've enjoyed high quality audio for a while in both multii-channel and stereo formats. I like the everything about a multi-channel setup except for the fact that it begins to take over the room it is setup in. I became tired of the cables, stands, subwoofer, can't put this furniture here, etc...etc..
I decided to move to a simple, one piece solution, and the Zeppelin Air fit the bill. After looking into some different sound bar options I decided that I didn't care for something that pretends to produce multi-channel audio. I just wanted something that sounded nice and clear, but still could produce clean bass without a separate subwoofer. Well the Zeppelin Air also does that, and it looks fantastic as well. The Zeppelin has just the right inputs for my needs, I use the USB for my computer and the optical input for my Xbox 360. I'm happy and now my living room is much more comfortable to be in.

    Simply excellent!

    • Written by from Burien

I have had it for a couple of days. Initially when I set it up, I was quite disappointed with the quality of the sound. I started playing with positioning of the speaker; I tried elevating it, turning it, putting it a little distance from a wall, then back...and yes I found the sweet spot. As with any speaker, positioning of one makes a big difference.

I have been waiting for the "air" to come out for a couple of reasons; one - new set of speakers, each supported by an individual amp (which makes a huge difference when you crank it up, creating almost no distortion), two - capability of listening to my music from an iPhone without docking - which is very handy when you change stations that run off of apps, otherwise you would have to get up to do so.

Overall, this is an excellent speaker set. I am considering getting another one for a my bedroom after I test it for a few weeks.

    Great Product

One of the best speakers I have ever had. In addition to all of its positive feedbacks, I wanted to add that it has some minor issues such as WI-FI. It is pretty hard to set your device up in order to use it wirelessly.

Speaker quality awesome but airplay setup a headache

    • Written by from Tel Aviv Yaffo

It took me more than two hours to finally succeed to turn the device light into purple so that I could setup the airplay feature. The sound is truly extraordinary but I just hope not to have to reset the wireless connection all over again...

    Wireless is difficult

    • Written by from Oakland

The sound is fine when it works. The wireless feature part no longer works because it needs the famous firmware upgrade. I have been hearing about firmware upgrades since the dawn of the computer age. It usually means the gadget doesn't work right. It was fine when I first set it up but after moving and trying to connect to a new network, it is impossible. Overpriced.

Amazing sound and a huge hassle

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

I want to love this thing so much. It sounds and looks amazing. But I've wasted hours on setup. Airplay didn't work at all out of the box. I've flashed and re-flashed the firmware and had to configure the wifi multiple times. B & W tries to make it easy, but it's not. I don't understand why the iOS app has to run over wifi instead of using the dock connector for configuration. Anyway, if you're ok with the wasted time, go for it.

    Simply Awesome!!!

    • Written by from marysville

This is by far the best iPod speaker on the market. We picked up ours at a local Magnolia HiFi store and ended up using it as a sound bar for the tv as well as a wireless speaker system from our iMac. It's pricey but nothing else like it even comes close to the amazing sound this thing produces.

    Use iOS route!

    • Written by from WARRINGTON

Had it delivered yesterday. By the end of the day yesterday wanted to throw it out of the window. Followed set up advice to the letter and got nowhere. Had to do complete restore this morning and tried again. No luck. Factory restor again - the finally decided to use iPhone iOS route to set up. Worked first time and now listening to the satisfying deep, crisp boom of my tunes. Worth the trouble I think.
    Go for it!

    Wireless disconnecting!

    • Written by from Derby

Terrible connection issues! The unit sounds great but if you prefer to connect via the home network then forget it, this thing is rubbish!. I cant find a fix anywhere for it so it's going back. This thing costs £500.00 here in the UK. I think I'll go for the Bose instead. Hugely disappointed with the wireless facility :-(

    Updated Review

    • Written by from Olds mar

I cannot do an "update " or further review from same account but I wrote the " Useless and Being Returned " review below on Dec 23. I feel obliged to update review, as I have now been able to get the Zeppelin working. The set up as per the instructions did not work ( nor the alternatives from the B & W website ) and I had given up when I wrote the review , but finally I was able, almost by accident, to get a " work around " using "the Network and Sharing Center" function in Windows 7 without the Zeppelin set up page ( via provided IP address) ever appearing. No matter how many times I tried, the IP address was not recognised by any PC or Mac I used. Also, it will still not work with my iPod classic ( 4th generation) docked, as the iPod will not recognise the Zeppelin. They need to do something about this because as advertised it is meant to work with an iPod classic . However, with an iPod Touch 4thGen, connecting through AirPlay and also streaming direct, from iTunes on my PC , again via AirPlay, it is a great device. The wireless operation is fantastic, assuming you can get it working. As for sound quality, I also own a Bose SoundDock in the UK and the Zeppelin is at least as good as the Bose ( although I have not tried the new SoundDock 10 wireless via Bluetooth for true comparison of Bluetooth wireless v AirPlay wireless). I would say the sound quality is therefore good but I would not go beyond that because it is expensive for what it is, sound wise, and as others have said there is some distortion at high volume I see that some have disliked the shape and look. I actually like it and it looks particularly good in any room, with furniture tailored to a modern, minimalist look.

    Completely Frustrated and Dissapointed

    • Written by from Surrey

This unit did not work out of the box after setting up the air play on a wirelessG router with 128bit encryption. Furthermore hooking up an iphone4s to unit plays for a couple of minutes and then turns off. The red light flashes, unit has to be unplugged and powered up again.

This is no better than an expensive and ugly recharger. The sound, when it can be heard is awesome for mp3 player. All details are clear and balanced bass is deep. I put in a support request to B&W and hope to get some help because the web site support does not say enough. Furthermore the video is so lame. I'm from a computer engineering background and should be able to get through all the manuals to setup unit easily but this unit just doesn't work well. It is a dissapointment.
