This product does exactly what it states and does it very well. I am very happy with the product as it functions exactly as expected. However, i should have paid more attention to the other reviews. It was a little disappointing to discover that this 30 dollar product is a fairly cheap piece of plastic.

While I would've liked better build quality (the plastic spacer between the trackpad and keyboard falls out if you don't set it up just right), this is how the keyboard and trackpad should've been designed to begin with. You'll need to set tap-to-click if you want to use it on your lap.

    Cheap plastic, a little disapointed

Maybe I didn't read the description well enough, but I really wasn't expecting this to be plastic. Its painted like aluminum, but its still adds a cheap feel to my all aluminum peripherals. Twelve South usually makes some really cool stuff... but they always seem to cheap out on the details... for the high cost, this was definitely a huge disappointment.

from the photos, description & price I believed that this product was made from aluminum and was of the same quality as any apple product. I was shocked to find that the product was nothing more than a cheap piece of plastic. this product serves its purpose well but it is quite simply way, way, WAY overpriced. I am very dissatisfied with this purchase.
I should have read the reviews before purchasing. apparently I'm not the only one with the same complaint.

    1. Grossly overpriced for a hunk of plastic.

    2. More importantly, causes trackpad to behave oddly. The left click didn't "feel" the same as it did before (or the same as a right click), because the track pad is held in a slightly fixed position (I think it hovers a tenth of a millimetre over the desk surface). Doesn't sound like enough to make a diff, but it does; the feel is off and it makes you stumble.

    3. Trackpad does not work so well when it's THAT close to the keyboard; every time you use the cursor keys, unless you are VERY carefull, a stray finger brushes ever slightly against the trackpad, and--disaster reigns.

Will be returning mine after two disappointing days.

I love this! Instead of having to move around 3 things, it's only 2. Keyboard with trackpad and my mouse. Definitely should be added to the desktop setup.

    Magic Wand - Almost

Great idea and almost great execution. I agree with some of the reviewers - the metal dock should be a higher quality given the price but I bought it for one reason - to hold the Keyboard and Track Pad together - until Apple offers an integrated wireless keyboard and trackpad - like on my AirBook. The problem - the H-Bar does NOT fit easily and it is very difficult to remove which is necessary when you replace the batteries. I watched the video on Twelve South's website which shows the H-Bar smoothly sliding into place and being removed smoothly - NO WAY. I asked Twelve South to send me a replacement H-Bar on the premise that mine is defective. We'll see what happens. If I get satisfaction, I will update this review.

    Almost apple grade great product!

I was quite discouraged by some of the negative comments initially. But after a few day having my two hands busy all the time dealing both the keyboard and touchpad, I decided to try it out.

Yes, it is plastic and a bit over priced. But it works. Installation is nice and easy, takes me 45 seconds to put them together, sizing is perfect, aligned with both ends perfectly. if I have to complain, the soft T-pad should be coloured in silver (same as the H beam) so it could be blended in, right now it is light grey and quite visible.

    Anyway, I am very pleased.

    Sad waste of $30

I love the idea of this product. I was happy to spend the money to get it. I was quickly made unhappy when I realized how poorly thought out this really is. The "H-Bar" is so incorrectly sized that I am unable to get it to fit between the trackpad and the keyboard. While trying to push it into position, it left a noticeable rub mark on the keyboard and ended up slightly cracking the surface of the trackpad. (That's how much stress it put on the trackpad.) I have given up on using the stabilizer piece because it simply does not fit around the edge of either device which completely negates the lap-use angle of buying this product. Very disappointed. Save your money, please.

This product is great! I really can't imagine not having it...it's sturdy and does what is supposed to do!

It might sound a little pricey for a piece of plastic but it's really worth it!

watch out! Edge of the product is very sharp. while sliding it to put together the edge of magic wand has cut off rubber foot a little. keyboard and trackpad is well aligned on desk, but not at all when it is lifted in air. It is shiped with h-beam to hold lower part together but it hinders pressing arrow keys.

While the product functions, it's ridiculously priced for a track of plastic. For the cost I was expecting a piece of aluminium. Disappointed.

Received this product from Amazon today and after spending half an hour to figure out how to install it correctly, I'm loving it!

