I've used photoshop to make basic posters with image/text layers. Will this work similar or can you recommend an alternative app?
I've been using Photoshop on my work computer as a layout program to design posters/flyers. Basic stuff.. mainly just making text and image layers and then moving them around freely to design the layout. Can this app be used the same way or should I be looking for something else?

can art work be saved in a cmyk format for printing of brochures etc
I frequently, but not frequntly enough to buy photoshop, need to print flyers and brochures where the cmyk format is required. Does Pixelmator have this option?

Yes. The "Magic Wand" tool is very "smart" in Pixelmator. I actually like this tool better than the offerings in Photoshop.

Does the boxed version include a printed user's manual?
The website has an extremely helpful PDF-based user's manual that weighs in at over 200 pages. Is this manual included in the Pixelmator box?

Will it work on Snow Leopard
Will Pixelmator work on OS X 10.6.1? And is it adequately supported and a true substitute for Photoshop??

No, Pixelmator is a standalone application.
