How can loJack be effective, if i have a password.... someone steals my laptop, they can't login to connect to the internet.. and if they can't login, they'll just change the hard drive... then puff... everything is gone.... so is lojack only useful if you don't have a password...

Best Answeri just wanted to correct you, apple doesn't allow lo jack to be in the bios/flash memory... so if they reformat the hard drive it will go away. I'm a professor at University of California, and i teach a course on security... i do a lab were they must install lo jack on a mac, and lo jack is just like any other program, it doesn't have any special bios/flash place where you can store it, if the hard drive gets reformatted...
So this is true if you have a password, so if your laptop is stolen it won't be able phone home, because the theft won't be able to login to the internet.- Answered by Arian F from Merced

Best Answer
No, the system requirements for LoJack are a PowerPC or Intel Based Mac computer running Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) or higher. MobileMe and the Find My iPad feature would be a much better solution for iPad and costs only $69 if you buy it with an iPad at your local Apple Store.

What are the chances my data will be deleted in error?
- Asked by Ryan K from Winter Park
- Oct 24, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerZero chance really, as there are quite a few procedures in place to ensure you really want the data deleted. First, data delete can only be performed on a Mac that has been reported stolen. Second, in order to trigger a data delete, you have to log in to your lojack account online and correctly answer 3 challenge questions. Finally, when you request the data delete service to run, you are asked to confirm that you want to do this. All of these make it highly unlikely if not impossible that your data will be deleted in error.

Does the computer have to be turned on and connected to the internet for it to be found?
- Asked by Sarah S from Rialto
- Oct 22, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes, if your Mac is stolen it does have to be turned on and be connected to the internet so it can contact the lojack monitoring center at least once in order for the recovery team to locate it and give that location information to police so they can recover it.

Does the service guarantee cover the purchase price of the computer? or just the lojack software
Does the service guarantee cover the purchase price of the computer? or just the lojack software
- Asked by Marsha W from Hidden Hills
- Oct 10, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerHow it work is their guarantee covers up to $1000, now in order to get that you must wait 60 days because the lo-jack team will make the attempt to contact your laptop via the internet like it is suppose to. Now if they are unsuccessful then you will get a credit for your laptop based on the specs it has on the inside of it. So if your laptop is old then you might not necessarily get the full $1000.
But a little fun fact: 8 out of every 10 windows laptops are recovered, and 9 out of every 10 macs are recovered so your odds are pretty good that you will get it back. Hope this answers your question :)- Answered by Scott R from Batavia

What happens if your laptop is stolen abroad? Does LoJack work internationally?
- Asked by Tara T from New York
- Nov 11, 2009

Best AnswerYes it does work internationally. As long as the laptop connects to the internet, they are able to track and locate it anywhere in the world. In some countries, their success rate for recovery is higher than others because the law enforcement there is more cooperative.

Best AnswerYes, you can. Any Intel-based Mac or most PC's can be protected with LoJack. It works by tracing the computer when it connects to the internet, and invariably it would considering all new iMacs have wireless capability built in.

Does this LoJack system work in India?
- Asked by Shaheed K from Mumbai
- Jan 26, 2010
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes. The LoJack product works anywhere in the world that there is an internet connection. This means that your Mac will be able to contact the monitoring center using an internet connection from India, and should you choose to activation the Data Delete service, that will work in India as well. While the company does not currently sell LoJack in India, they have recovered stolen computers from India as well as of 50 other countries around the world.

- Asked by Les W from Shelby Township
- Dec 25, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes it does work in the U.K. and the rest of western Europe. The company has offices in the UK and most importantly they have recovery officers across Europe. These recovery officers have relationships with law enforcement in these countries and that is how they are able to recover stolen computers there.

On the Mac is Lo Jack just a piece of installed software that can be removed by being deleted or is it rooted into the OS?
- Asked by Meta F from Flushing
- Nov 3, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerSome laptops have LoJack installed in the BIOS meaning that even taking out the old hard drive and putting in a new one wouldn't delete the software. However, Apple's do not have that feature and therefore this software is just that, software.
To take a precaution however, the software automatically creates a partition for itself to avoid being deleted in a OS reinstall. So a basic reformat will not delete the software. A hard drive swap would however.- Answered by Danny P from Orlando