I got this to use with my keyboard and trackpad when I use my MacBookPro with the HDTV, and it works like a charm! Couch potatodom, here I come!!

The only thing is that the instructions to set up and get the little thingamajigs in place are not very good. No illustrations. Just one line.
Luckily I found this YouTube video that reviews it and shows the correct way to do it... And now I'm a happy camper!

    Works perfectly

Some reviews describe problems with this product, either inserting keyboard and trackpad into it, or that it's unstable once assembled. This was not my experience.

The product arrived, I unpacked it, clipped my keyboard into the left side, my trackpad into the right side, inserted the strip to join keyboard and trackpad, and then the plastic filler to complete the process. Total time - less than two minutes. Result - an elegant and seamless union of keyboard and trackpad that makes the two look, and work, as if they are a single product.

I use my keyboard on a desk. It's totally stable there. But if I pick it up and wave it around the connection between keyboard and trackpad is still perfectly stable so I believe it could be used on one's knee too.

My only complaint is that the price is ridiculous because the product is really only three pieces of plastic.

Bottom line: Works great; too expensive.

This is exactly what I needed for the keyboard/trackpad. I am not sure why others complain about the inability to use the pad click. This feature works just fine and there has been no compromise on either item with all of the Magic Wand connections in place. It works great. Well worth the purchase if you want the two stuck together.

    Overpriced and under engineered

Great idea but with lots of flaws.
The product only connects the battery compartments of the two Apple devices and will therefore appear floppy unless it is used on a desk or similar.

To compensate for the floppy appearance 12South has cut this little H-bar in plastic that better connected the two units. They just forgot the fact that you can no longer click the MagicPad. The H-bar requires a lot of force to install and will have to be removed every time you need to change batteries in the keyboard. BUMMER !!!

But if you are looking for something to hold you Pad and Keyboard together you found a $30 plastic track to do so. Far too expensive if you ask me.

Very clean look and the Apple components fit perfectly. I like everything Twelve South makes so perhaps I'm biased, but this product does exactly what it's intended to do and look slick!

LOVING Mine... Confused by the reviews

I think the ease & simplicity of the wand is what is causing all the user related errors I'm reading about in these reviews. I've had mine for a while now and have experienced NONE of the above mentioned issues. As anyone who is reading these can tell about 50% are not able to use the item correctly and the other 50% love it. The product is great, a little over priced, but us Apple users are well accustomed to that. If you are considering this purchase DEFINITELY buy it and if you can't seem it have it function as expected then return it, but it seems pretty obvious to me all of the complaints above are nothing more then user error. Great device!!!

    Great idea, horrible execution

    • Written by from Somerset

16 of 18 people found this useful

Great idea, but executed horribly. When you get the keyboard and trackpad installed they wobble, so this product comes with a little "I" shaped bar to put between them. The problem is the bar is so loose it likes to fall out (not to mention how the little rubber stop-gap piece above it is only held in with friction and also likes to fall out). So this bar needs to be taped in place...the only problem with this (besides the tape taking off the cheap fake-metallic coating off the "I" shaped bar) is in order to turn on the keyboard sometimes (or to get your computer to come out of sleep mode), you then have to remove the tape to separate the two pieces to get to the power button on the keyboard. Annoying isn't the right word...

In one phrase: Apple should be ashamed to let this item come to it's store. It's design is nowhere near the quality you expect from any Apple sanctioned item (especially for $30 for a piece of tube-shaped plastic).

    Perfect for an HTPC

I use it all the time on the couch, it truly makes the keyboard and magic trackpad into one like they should be. Very rigid, feels like they were manufactured as one piece. No complaints at all.

For those complaining about the fact that the power button on one peripheral is hidden, a couple points:

    1. Twelve South, the makers of this product can't change the placement of the power button on Apple peripherals so don't bother rating them down for it.
    2. My keyboard power button is hidden and I've only had to hit it once in 3+ months I've been using this setup, when I left my mac off for a couple weeks. Usually the keyboard goes to sleep and wakes with a single key press.
    3. You DON'T have to take the assembly apart to hit the hidden power button. The gap between the keyboard and magic track pad is large enough to stick a dime or key into to hit the power button. The only thing covering that gap is a little rubber insert that's easily removable.
