    Love/hate relationship after one year

    • Written by from Burnaby

Out of the box, this product is amazing. Small profile, great aesthetic, amazing sound considering its size and price-point. I was never able to get the advertised battery life, but a full charge would last a few hours at near max volume, so I was happy.

However, six months in, I started noticing charging issues and a drop in battery life.

Now, about a year in, the unit rarely charges properly, and when it does, the battery lasts about an hour. Furthermore, even when plugged into the wall or to the computer while in use, the battery still runs down, even at a low volume with LiveAudio (a Jambox software feature to enhance sound) turned off. Perhaps I have a defective unit, but I encourage you to read through the Jambox forums regarding charging (and other) issues before deciding to purchase this product. This seems like a wide-spread product issue.

I've given a two-star rating because when it works, it's really great. However, when it doesn't, it's a frustratingly expensive paperweight. I will not purchase another Jambox. I would rather spend a little more and get a quality speaker.

Will NOT buy another one at this price

This is my SECOND Jambox and only because the first one I bought essentially didn't work or if it did, only sporadically. The worst part was the hassle I had to go through to get it replaced. Yes, Jambox did finally send me a new one but said that I would have no guarantee on it, because I refused to pay for the postage to California (from BC) - - heck, why should I when I'd spent $200 on a 'Jambox guaranteed' device that didn't work?

The 2nd one, while better, still has issues: pop and hiss like our old LPs for crying out loud! Blue tooth failure? I don't know why this happens everyday several times a day in mid-stream. Then, the delay to get it to connect with its annoying blooping noise. The amount of TIME I spend on trying to reconnect is a total pain!

On the positive side, when it's working properly, in a small space, it can sound good (not loads of volume but certainly adequate for the size). Packing up is easy: you can throw it in a backpack or purse and off you go.

In the end I would not buy another Jambox: too expensive for the hassle.

Jawbone needs to get it together

Portable, stylish, and great sound, but what good is that if the connectivity software is HORRIBLE!!! I've read the reviews and I'm not the only one who thinks this. There is nothing seamless about this bluetooth speaker. If I use my iPhone or iPad to play music it then requires re-pairing to my computer, even though it says it's paired. I spend so much time getting my devices to pair with this thing that I occasionally have to restrain myself from wanting to send it back to the manufacturer in pieces. I really hope they get together with Apple and fix this. Until they do I don't recommend this product.

Great design, big price, horrible sound

I was delighed when I got the jambox out of the box and set it up: it's a beautiful design. I was also happy with the ease of set-up; anyone could do it. But then I turned on the music. I couldn't believe how horrible the sound was. It was so bad I thought I had it set up wrong and tried again. Same story. The sound is far worse than you would expect for a $20 speaker from Radio Shack. For $200 I expected a lot more.

Luckily I bought it at my local Apple store, so I returned it easily, quickly, and with no questions asked.

    Mediocre volume, poor bluetooth reception.

For the price, it's certainly disappointing. My iPhone 4 bluetooth connection is stable, but the volume won't fill even a small room. From a Macbook Pro (Late 2008), the static, tiny gaps in sound, and pops make it of unacceptable quality. See their own forums and you'll see lots of complaints. I returned mine.

Great sounds but won't hold a charge

I received my Jambox a few weeks ago and for a couple of days it worked really well. I loved the sound quality (big bass for something so small) but then it wouldn't hold a charge. I'd plug it in for about 3 hours until it had a full charge and then start using it. After 1 hour and 17 mins, it was dead. Charged again and played again - same result, same time. After a few more tries I was still getting 1 hour and 17 mins so I returned it to the Apple Store. My replacement has just arrived and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this one works.

    Pros
    --------
Battery life lasts for hours, of course it depends on the volume setting and type of sound being played.
    Compact.
Reliable Bluetooth, rare among Bluetooth devices. It connects and stays connects while battery is strong enough.
    Simple battery indicator.
Sound is descent. Not as tiny as I had expected. Not overly bassy.

    Cons
    -------
I use it to watch movies on my iPhone/iPad.
Unfortunately, much of the movies digitized on on the Internet, especially Netflix has not been done correctly. Meaning, some movies are fine, but most have audio problems. The sound is barely audible on a lot of movies, especially before digital audio recordings was popular.
Jambox lacks a hardware algorithm called sound normalization, which could solve this problem. It's cheap, uses little power and highhly effective. Small speakers could all use this.

