Some complain about having to hit the connect button after not using it for a while. I didn't mind that. I use the numeric keypad for entering numbers into tool pallets (3D aps, sizing elements in Adobe Illustrator to precise measurements, and settings in After Effects, etc.). This means when I need it, I use it often enough to keep it connected.

Unfortunately, it only worked for a week. Now it won't connect at all. Pity. It matched the Apple keyboard well, although a bit thicker. If you can't connect, that doesn't do much good. I love Apple products, but I wish they'd ween themselves of the mindset that everything should be so paired down, it's wonderful up to the first 98%, but they needlessly strip out that last 2% leaving you with what could be the perfect product "If only it had x or did y." It makes no sense to strip out the key pad from the high end version (wireless) keyboard, but leaving it on the lesser priced corded version.

If Apple would just make a dern wireless keyboard with a number pad, it would be perfect and their customers wouldn't have to search high and low experimenting with cra@ppy 3rd party work-arounds, hoping to find one that works. Get it together Apple!

Does not maintain Bluetooth connection to iMac

I purchased this keypad at the Apple Store along with my iMac. I assumed that, once paired to the iMac via Bluetooth, it would be instantly available anytime I needed numeric keypad functionality. Instead, the keypad's Bluetooth connection to the iMac is lost everytime the iMac goes into Sleep mode, and upon waking, a lenthy process of "pairing" the device to the iMac is required EVERY TIME. The additional instructions – applied as a sticker to the back of the device – seem to anticipate this issue but do not resolve it.

nice, but it's not the aesthetic equivalent to the Apple wireless keyboard

Was really excited to stumble across this in the Apple store at the Mall. Asked if we could open the package so I could see it... Should have insisted. It looks like it's the perfect companion to the wireless keyboard (which is missing a 10-key... I'll save my disgruntled commentary on this so that this review might actually make it pass the Apple review police). Anyway... I can't say much for the functionality of this 10-key (yet), but I will say that the case is plastic and is deceptively thicker than the profile of the wireless keyboard. The "girth" of the profile is painted white plastic. Hard to see in the pictures. Keys feel pretty similar to the Apple keyboard, but with slightly more travel. So far... not a bad product, but I'm a little disappointed in the aesthetics and the cheap plastic feel.

Apple should stop selling this product!

From the first attempt to keep this product connected (and in the correct mode) to finally giving up and using it as a bluetooth paperweight, this has been by far the worst product I've purchased at my local Apple store (Providence, RI). I'm trying to figure out if I can bring it back for a refund as it ABSOLUTELY does not perform as advertised.
If there were a negative star rating this product would a minus 4.
It does not work with MS Excel at all, the very reason I purchased it in the first place as I use Excel heavily for work. It will not enter numbers in a form online (i.e., entering a credit card number for a purchase). Its only capability is that it will function as a calculator, albeit a very expensive one.
Come on Apple, even a cursory examination would have shown you that this is an inferior product.

    Worth a second purchase!

With all the low reviews on this, I feel compelled to write my own. I purchased one of these a year ago and LOVED it. I used it as a 10 key pad, as a calculator, as a happy tool. Then I placed some batteries in the section of my computer bag I store the 10key pad and the display screen cracked. I immediately stopped by Apple to get a new one, only to find they were not selling them. I was unable to find anything online so I limped along with an old fashioned calculator. I was very excited to see this product reappear and plan to buy a backup in case anything happens to my new 10 key pad. I don't want to live without this product again.

I've had this item for two months. I use excel almost daily, so the need for a fast alternative numerical input was needed. This product never syncs up on its own and rarely does when I bluetooth it. The other reviews are dead on with functionality, that it's overpriced and more of a hassle than it's worth. Apple dropped the ball for selling this in their stores. I never would have bought it if an associate didn't recommend it, it was a poor impulse buy without reading the reviews. I should have bought the wired board like I set out to do. I would not recommend this to anyone. I would give it 0 stars if I could!

    Blue tooth keypad

Frankly it is a drag. I cannot get it to register straight way so I had to go through this song and dance routine to get it to work and then it goes to sleep sometimes requiring a whole new rewake. It so frustrated me I threw it forcefully in the bin I don't have time to muck around with rubbish like this so make something that works. Please.

I purchased this because I am a teacher and need the keypad to enter grades. I have taken it into the store a number of times, and each time I get it home it does not work. Apple needs to make a good quality keypad and throw this one to the dogs! It is very frustrating.

I've purchased this keypad for more than 3 months now. It works just fine for me so I've decided to write a review about this. I like the idea that it's a combination of calculatoer and keypad and I can use the SEND key to send the numbers on LED to computer. It's easy to connect and use. It surprised me that people are rating this product so low because of the connection problem. Often enough my keypad goes into sleep mode, but it only take 3-5 seconds to wake up. I don't find any problem with that. I think it's a good problem and I would recommend it everyone.

Not worth a third of the cost - Save your money or buy something else

At first glance the box it arrived in looked very nice, but it broke trying gently to open it.

