    Had for over a year

    • Written by from Dawsonville

I purchased to use with the late 2012 model 27" iMac which shipped Feb of 2013. When installed I was using U-Verse. Installation went smooth, up and running within a half hour. Good picture quality, the only flaw was periodic picture resets which briefly interrupted the broadcast before self correcting. Recording into iTunes worked as advertised but quality (as expected) is better if purchased from iTunes. I compared Game of Thrones BIG difference but still good. Recently I switched to Direct TV and the picture reset issue seems to be gone, also picture quality has improved to the point I no longer use my 92" home theatre for movies as the 27" iMac provides a better quality picture. This device is worth the money.

I can say that this unit disappoints more than it excites

    • Written by from Foster City

I have had Elgato EyeTV HD for a year now an I can say that this unit disappoints more than it excites especially at its $200 price point. In short I would not recommend this unit. A few things that bug me about this unit, the driver doesn’t play well as my iMac comes out of sleep/hibernation, and randomly the unit will stop working requiring a reseat of the USB plug on my iMac. The IR blaster works but it dose not constantly function all of the time requiring me to manually change my Comcast HD box so with that problem the prescheduling of recording on more than one channel is not reliable. another thing that is annoying the software dose not have the ability to just type in a change number on virtual keypad instead you need to scroll endlessly from channel 2 to channel 700. I will say the picture is very good and software adapts well between regular TV to HD TV. Its unfortunate that there is not more competition for this type of device like on Windows.

    Perfect addition to my desktop

    • Written by from Spring Hill

Was going to buy an HDTV for my study, but got the EyeTV HD for Christmas and it proved to be the perfect solution. With access to all my Cable TV offerings, I can work on my computer and watch/listen to live sporting events or news, as I chose... right on my iMac's 27" screen. And... setting it up was so easy and seamless. Recording is a bonus.

An excellent device with remarkably sophisticated software

    • Written by from Framingham

I bought this a couple of years ago, using it with an older iMac in my media room and RCN service. Am now on FiOS, still working great. I was initially hesitant to buy, as input is component video rather than HDMI; but the result is very high quality, indistinguishable from 720 HDMI. The software is remarkably sophisticated all around, from set-up to editing to the large array of export formats. The product does what it claims.
Keep in mind that the EyeTV software is continually being upgraded: old reviews disparaging the software refer to early software levels.

    Direct TV and Elgato

    • Written by from SPRING BRANCH

Easy set up on the 27 inch IMac, Elgato software is top rate, simple and easy to use. Can't speak for Dish Network equipment but with a new Direct TV install it does attach to the Genie with component cables. On the mini client the outputs are hdmi and mini din 10 pin a/v, the Elgato inputs are component and mini din 10 pin a/v, so you are limited to 720 dpi [all the a/v connection supports] unless you get a hdmi to component adaptor or ask your Direct TV installer for an adaptor [ they may not have one].Then you will get 1080 resolution. Picture quality using the a/v connector is good to half screen on a late 2011 27" IMac, above half screen it is to grainy, the video works flawless though.

    Nice Tool To Record Everything!

    • Written by from Portland

My family and I were looking for a device to record the news and we were told about this device from an Apple Store employee. This is the best recording device out on the market. It is easy to use and the picture quality is HD.

Worked Great better than I imagined

    • Written by from Aptos

One regret is not buying it sooner so I could see many of the old 8mm tapes of my kids as babies. I had been looking for something like this for a few years. My only complaint is not having more info on setting up from a Sony Camcorder to a mac. I plugged in the yellow and red cord ignored the white cord to the camcorder to the unit and then to my iMac hit record and then hit play on the video camcorder and it worked flawlessly. This product is very easy to use, simple device. Simple software which is faster to download from their site then do the dvd software disc that is included.

    Great Product

    • Written by from Bel Air

I use Comcast/Xfinity and everything worked great, easy to setup, and watching live TV or recorded shows on my iPad was so easy and quality and sound - no problems. Great support from the vendor via email and phone. The only problem I had was Elgato does not yet list the Cisco RNG150N cable box as a set top box so I had to teach it using the remote from comcast. It took several times to position the IR Blaster just right and then teach the box to recognize the numbers from the remote. Once that was done, it worked great. The nice part is you can schedule recording and the software will change the channel on the cable box for you in order to record your schedule program. Export to iPad puts it right in iTunes to sync with your iPhone or iPad.

    Horrible Experience

    • Written by from Simi Valley

I should have quit while I was ahead. I started with an EyeTV Hybrid but wanted HD from my satellite box so I traded that in for the EyeTV HD. Started out with me trying to record some VHS videos to a Macbook Pro. The audio kept cutting out. Then I tried watching TV on the iMac. The video would freeze and when it would finally come back there would be no audio. The only way to get it back was to disconnect the device or restart the software. This happens 10-15 times per hour of TV. Recording a show is impossible. Too bad this item is 'non-returnable' to the Apple Store. I have a $200 waste of silicone and plastic.

The only bad purchase from the apple store. The system constantly freezes on my iMac and help from the company has been cryptic at best and nonexistent . Apple should not sell this system at their store.

    Freezes/ Locks up iMac

    • Written by from Joliet

I agree with the others on here that had the same problem, this Locks up or Freezes my iMac all the time. I have to Hard reboot my iMac to get it back going. I have used other Eye TV products before and never had the problem, but this one is terrible. I will be returning it! Please do something about this Eye TV.

Painful to set up - outdated technology

    • Written by from Woodbridge

They need new cable boxes added. Comcast has new boxes and the remotes weren't easy to program. Took 10 tries each number.

If I had $225 a month for cable HD DVR, I'd avoid this HD recorder.

    Great product

    • Written by from Westport

This is really easy to set up and does exactly what it describes. The picture quality is outstanding on my 27" screen using Cablevision HD box. I didn't buy it to record shows so haven't tried that yet.

I don't know what problems others have had but I'm delighted.

    Worst recorder on the market

    • Written by from Roswell

I replaced a Win7 PC and Hauppauge TV recorder card, and this product does not live up to the high standard set by Apple. It does not consistently change channels with the low quality remote or when the device is changing the channel for a recording. Many of the recordings have gaps in the picture and the sound, so you only see or hear part of the recorded content. I strongly recommend that you not purchase this product.

    crashes like crazy

    • Written by from philadelphia

I have a brand new mac mini with 8g of ram. This is the only thing running and the computer freezes on a daily basis.

Other than that the remote is horrible. I really thought this would be a great solution for a media center in our house. My wife and kids made me disconnect it all because it always crashed.
