Software is junk, service is worse

    • Written by from New York

I have been using NeatDesk for a couple of years. I have had my problems but they have always been resolved with some pain (especially with the technical support available). Recently, the software crashed a couple of times at launch and again after scanning a few documents. After the second crash, I could not access my data. The first time I called the tech rep seemed to know nothing. Said he would send an email the next day but that didn't happen. I spent nearly 2 hours on the phone that day (the first thing I had to do was PAY for support). The next day I spent about 45 minutes on the phone mainly waiting for a rep. At least this time the rep knew what to do and the fix took a few minutes. After the fix, the software crashed again and I could not access my data. This time, however, I knew what to do. Now, I upgraded to Mac's Yosemite and the software won't launch. After paying for support, I have been on the phone for 45 minutes and no one has yet answered my call! I WILL SWITCH TO ANOTHER VENDOR AS SOON AS I CAN!!!

    Neat Scanner just OK

    • Written by from SAN ANTONIO

Bought the scanner in 2012. OK to keep receipts which fade away over time. Good organization in the system. HOWEVER while scanning receipts you really have to pay attention since you will have to constantly or almost constantly check date, amount and vendor. I do not have daily receipts so it works for me, but if you are a big business with lots of receipts I do not recommend at all.

    Don't bother.

    • Written by from Los Angeles

The hardware is decent enough, but I only say that because I've resigned myself to the turn-scanner-off-and-on-and-off-and-on-while-the-app-is-open-or-maybe-closed dance. Scanning in multiple receipts through the feeder is a nice idea, but requires too much manual intervention to be relied upon. Same goes for OCR- it's relatively accurate most of the time, but for my record keeping, I need 100% accuracy. So, once again, manual intervention is required if you want to rely on it.

The biggest problem, however, is that the software is buggy and Neat doesn't seem to have any interest in updating it, at least for the Mac (it's been over a year since the last release). They seem to be focused exclusively on their silly cloud subscription service and letting the rest of it wither on the vine.

I bought the NeatDesk 2.5 years ago and, while the quality of the scans were grainy, it did work. Over those two+ years, I scanned in all my paid bills, etc. Recently, the scanner/software malfunctioned and started scanning every page as a separate document, always double-sided all scans and every document showed up as pink. When I downloaded the software update (thinking it would help), the whole thing quit working completely!!! I have 50% of 2014 scanned and lost. NeatDesk's response was that they did not support my OS so could not help me. What a mess!

    Awful Service

    • Written by from Toronto

I had used an earlier version of the Neat Receipts scanner and decided to upgrade with my new Mac. An expensive decision I regret every month I see my credit card bill and try to contact Neat to cancel their cloud service. I signed up for the trial not realizing that there was no way to cancel without cancelling my credit card as customer service is impossible to reach and unresponsive except for automated replies. The scanner itself is no better than other on the market and it is let down by the software; you would be far better buying a good scanner and separate software such as Paperless.

    Sick and Tired of Neat

    • Written by from Tarboro

I purchased a Neat Scanner in 2009 as I passed through the Atlanta Airport. Seemed like a great way to scan and keep receipts. Especially since being an international traveler, keeping track of receipts is a daunting task. At first, it was fun and was doing it, but then it was a pain to plug in a scanner and carry around on the road. When it came time to sending reports, there was a problem, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Philippine, Hong Kong, and US receipts all in the same file and no one at Neat willing to set up international currencies. For years I have dealt with this by converting Neat reports into a spread sheet and creating/sorting the fields.

Well Years go on, and now Neat has the Neat Cloud. All fine and dandy except the convenience and security that they promise is not there. I started noticing that more and more of my receipts were staying in a state of Processing to the cloud. So I contacted Neat and they told me to delete the program from my phone and start over. WHAT? I will definitely lose the files that have not uploaded to the Cloud! and Yes is the answer that I got back and sorry for the incovienence.

Well there are about 50 receipts that have been lost for sure. . . and now one customer of Neat (Unless I can influence more). From what I see about Neat, they offer a product that suits a few people in their sales and do not care to make things work for all of their customers. If there is a problem - all the warm and fuzzy's that advertising did to get you to buy the product are gone in a heart beat.

I am not sure what product is out there that beats Neat . . . But I am certainly on the hunt. Unless you are always in the USA and only spend US dollars, and always have perfect internet connections. . . This is not the product for you!

    no I cloud support

    • Written by from Kelowna

I am shocked at neat, you buy their product then they want to get into the cloud business. They should have had I cloud and dropbox integration as that seems to be the standard. unfortunately this does not seem to be fair and cost effective for everyone. People are not stupid, i wish I would have purchased a different scanner.

After one day of having this scanner it broke. Scanner makes loud clicking sound and does not pass through the paper. I emailed support and still waiting with no response on the 4th day. Should have known better from buying a product that runs infomercials.

Our Neat scanner stopped working about 1 day out of the time period to return it. It no longer feeds the paper at all no matter what.
Also, I might add to the warnings out there about avoiding the use of the sexy software that comes with that scanner which creates a "Library" of searchable documents. That software is going to limit what you can do with your files. It will be a sad day if upgrades to it ever become unavailable. Your files will be unreadable unless you have the Neat software. It is better to tell the scanner to just scan to PDF. That way you will have a file that is not locked up into some proprietorial bit of software which may or may not be around 10 years from now. I would like to just say that we have several Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners in our office and they work really, really well. They cost about the same as the Neat, but way more reliable on both Mac and PC.
As to the searchable part of archiving, a good copy of Adobe Acrobat will do the same type of OCR recognition. And the Fujitsu can be set to do the same at the time of the scan. Either works well. I would avoid the Neat scanner. At this point, ours is just a paper weight.