Then came the real disappointment seeing that I should have not relied on looking at the picture. It was just cheap plastic that was both higher in and deeper in profile then the Apple keyboard. So it does not look good having next to a good looking high quality Apple Keyboard.

Working with it do not speed up data input that much dramatically since you end up with having to switch back and forth to the cursor keys on the real keyboard to jump between the cells in the spreadsheet.

Yes I knew there was no useful scientific keys like the square-root or financial keys, but at that price you would expect higher build quality.

For half the price you could buy a Canon X Mark I Keypad or Mouse instead, or surely find a competitive brand of higher quality. Or possibly the LMP Bluetooth Keypad for pure data input without any calculator features built in.

Truly regret buying this product which arrived a few hours ago. Sadly it's not worth the hassle to return to AppleStore. Everything else I have bought from there has always been of high quality, so I cut my losses and give it to my four year old daughter to play with.

Is It A Bug Or A Feature?

    • Written by from Lansing

15 of 16 people found this useful

The product description lists the fact that this keypad goes to sleep after four minutes as a 'feature'. If the 'Wake' key woke up the device instantaneously I would agree. But it takes so long to get the keypad to wake up that it's often faster to just hunt and peck the number keys on the Apple keyboard. Aesthetically it would be agreeable to me if it were a little smaller, matching the Apple devices in overall and key size (it is bigger for no apparent reason).

I think this is a great idea, poorly realized. I like the calculator in a keypad idea very much. When it is actually connected to my iMac it's very convenient. Simply including an option to turn off the 'sleep feature' would have gained it a couple of stars in my estimation.

The included instructions will NOT pair this unit up with your Mac! Go to their website, such as it is, and there you will eventually find the correct procedure. I spent a highly frustrating, precious hour of my life, fruitlessly attempting to pair this, to no avail.
Displayed in the box, you think: Nice, the missing keypad to compliment an Apple wireless keyboard....then you take it out of the box and you discover that, not only is is entirely made of cheap plastic, but it doesn't have the Apple attention to design that you have grown to expect from peripherals.
I'm highly disappointed that Apple let this product claim space in their store, and if my day wasn't so pressed for time, I'd storm back and get a refund.
After examining it, if I could revisit the dollar value; I would say that it's worth $12.99 - tops, and that's generous.
    Great idea - terrible execution!

This keypad helps me a lot on my job. Since I am working at airport and always need the most updated number data, this keypad increases my productivity on my job. This Bluetooth numeric keypad combines the functions of a ten-key for spreadsheet data entry and a standalone calculator for the ultimate convenience. It includes features such as an on/off switch, 12-digit LCD display, and OS selector switch for 100% Mac/Windows compatibility. Also, the built-in "SEND" key sends the calculated result directly into a spreadsheet to eliminate typing errors. No need to carry a receiver dongle when used with a Bluetooth system, the device offers Bluetooth transmission which is a great feature for me.

Great little keypad but not perfect

    • Written by from Orlando

14 of 14 people found this useful

    Pros:
+separate LCD for using like a regular calculator, and can send results to computer
+buttons are chicklet style and overall appearance is just like my bluetooth keyboard
    +freedom to position it wherever

    Cons:
-no "delete" functionality, on a PC (like XP in boot camp) this is bad, if you're using the Windows Calculator app you can only clear recently entered numbers, to clear out a result you have to use your mouse and click the clear ("C)+") button (or Fn + Delete)
-takes longer than the reported 5 seconds to wake up first time, but throughout the day will wake up instantly after short periods without use
-significantly deeper/taller than the Apple bluetooth keyboard (I don't care, the buttons are same size)
-made of plastic; for this price it should have an aluminum casing

Had two of these in our office for almost a year. Both of these devices were used on a desks - they did not travel and were not moved or dropped. One connects to a Mac Book Pro workstation and one connects to an iMac.

One quit working about 6 months after purchase. Tried changing the batteries, deleting device in bluetooth settings and pairing again. The computer recognizes the device, but it will not accept the pair code. Tried to pair without a code and still no success. Contacted Apple support since it was purchased at an Apple store and was told to contact SMK. Contacted SMK support via email with no reply.

About one month ago, the second device started to have the same problems as the first, however I was finally able to get it to successfully pair. However, based upon the Mode key intermittently working, I am sure its demise will be soon.

I would not recommend this device.

This product leaves much to be desired. It is constantly loosing its connection. I just got it back from the manufacturer who assured me that it had been repaired, after I had it for only a couple of months, and I'm right back to the same issues as before. I can't even remember how many times I've had to reset the thing and re-establish the blue tooth connection. Awful product.

I give it a 2 because having the keypad is better than not having it, but it loses the 3 other stars because of what the other reviews have said. I don't mind that you have to hit the "wake" button to use it but it takes way too long connect after hitting wake. It defeats the purpose of having the keypad for ease if you could have already used the numbers on the wireless keyboard in the amount of time it takes to "wake" the numeric keypad. If this issue is fixed and all you need to do is press wake right before hitting your numbers, then I give it a 3or4. If you didn't have to hit wake at all and it was the same easyness as the keyboard I would give it a 4or5.
