Workaround for losing Pro license after upgrading

    • Written by from alexandria

If you upgrade to a new major version of QuickTime, you have to pay another $30 for the new Pro version. The QT installation overwrites your old version by default, and nullifies your Pro license. To make matters worse, it's difficult to find older versions of QT on the net. To get around this, make a copy of the QuickTime.App file as soon as you license the Pro version (ie. if it's QT6, name it QuickTime6.App) and you should still be able to use the old one.

I bought Quicktime and thought it would be another hard to use video viewer and editor. It worked really well in Leopard and Tiger before I upgraded. My only compliant was that whenever I wanted to convert video to a cell phone, I always head to get validation from my company that makes the phone. It isn't Apple's problem, but next time could you please integrate a validation program?

Use it all the time - Never Fails Me

Quicktime 7.0 Pro is a terrific product. In fact, I have it on both my P.C. and my Mac Mini. I couldn't live without it. [Although I had to shell out for each, I still think it is worth it]

I use the export feature all the time to compress using the H.264 compression codec. If you are not sure how to do this, check out Macbreak.com -- there is a very good segment on exporting and compressing using Quicktime Pro 7.

The last point is when you view videos on the web through google there is an option to download video to a video ipod. Guess what the engine is for this? - - You guessed it - Quicktime.

    Enough said.

Waste of money for format conversions!

Literature states "Export to over a dozen different video and audio formats." Too bad none can address the audio problems encountered when importing video clips from iPhoto to iMovie. There's a reason this product is non-refundable!
There is plenty of freeware that will do the job nicely.

Agree with many other reviewers. Still can't e-mail these video files and get others to be able to open them, there is no indication that I even have Pro when I look at "About" QT Player. $30 down the toilet?

Because of the excellent stability and performance of the Apple Mac platform, I am not often inclined to criticize...

This whole Quicktime X/Quicktime 7/Quicktime Pro upgrade is a train wreck. With Snow Leopard as the OS, you have install Quicktime 7 from the OS installation CD and then unlock the Pro functionality using the Pro registration key. This process is a bit kludgy considering Apple's normal attention to ease of use.

The big problem is that unlocked Quicktime 7 Pro reverts to Player for some strange reason. I have not spent any time figuring out this obvious defect--and I shouldn't need to. Attention Apple, fix this nonsensical process or issue a refund; this is the sort of issue I would expect to encounter on a Wintel platform, not Mac.

Video encoding bug. Audio gets out of sync with video.

I wanted to create video podcast. When encoding simple videos through iSight, the video gets out of sync with the audio after only a few minutes. I see a lot of people having this problem and so far no good solution.

I tried external firewire camera as well. No luck. Playing back previously created content may be ok. But encoding simply does not work right (I have brand new MacBook Pro).

I thought Apple products were going to work together. I just paid 30.00 plus tax for something that won't install on a new MAC.

Be sure to buy the correct version before buying something that you won't be able to use.

Quicktime 10 is on my MAC but this waste of $$ is for QT7.

I thought I was buying an UPGRADE!!!! I wound up just throwing money away.

the only reason why i bought pro, is because i thought that it would accept all movie files.. but IT DOESN'T!!!! You could probably only watch 70% of the movies that you want to dowload!!! NOT WORTH 30 dollars.. i feel ripped =( ..at least i can put my movies into full screen now..

    QT 7 to QT 10

    • Written by from SANTA MONICA

I am thoroughly disappointed in QT 10. QT 7 PRO has been one of the most useful applications. Easy to use, great for quick cutting, useful for work and screwing around. QT 7 was incredibly robust, lots of flexibility. QT 10 is like a narrowly conceived Microsoft product that limits the parameters of what's possible.
PLEASE MAKE A PRO version to QT 10 or at the very least, make it easy to install QT 7 on the new systems .. am having no luck in doing so.

I wish I could give a zero star for this program. It is absolutely waste of investing. Stop working when I upgrade the system to Lion, and now the export function stop working, which was the main reason why I purchase this app in the first place. :(

After going all these months with the limitations of QT 10.0, I rediscovered from an earlier review [Feb./2010] that my old QT Pro was in the Utilities folder. Sure enough, there it was with my registration key still entered and still valid, and now I can do editing like rotating, etc. that I had been used to. If you want the editing abilities of QT 7 Pro, simply go to your Utilities Folder, look for QT 7 Player, and use the QT Menu to Register the product.

A Short Summary of QuickTime 7 Pro

    • Written by from Sunnyvale

In all, this is an excellent product which reflects Apple's personality. The reason for it's low raiting are because of complainers on these comments that say their QuickTime 6 Pro was wiped out with QT7.

Hello guys? What did you UPDATE for? Logic, folks: when you are installing QT7, it uses LOGIC to think: huumm, this user want's to UPGRADE. How in land sakes will the computer know you want to install it WITHOUT removing QT6 Pro.

However, I still agree at the lack of functionality with different video and audio formats, especially with the DVD format. Additionally, the price is just a little bit too high. Therefore, it gets four stars.

Better coverage of avi codecs could justify $30

    • Written by from Hakalau

I'm not going to spend another $30. Recent upgrades in functionality have not impressed me. I still cannot play many of the free "avi" video clips coming my way with very commonly used Windows codecs. My friends send me home movies and I cannot play them. When and if Quicktime gets better coverage of codecs, especially "avi" codecs, then I'll pay. Unfortunately, I see nothing so far in Apple's full-page blurb for the latest Quicktime about this. So I'll limp along for a while with my current Pro version,
