Overall I'm disappointed in the DC290. I bought it recently to replace my iHome IP90 that suddenly died. Compared to the iHome, the sound of the Philips is better, but otherwise I prefer the iHome. I like going to sleep with white noise from a white noise app on my iPhone, and waking up to regular FM radio, The white noise part works fine, but getting the radio to turn on in the morning has proven difficult. Usually it just doesn't work at all, though it did for a few days until the need to switch to daylight savings time caused whatever I'd done to get it working to be undone again. The settings in general are not intuitive, and poorly explained in the manual, in contrast to the iHome where everything is more straightforward.

On the other hand, the sound quality, while not as good as a Bose or Tivoli, is quite good, and reception for the FM only radio is quite good too.

    Great Sound! Lousy Manual!

I have an IPod Touch. I bought this unit to wake to music I like. I followed the one manual direction to use my Touch as the alarm sound source by creating a playlist called Philips, but found no other directions for the Touch. I didn't know if it had to be on; and if it did, if I had to start the Music app; and if I did, if I had to select the Philips playlist. I tried all manner of combinations, but only got the alarm to work the way I wanted by leaving the Music app running all night and then waking to whatever tune was playing when the alarm went off. The Philips chat line was useless; the Apple people tried but don't really know the product. I'm going to keeping searching for the answer, and if it doesn't exist, return the radio!

Doesn't work with the iPhone 4

    • Written by from SEVERNA PARK

Not sure which case a previous poster has on his iPhone but with the standard-issue Apple iPhone 4 bumper, it's just not possible to get a proper seat on the charger base. The bumper gets in the way and holds the iPhone 4 a few millimeters to high off the charger. Works great with the bumper removed. though. Sound is very good and a big improvement over the iHome IP90 (which I also have and bought the Philips to do a side-by-side comparison). If it were not for the bad iPhone 4/bumper problem, I'd definitely choose the Philips over the iHome.

    Too bad, nice machine.
