qt pro is an excellent product if you know how to use it. it was extremely confusing at first, but so are alot of other programs apple throws at us.
now, even if it is terrible for you, it's 30 freaking dollars, i mean please. don't give a terrible review for this thing until you know how to use it...
that's pretty much all, i love it. don't pay attention to the other reviews, it's a great product

    Installation

    • Written by from Houston

I am used to installing software for the Mac, but the installation of Quicktime Pro was confusing and still cannot figure out by looking at my applications folder if I have installed the software. I figure it has been installed because I see the key numbers provided upon purchase confirmation in my Quicktime Player preferences window. But no icon showing Quicktime Pro appears, only Quicktime Player. I would have preferred a more obvious visual clue.

Quicktime is an alright buy depending on who you are and what you are going to do with it. if you want to export movie files out of quicktime pro you won't get sound with them unless they are demuxed files. if they are muxed you'll have to find a 3rd party software to do so, most of the time they are free. you can find out if it is muxed of demuxed if you click on the file and "get info." apple should tell people this. hope this helps some people!

    converting to .wmv files

    • Written by from Raleigh

When I try to convert .mov file to .wmv (windows media file) it will only convert up to 30 seconds of the movie. Does anyone out there have any idea why this happens this way? Any ideas about converting .mov to .wmv?

QT Pro is very useful if you know what you are doing. It is not a magical or endless set of codecs. If QT can't play your files now buying QT Pro won't help. If you need help playing files in QT look at DivX for Mac, Flip4Mac, and etc.

    quicktime is powerful

    • Written by from Portland

I'm amazed at these poor reviews. Quicktime Pro is practically an entire editing platform -- add subtitling, color effects, copy and paste to do editing, record from a webcam or mic. One of my favorite features -- create an entire stop motion movie by converting a folder of images to a movie. Then export it for the web, for DVD, for anything.

With the proper plugins, it plays nearly any format (now even wmv w/ flip4mac).
Export to nearly any format. Great fullscreen mode w/ transparent controller. These reviews strike as from people who don't understand what they're working with. I couldn't work w/o quicktime pro.

Lots of people say, that it can convert movie files for ipod, but without sound, if it's not .mov file. Well, I just don't understand, why they don't convert their movies into .mov file with iMovie. There is nothing wrong with this product, until you mention that when you upgrade your qt pro to new version of qt, you need to repay to have an qt pro.

I'm just 13 years old, and i have just an G3 ibook, but still, this product works GREAT!!! You just need to know how to use it.

Please learn a thing or two about video!!!

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I have to tell you, reading many of the reviews below makes me suspicious about who's using this product. I work with video, animation, and graphics on a daily basis—professionally—so I have experience with QT. Needless to say, the ridiculous and vague reviews about QT7 Pro leads me to believe that there's a serious lack of technical [video] education to use QT effectively.

Different codecs, data rates, dimensions, etc all have a profound effect on the quality of the work you're expecting to get. Do your homework! And just because you can't rip commercial DVDs doesn't mean you have to get mad at Apple. Jeeeezz!

    Stupid Mistake...

    • Written by from Miami

Well after looking over the reviews I purchased it anyhow. I wanted to try it out and was hoping that it would provide quality 3gp file transfers (portable PDA movies). It turned out to be very poor quality on both my Mac and PDA. I spent a few hours digging online and with the manual trying to convert short, descent quality movies. Yes, it can be done, but not watchable...what a disapointment! The features found really are not worth upgrading for...trust the reviews...trust me and do a web search for a better software program that has better value or just stick with the QuickTime Basic...unless of course you want to shell out $30 every 6 months or so just to keep the software updated when a new version comes out. If you want to get a refund...well good luck with that too...do a little exploring on the online Support and Store websites before making the same mistake that many of us have made.

Ignore the overall rating. QT Pro is a great product.

    • Written by from New Orleans

For all those complaining that QT Pro doesn't do what you thought it would (import WMV files, for example), try reading the product specs before you buy next time.

And for those having technical issues (i.e., where's my sound), a product review forum isn't the same as a product support forum. You really shouldn't rate a product until you've explored the remedies to your issues. It might even be a case of - *gasp* - user error. However, if all you can say is, "my sound doesn't play anymore," and can't explain why -- then you clearly haven't asked why. Next time try posting in Apple > Support > Discussions > Quicktime instead. There are a lot of nice users there that will help.

In short, I've been using QT Pro for years. It's simply one of the most solid and versatile media apps out there. With over 55 media standards supported for importing, over 25 for exporting, nearly 20 video effects -- and the capacity for simple video editing and resizing -- what the heck more do you want for $29?

Would I like it to do more? Sure. But for the price and quality of product, there is absolutely no better deal. Ignore the complaints, read the specs, and buy. It's worth every penny.

By the way, for the WMV moaners out there, look into a product called Flip4Mac. It will add WMV compatibilty to QT. Product functionality levels range from free to $179. Wow, $179 dollars. How many codecs does F4M deal with again? Oh, that's right...1.

Apple told me to buy this product to transfer video to my IPOD. And i try to download a 60 second video and it takes me more than 2 hours just to export it. It's not my computer that's slow it's the quicktime. Instead of QuickTime Pro it should be called Slowtime Pro. Because it is hypper slow.

Quicktime Pro should be included with Apple products

    • Written by from Stow

Apple makes some amazing products. But being asked to pay $30.00 every time there's a Quicktime Pro update is ridiculous.

We spend enough of our hard-earned money on expensive Apple products like the G5, the small army of iPods andsoftware such as Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro.

Quicktime Pro should be bundled with these products. The license should be good for two years with free updates.

My rating would be 5 stars because QT Pro is an excellent product but I'm only giving 3 stars because of the $30.00 factor.