Sound accuracy could be better. Especially in the higher frequency and voice range, which should be within the realm of possibility for speakers this size.

Rape/hiphop is not the cup of tea for many listeners so for me at least base is not important.

Speakerphone mic could be a whole lot better and have noise cancelation function for a device of this size especially.

Hisss from the speakers. Reminds me of the old analog days. Not a goood thing.

The sharp 90 degree corners will definately show wear and tear very quickly as well as be weak poonts if ever dropped.

    Recommended uses.
    Listening to music in cars.
Use on the bedside, when home theater systems are not welcomed by neighbors.

Audio fair except bass range. Terrible hardware experience.

I was recently given a Jambox by a family member, who had also bought one for herself. Within two days of minimal use (sound quality is good except on lower-register) the mini-usb port in the unit was somehow jammed inward.

There was no irresponsible handling of the device or charger, and when I called customer service and finally got them to understand the scenario, she seemed unsurprised and offered immediate replacement by mail (backordered) or at any corp. AT&T that would happen to have it in stock. Return was easy since I had the original receipt, and didn't even have the accessories, but the problem with my new one is that now the stereo wire has already broken near the input jack. Now have to replace that. Typical Apple problem (e.g. headphones).

Purchased to use with my Macbook Pro and iPhone 4S ... worked great with the iPhone but had constant problems with bluetooth connectivity with Macbook Pro... would drop signal every few minutes. Reset device and same problem. The price is high so it should be an amazing product, but the sound is good ... not quite amazing as i was hoping. After all this I can't say I would recommend it... I returned it to the store.

    Sound quality doesn't deliver

I picked up the jambox yesterday, straight out of the box it was dead. Plugging into usb or the wall outlet I was greeted to a super loud, long beep. Thought that was odd - couldn't find any information about it. After trying some different usb outlets, the beep stopped and began to charge. I let it charge for about an hour, then updated to the 2.1 firmware an I was ready to try it out.

LiveAudio sounded a little better than the standard mode, but it too quiet to really enjoy (using iTunes equalizer I could bump it up a bit, but thats only in iTunes). I mostly listen to electronic music, tracks with moderate bass. I found it clipped very easy, and sound quality was poor. This was over bluetooth on my iMac (yes, setup as bluetooth headphones), so I tried my iPhone - same results. Plugged directly in via the audio cable, again same thing. Having read tons of reviews praising the quality of it, I thought I might of had a dud.

Returned my first one, tried a 2nd unit. It was worse than my first. Now tracks that previously had mild distortion were clipping in a really unpleasant manner. Leading me to believe its just a poor quality product overall. Other nitpicky things: no way to mute UI sounds, UI sounds don't adjust to the volume level (as in when its low volume the up and down sounds should match accordingly).

I really wanted to enjoy it - It looks great, the way it pairs and its customizable features are nice, but in the end it's sound that matters, and this doesn't deliver. I have a feeling most people aren't as obsessed about sound quality as me. At $200 this isn't acceptable. $50-80 would be a better price point for the sound output of this device.

Hopefully Jambox 2, if a new one is created, solves these issues.

great sound and the distance is good. The battery life works for 6-8hrs, and since I work outside allday, I just put it on the ground on the worksite and leave it alone.

The down side is it gets an annoying buzz at times, drops connections and fails to link up. Like traffic, my worry for the day is what kind of mood my speaker will be in. so far, it is 50/50. Worth the price if it worked all of the time. but the cost and anxiety of it's performance left me jilted.

this product is overrated, it is not worth 213.00 its small yes, but its not very loud like the adds suggest. if i were at a party, and this was the speaker providing the music like the video showed, than it would b worth it. but its not i tested it out and its not all that great, plus its way over priced. next time make a product that is worth the money..i might as well buy a new iphone 4 for that cash. if this were louder than advertised, than its worth it, but in my opion no.

Yes, it is small. Perhaps too small, it can't handle descent surround or even stereo sound effects. And there is subtle whining sound that discomforts my ears. I am returning it.

Bought this yesterday because my girlfriend bought one and it sounded amazing. After opening the box and using it for an hour, it asked me to plug it in to charge. No problem. After charging for 4 hours, almost twice as long as what is needed for a full charge, I paired it with my iPhone. 5 minutes later it asked me to charge it again. My girlfriend and I swapped AC adapters and cables. Charged it over night and it still wont last for over 5 minutes. I am sure I am a unique case, as this seems to be an error only specific to me, however, for $200 for a speaker I expect it to work.
