    Awesome device!

    • Written by from Belle Chasse

I am in the military and I use this all the time. Anywhere I am needed. If you are unable to work this and payed extra money for "drivers," you were fooled. Visit www.militarycac.com and you will find everything you need. If you are still unable to get it to work, it's user error and not Apple or the device.

My only complaint is that the top swivel piece popped out of place on my third day of having the device. However, it does not affect the functionality of the device.

    cac reader

    • Written by from Brea

I was a little bit excited to order and get my cac reader for my new MAC Pro. After reading the reviews, I was feeling pretty good, to be able to use my cac reader right out of the box, like some of the reviewers had stated. I even went to the apple store to try and get some insight. I plugged it in, and I get an error message. The apple store reps said I would need to load a windows software for it to work. Nobody knew anything about a cac reader. At this point I'm aa bit frustrated and disappointed. Is there anyone out there you can shed some light on this subject. thank you RGR

I gave it three stars. I know it will work awesome, once I get things corrected.

    Doesn't work for 10.9.1

    • Written by from chesapeake

This does not work for the new maverick. I have tried everything the past few weeks to get this to work and i have had no luck. You'd figure they would put on here what OS system this is compatible with but they didn't.

Disregard negative reviews claiming that the product does not work with Mavericks. This product will not work right out of the box and you will be required to configure your computer a little and download some additional software. All the information that you need can be found on militarycac.com. The product does work with military CAC and I am glad that I purchased this item.

SCR3500 identity card reader from SCM Microsystems

    • Written by from lasne

Since I updated to the to the new OS X (Mavericks) this card reader does not work anymore. This fact has been confirmed by other users I have met recently.
Apple doesn't even propose another card reader in the Apple Store.
When is someone going to solve this problem?

    Thank you

    Works with a little help

    • Written by from San Clemente

This product works great, however for us military personnel there is some additional items that need to be downloaded before it works. I suggest “militaryCAC.com” for additional assistance.

Of note: I had a Keychain issue and with a quick appointment to the Apple Store it was fixed. For those that cannot go to them as needed, simply create a different user on your Mac, and with a new and clean Keychain it will work easy. For some reason my issue was common and this was the quick fix.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by from Waynesville

I bought this card so that I could access my DoD Enterprise email from web.mail.mil on my mac computer (OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion). It did not work out of the package so I re-downloaded the certificates, downloaded Centrify, downloaded the package from MacOSForge, and did a lot of troubleshooting. I have an Oberthur ID card and I cannot get it to work. I am really disappointed that Apple still hasnt come up with a good solution for OS X 10.8 fixes with this CAC reader.

Works, but flimsy and easily breakable

    • Written by from Fort Lee

The reader works, unless it breaks and is unable to hold the card tight enough to contact the reader. I've had mine for a few months now and I have since stopped using it since it doesn't work as it should without me taping it up to hold the car in place firmly. Quick run-down

    1. It doesn't have a dongle, so for MacBook users, you can't use your other USB port because the reader is too close to the body. This wasn't a deal breaker until I wanted to use another USB device, then it became annoying when I wanted to charge my phone. You can do it, but it makes the reader bend, which leads to it breaking since it's cheap flimsy plastic, more on that below.

    2. The plastic is entirely too flimsy. It broke entirely too easily, especially for $30. You'd think that it would be decent grade plastic that didn't break after flipping the reader open and shut a few times. For $30, this needs to be durable. I know it doesn't take much $ to make these things, so sacrifice a little profit and make a better product.

    3. It's inconsistent when using Windows 8. I'm a boot camp user, and I need my reader to sign forms, so I use Windows 8 and Lotus Forms.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this reader again until it came with a dongle, more durable plastic and better Windows 8 support. There are better card readers out there for less than $30 they're charging for this.

Worked for a while, but no longer

    • Written by from San Diego

I have had this CAC reader for over a year. It worked great out of the box for 10.6 and 10.7, however, 10.8 destroyed that progress. Downloading the enabler from Centrify fixed the issue with 10.8. However, this past week the device just stopped working. I am not sure why, but now if I plug it into any Mac that mac no longer works for any other card reader until you reboot. Just tried this out on a co-worker's laptop and forced a reboot for him. Once rebooted our systems will work with our other CAC readers as long as I don't plug this one back in.

Also, it is a space hog when expanded. Cute and compact until you want to use it. I had to buy a hub just so I could use it with my laptop. Not worth the cuteness.

Difference in the ID card types

    • Written by from Woodbridge

I bought the CAC reader and couldn't get it to work with the Oberthur brand ID card. I went this morning and got a new CAC, the GEMAL TO TOPDL GX4 and it works fine. So, there's obviously a difference in the type of CAC that you receive. I like it now that it works.

    Does not work

    • Written by from Pembroke Pines

I don't know why Apple would sell something that their latest OS does not support. Even after spending the additional $25 to get the driver suite from an outside company, scbsolutions, it still does not work.

I don't understand what Apple's deal is here. Something like this is obviously very important to the people who use it. I cannot work from my computer.

I use this to access a LOT of military websites for work and personal use. In conjunction with the PKard software offered via sites like cac.com or AKO, this reader is probably the best one I've used. I just switched from PC to MAC, and can't get enough of the user friendly apps and hardware like this reader that MAC users are able to get their hands on. This reader will easily fit into any pocket on a standard notebook case. The only warning that I can come up with is that when not in use and folded, the reader is really small so can be lost easily. Otherwise - great purchase!