    NeatDesk for Mac Is Worthless

    • Written by from Marshall

Well, it looks nice. It doesn't work. Gets worse every time I try it again. I am going to send it back. No phone number for help. Sent email message--they will get back to me. I knew better. My wife wanted the blasted scanner.

I purchased my NeatDesk about 6/years ago. 18 months later, I started having problems when Apple changed my Mac's OS... Neat exchanged my NeatDesk for a new one at absolutely no cost.

My current NeatDesk is in constant use for my small business. After scanning in the receipts, I export directly to iBank (previously I exported to Quicken). All data transfers beautifully. There is absolutely nothing bad I can say about this product, except that I do not have the newest Wi-Fi NeatDesk!

Going paperless was one of the best decisions I've made. I can't imagine it any other way.

If You Own One - Get Out Now

    • Written by from LIBERTYVILLE

If you own a Neat Scanner - you should export your library to PDF files because in order to have useable data when Neat goes out of business. You should also stop using the Neat Scanner (yes, a bummer to have wasted the money) and get a SnapScan.

As you can see from the other reviews, the Neat Scanner just doesn't work. My experience over the past year with a MacMini - it takes a good 5 minutes of opening and closing the Neat application while unplugging and plugging in the scanner before it will do a scan. The Neat application takes a long time to open - which is frustrating to workflow.

If you don't own a Neat Scanner DON'T BUY ONE!!

PS: It gets one star because I couldn't figure out how to do negative stars.

Absolute waste of money and time!

    • Written by from Fort Worth

I do not recommend NeatDesk canner for Mac.

The 'automatic' scanner constantly issues through more than one receipt at a time. The analyzing software does not work 99% of the time. Therefore, the only way to generate a digital record of a receipt is to manually feed a receipt through the scanner and type in or correct the 'analyzed' information from the receipt.

Bogus claims by Neat Company of this scanner's capability and no service after the sale. I wish I had checked other options and urge anyone considering this scanner to do the same. There has to be a better product available.

    Heartburn Medicine Not Included!

    • Written by from Spokane Valley

I've been using the neat desktop scanner since 2008. I can tell you from an extreme amount of frustration, jubilation and overall disappointment I would not recommend this scanner. In fact I'm amazed that apple has it in this store.

Truth is... the scanner itself is a well made rugged, hard working device that I have no complaints about. I'd give it a 5 star rating.
The software on the other hand is the worst I've ever experienced, EVER! The updates are few and far between and I could write many pages on all the problems I've encountered over many years of trying to deal with this company and the software.

I've had enough and am offering mine for sale today on craigslist. Cheap!

    exercise in futility

    • Written by from Eastern Passage

The Neat scanners do not work with Apple's Image Capture software under Mavericks (OS 10.9). When attempting to scan a document, the scan never finishes and the scanned document never appears. This makes the scanner useless outside of the Neat Software. In particular, I used to be able to use my Neat Scanner with Mariner Paperless Software. But now I cannot. This is very frustrating as it is an expensive piece of hardware. I'd recommend a Fujitsu Snap Scan product instead. The Fujitsu scanners are much easier to work with, are more reliable, and have more control over the scan output. Most importantly, the Fujitsu scanners work seamless with Mariner Paperless software.

    amateur buggy software

    • Written by from Orinda

This has crashed numerous times for me. Its buggy behavior, its crash reporting log, indicate that the driver was hoked together from untested unreliable libraries, that the authors did not know how to write stable, robust code, and that the QA was woefully inadequate.

According to their About Us numerous 'third party' libraries were used to build it. Most of these were downloaded from private web sites. Which means hobbyists wrote it. C'mon Neat -- if you are selling a product hire a competent programmer to write the driver.

SOLUTION for NEAT Scanning with Mavericks

    • Written by from DUNDAS

    1. Unplug scanner
    2. Hold down option key, then in Finder, go to menu item, “Go” then select “Library”
    3. Open folder “Application Support”
    4. Open folder “NeatWorks”
    5. Delete the folder you find in the NeatWorks folder called “Scans” (you’ll have to provide password permissions as you go through this process)
    6. Create a brand new folder where that one was, with the exact same name, case etc, called “Scans”
    7. Plug the scanner back in, open Neat and scan!

FIX for flashing red lights on NEATDESK

    • Written by from TAMPA

Following is the reply I got from Neat about the flashing red lights: So far it has worked, though I worry about the small black plastic piece which seems so tiny it may be doomed to fail.
"Please try the following to resolve your issue:

Press the black button to the right of the business cards slot on your scanner. The front of the unit will pop open.

Inside you'll see a black plastic piece with two rubber flaps. Nudge this piece to the left and you'll see it lifts up.

Turn the large rubber roller behind the flaps with your finger to make sure nothing is caught there. The wheel will only spin in one direction. Once done, put the flaps back down into place.

On the door side of the scanner, you'll see there are two clear plastic flaps. In between these flaps you should see a small black piece of plastic sticking out. Tap this piece to make sure it goes in and pops back out.

If you do not see the small black plastic piece between these two clear flaps, it may be stuck inside the scanner. Please try using a paper clip or utility screwdriver to poke in the hole between these flaps to try to free the piece.

Once done, close the front of the scanner and try scanning another item. Let me know how this works for you."
