    Sound just like anything else

    • Written by from Columbus

Im a video editor that was looking for some great speakers for monitoring audio, I fell into the hype and cool design of these speakers. I have found that they sound just like speakers that are much cheaper. They do get the job done, im not saying they are a bad speaker, but you can buy some about half the price and get the same performance.

    Good while they lasted

I owned these speakers for about 4 years and was very satisfied with them. The bass bin under the desk, the satellites either side of my iMac. All well and good until one satellite started making an irritating buzzing noise. On close inspection, I found that the glue holding one speaker in the four-speaker stack had given up and the speaker was loose. No way to fix it. The way the speakers are fixed to the column is weak, the glue goes brittle and breaks. While cool to look at, and give a good sound, I now stick to standard designs.

I read tons of reviews on these, walked into the apple store and bought them without a question. when i got home and plugged them in i was a little disappointed. don't get me wrong, they are loud. the sub shakes the floor above me, but the sticks sound muffled to me when it comes to crunchy guitar rifs. they are probably awesome if you listen to mainly hip hop, rap or classical, but if you listen to metal these are weak. i've returned these, spent the extra 10 bucks and went with the m-audio AV40's. guitars just simply sound better and more accurate on them.

Great value, though not perfect. Adding mids really helps!

Nearly all reviews for these speakers say they are phenomenal. I would say that they are good, and undeniably great value for money.

I think a lot of the speakers' success lies in using them EXACTLY as the designers intended - on a desk at which the listener is sitting, with speakers positioned exactly perfectly to get the right sound. I've been trying to use them as speakers in the corner of our living room in a "macbook+long cable+speakers=great hi fi" setting, and they perform a little less well. After a while I've figured why, so here's my tip:

While crisp hi's and big basses are there in bundles with these speakers, the mid-frequency warmth that really helps for a "relaxing" home sound, especially at lower overall volumes, are often far too low.

I tested this and, sure enough, cutting trebles and basses (alternatively boosting mids) really helps these speakers. Cutting the trebles/boosting the mids also seems to significantly alleviate the issue of requiring perfect speaker placement too. (NB: The lack of a system wide EQ for the MacBook get's REALLY annoying here! Seriously, Apple - get it sorted!).

So, my star rating is only 3 because a) my expectations were so high and b) I was initially a bit disappointed in the sound in our living room set up. However, having done a bit of tweaking the sound really is great. So - I hope this helps anyone, if they're at all disappointed in the sound as I was!

    Design issue

Great sound. But they recommend the subwoofer be placed under the desk. That would be fine except the on/off switch is on the BACK of the subwoofer which is under the desk.... They are proud about their design, but forgot the customer on that feature.

Good sound but not loud enough!

    • Written by from Elkhart

I like the look of the speakers and the sound is pretty good but they just don't have the ooomph that my klipsch system had! The sound cuts out when turned up to high and you never know what the volume is set at because its a touch volume system, not a knob. Kind of disappointed! If they had 1/2 stars i would've given it 2 1/2 stars.
