Is this compatible with the QTKit Framework ?
I'm a developper and I am working on an application that is already using the QTKit Framework to get video feed from webcams. I want to change the input device for a more sophisticated camera that only outputs with Composites.
Is this device compatible with QTKit so I don't need to change to code to be able to record what's comming from the new camera system?- Asked by Benoit L from Mascouche

Will the Elgato work with a 1996 JVC GR-AX 94 camcorder? It has a white and yellow outlet. I want to transfer the video to my iMac OS 10.8.2 MLion

AnswerI haven't used this capture device yet, but there is no reason why it shouldn't work. Your camcorder has a composite video output (yellow) and a mono audio output (white), which should be accepted by the Elgato capture.

Best Answer
The red input on the elgato is for the right hand stereo channel , if your video has just yellow and white output then these are the video output and one channel mono sound output , just connect these up and ignore the red and this will function properly.

What is the difference between Elgato and Roxio Easy VHS to DVD (Mac)
I have found a similar product "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD (Mac)" that claims to do a similar job to the Elgato in terms of capturing AV (Vhs) video but is £30 cheaper. Is there any additional benefits to the Elgato worth the additional cost?

Best AnswerThe Elgato-branded device outputs MPEG-4 video, while the Roxio device outputs MPEG-2 files (the same format as commercial DVDs).

Can I use the Elgato hardware/software system to capture audio from cassette tapes as well as video/audio from home videos and VHS tapes??
If the Elgato system is not applicable, what is available to capture just audio, for use on my iPhone via my Mac? Thanks!

Best AnswerNo, the Video Capture is designed to capture video and audio. It's not suitable for audio-only captures.
But for capturing audio, you don't need a separate device. All Macs have audio inputs so you can just connect your audio device to the Mac's input and use QuickTime Player or GarageBand to capture the sound.

Will it maintain the timestamp when recording video from a camcorder?
I want to maintain the timestamp from my DV camcorder and have been looking for a solution. When I transfer the video digitally through a high speed cable to my iMac the timestamp is saved as a separate file. I need to be able to save a video file that contains the video and shows the timestamp together. Thank you.

can I capture audio-only (cassette deck, phono turntable)?

Best AnswerNote that you'll need to use a pre-amp if capturing from turntable. The signals are too weak to do basic line-in recording. If you're just interested in capturing audio you can just run RCA out on your device to the 1/8" stereo "line in" on your computer & record using Garage Band, or any other audio recording software. Adapters are cheap.

Best AnswerYes, I use it for that. The best you will get is 480p though, plus you can't stream with it. I would recommend "Black Magic" instead. $50.00 more and you can record 720p, plus stream to justin.tv or ustream.

Best AnswerYou'll need cables to connect your VCR (or whatever video source you're using) to the Video Capture. These can be standard RCA video and audio cables, or s-video and RCA audio, depending on your source devices outputs.

Does the Elgato EyeTV Hydrid allow you to transfer VHS movies or is the Elgato Video Capture better suited?
- Asked by Derek G from Toronto

Best AnswerYes, the Hybrid can be use to capture from VHS tapes as well. There a some differences between the way the Hybrid does it, and the Video Capture.
• The Hybrid captures in MPEG-2 format, which is great if you want to go directly to DVD (using Toast for example), but it's not easy to edit and requires recompression to use in iTunes or iMovie.
• The Video Capture captures directly to MPEG-4/H.264 format, so the files are immediately ready to go into iTunes or iMovie, and can be synced to iPods, iPhones and Apple TVs with no further conversion.
• The software for the Video Capture makes the process somewhat simpler than using the Hybrid within EyeTV.
