Great value, though not perfect. Adding mids really helps!

Nearly all reviews for these speakers say they are phenomenal. I would say that they are good, and undeniably great value for money.

I think a lot of the speakers' success lies in using them EXACTLY as the designers intended - on a desk at which the listener is sitting, with speakers positioned exactly perfectly to get the right sound. I've been trying to use them as speakers in the corner of our living room in a "macbook+long cable+speakers=great hi fi" setting, and they perform a little less well. After a while I've figured why, so here's my tip:

While crisp hi's and big basses are there in bundles with these speakers, the mid-frequency warmth that really helps for a "relaxing" home sound, especially at lower overall volumes, are often far too low.

I tested this and, sure enough, cutting trebles and basses (alternatively boosting mids) really helps these speakers. Cutting the trebles/boosting the mids also seems to significantly alleviate the issue of requiring perfect speaker placement too. (NB: The lack of a system wide EQ for the MacBook get's REALLY annoying here! Seriously, Apple - get it sorted!).

So, my star rating is only 3 because a) my expectations were so high and b) I was initially a bit disappointed in the sound in our living room set up. However, having done a bit of tweaking the sound really is great. So - I hope this helps anyone, if they're at all disappointed in the sound as I was!

    WORTH IT

Listening to Chris Cornell's rendition of Billie Jean as I write this. No speaker better. Im bought these for college since I need a good set of speakers when editing movies and nothing Ive ever had beats these. I don't know too much about the tech specs but I was recommended these by my high school music teacher and I couldn't ask for more. Bass is amazing, crystal clear sound and no matter how loud I set it to, sounds amazing. Filled the whole hallway of my dorm (played some soundtrack to Gladiator during nerf gun battles). Now a year after I bought them and sound like new. WORTH IT

I just plugged in the speakers and fired up iTunes. The sound filled the room.

They are a perfect match to a Mac; simple, elegant and high quality.

    Very Nice for the Price

I have had these speakers for about two weeks and I am quite happy with the way they sound. They are very capable of producing loud and deep sounds. I would recommend adjusting the iTunes equalizer to suit your personal taste. There are probably better speakers out there, but the prices can get quite ridiculous. I am very happy with my choice.

Just purchased the HK Sound Sticks III
Previously have owned the Bose Companion 5's and top JBL's for my 27" Quad Core iMac.
These are for sure the best out there for the money.... PERIOD.
Very, very good response and clarity, and the ability to adjust the bass mixes brilliant.
Would like to have had the blue LED light, and the option to turn the inner LED light off, but pleased way above what was expected.
    Would recommend highly

Aside from the fact the we have a very modern decor in our home made me buy these speakers but I must say they are out performing the other speakers in the house. We have them set up using the Airplay so we can put them anywhere. If I could rate these higher I would.

    Highly recommended.

PS. These silly things glow in the dark and are a real conversation piece.

Alright, for a while these speakers were great, until about a year later when they recently just lost a lot of sound. For the price, never buying them again.

I received these speakers for Christmas and I have to say I'm very impressed. The sound is awesome and can get as loud as you want.

The only complaint I have is that the power is located on the Subwoofer, which is designed to go under a desk. It can be inconvenient at times, but it is a small price to pay for the sound you get in return.

Unarguably THE best 2.1 sound solution for your Mac

I use H/K Soundsticks II and I would never trade them for anything else! At the beggining, despite all the reviews I have read - I was so sceptically tuned - how in Earth is possible, this set, built entirely of transperent plastic to sound as good as made of wood speakers?! Well, somehow they do! At least for me - they sound fantastic! Of course not better , but at least on par with my audiophile HI-Fi Pioneer stereo system, where sound is amplified thru a true MOSFET amplifiers and is delivered from 3-way speakers+subwoofer! Well, the Hi-Fi cost me 5 times the Soundsticks, you definitely can not place it on your desktop and despite of it good aesthetics can not compare with the "insanely beautiful" look of Soundsticks! So, if you can afford it - do not think about anything else! Go and buy one! And you won't be sorry!

My kids (18, 20 & 24) recommended I purchase these for my mini mac as I just moved into an apartment. The sound is just wonderful and I am comparing that to my Bose sound dock. They not only sound GREAT but look good too and I can direct the sound by moving the sticks. This is the deal of the year!! Thank you Apple & Harman Kardon.

    10 Years Strong

As I continuously procure computer gear that interacts with my Mac systems I'm often left disappointed with the lifespan, let alone I find when I purchase something 24 months later it's outdated or has fallen to 25% of it's value at best.

I was utterly surprised to find 2 years after I purchased the SoundSticks that they were still selling strong for the same price. Unparalleled in the industry for sure. I find it remarkable that 10 years later these are still on the market! I have B&O throughout our entire workspace and in my office, I still rock these speaks out on my desktop.

I challenge anyone to say that they've had computer speakers for 10 years and for them to even be on the market to date, let alone, still selling at 80% of value. WOW!

    buzz?

The sound is excellent. Really can't complain for a pair of computer speakers + subwoofer. However, i noticed a buzz when cranked to high volume while plugged into the computer. Seems like plugging it into the headphone jack instead of the speaker output fixes the problem. Oh and no buzz at all when plugged into iPhone either.
