those complaining that there is no warning of QT Pro keys not working with the latest version do not know what they are talking about. There are multiple warnings indicating the QT 6 serials will not work in QT7.

Poof! Loss of Pro Licence After Auto Upgrade to QT7

Written by MK from New York

    Nov 26, 2005

I use the OSX auto-upgrade feature to keep my mac up-to-date. So when QT7 was on the list of products to install I was unaware that I would lose my previously purchased licence I was using with QT6 after QT7 installed itself. (silly me had not written down my activation key anywhere - and apple sales could not find a record of my purchase - so I can't go back to QT6 Pro anyway)

Better warning of the loss of previously purchased Pro licence would be helpful.

    Upgrade fee unexpected?

    Written by KH

    Nov 24, 2005

If you were to upgrade, say Adobe Photoshop would you be surprised that you need to repurchase it? Because QT is a download doesn't make it differnt. You upgrade you pay like anything else.
On the other hand, avi support is a little weak and some features should really be included without the need for pro, like full screen.
Make money from lisencing not users Apple! To maintain QT popularity and distribution, especially to non mac users you have to provide.

Where did the software go that I paid for?

Written by CH from San Francisco

    Nov 21, 2005

As others have mentioned it is reprehensible that installing QT7notpro was as easy as it was (if I recall correctly it got upgraded through software update) given that it would then go on to to wipe out my old key, delete the old program, and replace it with software that is crippled and basically featureless compared to the software I paid for.

To Apple, If I buy a software package from you, you best not replace it with the free version during an "update" operation. You could easily have renamed *my* software QT6 and saved the old key somewhere, you chose not to. Yes chose, I don't believe this was an honest mistake, shame on you.

I decided not to falsely rate QT 1 star, because it is a good piece of software, at least the one that I bought was, but it doesn't get more than 3 b/c there is free software that handles more media still.

This is a fantastic product. Do not be suaded by the users below. Using a Mac everyday is alot like only having flown first class and never coach: After awhile you start noticing the little scratches on the silver plated forks they give you.

Windows users do not have anything remotely like this. This is a true multi-use media mac tool. Great.

QT Pro works like a charm on my iMac G5, except for converting to the new H.264 format. What a time consuming task! Also, Apple shouldn't charge $30 for each and every upgrade – loyal customers deserve better.

Still, QT Pro is a great product with dozens of great "pro" features, but it lacks proper marketing.

    Useless for video iPod!

Written by RV from Los Angeles

    Nov 4, 2005

Quicktime pro 7 is a rip off. I just bought the video iPod, and of course apple wants to get the most from your wallet. So you have to go out and by quicktime pro 7 in order to convert videos that you already own (not from iTunes). It turns out that many of the videos we all download from the internet are in a "muxed" format. Meaning that iMovie can't convert it to a version for iPod video without there being a problem, ie-no sound. So I purchased Quicktime pro 7 expecting to be able to convert the video clip to a format that plays both video and sound for the video iPod. Guess what, there's not way to do it! I just wasted my money buying this useless software. So if any of you are looking to buy this to convert the videos that you already own, then don't...it doesn't work...at least not for the iPod video. I can't do anymore than what I was able to do with iMovie. In fact I can do more with iMovie, since I was able to use the video clip and add audio from the song I already had from my iTunes library. In the end I got my video with sound. Nothing with quicktime!

QT Pro - still the best!

    Written by AF from Mississauga

    Nov 4, 2005

While some may complain about Apple's infrequent requirement to pay for QuickTime Pro, nothing compares for features and ease of use. As a user since 1997, I cannot imagine more "bang for the buck" for the relatively few dollars necessary to keep up to date with QT Pro. And it keeps getting better!

    Quicktime Pro for iPod?

Written by CH from North Oaks

    Nov 1, 2005

I recently purchased the new iPod video and wanted a way to play videos (besides music videos purchased on the iTunes Music Store) on my iPod. I decided to purchase this program in hopes of doing so. I thought for sure since this is Apple, this would be a flawless procedure, but to my surprise, this was not the case. To be able to make a video play on the iPod, you must first convert the file into a seperate file (file>export>Movie to iPod (320x240). It took nearly 30 minutes to convert 1 minute long video into a file that will play on the iPod. Then you can drag and drop that m4v file into the iPod icon in iTunes, and it will now work on the iPod.
I would have given Quicktime Pro 1 star but I am being merciful because it does have other features (including full-screen video playback, and you can save files from online as quicktime files (a feature the normal Quicktime 6 did for free)

    Written by MG from Kingston

Hey, the upgrade to Quicktime 7 Pro is a major addition of capabilities over Quicktime Pro 6. If you don't have $30 once a year for this level of software improvement than perhaps you should find a hobby that is a tad more stagnant than desktop video editing... Sheesh. What a bunch of whiners.

    Pro upgrade policy needs review

    Written by DN from Denver

I agree with the bulk of these reviews and complaints over the forced deactiviation of V.6 and the $30 Pro fee after just paying it on V.6. Dealing with the Apple brand is a pleasant exprience 99% of the time. Why taint your loyal customers' experience not to mention the new former PC users over $30? Hardly seems worth it. Take another look.. please!

Better but still not worth paying for!

    Written by DM

    Oct 20, 2005

Apple Quicktime has gotten better over time, version 6 had about a 50% chance of playing a avi file of Divx with the right codecs installed, Now version 7 will play every file type I have which are many, but it is slow and the quality is gittery.
Apple needs to be giving this product to there users Free!
There are 2 programs out there that play any file on the Mac and they are both Free.
So until Apple gets there act together and gives a little back to the devoted users I will use VLC Media Player, there best player for Mac hands down.

    Apple should be ashamed

    Written by RF from Denver

    Oct 20, 2005

Totally agree with the comments on getting no warning that the $30 Quicktime Pro key will be rendered invalid when you upgrade to a new version of the basic program. Apple should be commended for making it so easy to upgrade and producing a good product, but we should be warned on something like this. I wouldn't have upgraded to 7.03 had I known that my Quicktime Pro key would no longer be valid.

I purchased quicktime pro last week. I then upgraded to quicktime 7.0.3 two days later. The instructions state that quicktime pro is inactive and I need to purchase a new key! If this is the end result I am finished with apple.

Workaround for losing Pro license after upgrading

    Written by KS from alexandria

    Oct 13, 2005

If you upgrade to a new major version of QuickTime, you have to pay another $30 for the new Pro version. The QT installation overwrites your old version by default, and nullifies your Pro license. To make matters worse, it's difficult to find older versions of QT on the net. To get around this, make a copy of the QuickTime.App file as soon as you license the Pro version (ie. if it's QT6, name it QuickTime6.App) and you should still be able to use the old one.
