Will installing Microsoft Office for Mac on my iMac make it vulnerable to viruses??
- Asked by FM from Palm Desert

Best Answer
Yes and No.
The Mac Operating System will not be vulnerable.
Your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents will be very vulnerable. A virus that infects Microsoft Office documents on a Mac could prevent printing and could cause trouble with sending emails that involve infected documents. You could easily get infected and spread the virus to any Windows user.- Answered by PS from Raleigh

Yes, the standard (Box Edition) of H&S 2008 allows you to install it legally on upto 3 machines - i.e. it's a three user licence included in the one box.
It's designed in effect as a family pack, that can be used by Mum, Dad and a child/student.- Answered by RL from Wokingham

Nothing technical because it will install and run but using this for a business or a non-profit is wrong since it violates the End User License Agreement with Microsoft.
A quote from the EULA says "Limitations on Use. The software is not licensed for use in any commercial, non-profit or revenue-generating
business activities."- Answered by PS from Raleigh

You can install it on your mac, but you will need to use Bootcamp (already on your mac) to install a version of windows on your mac first. You can then install and run any windows software and run it from within windows running on your mac.

What is the difference between the MS office standard edition and the home/student edition?
I need the "office" program for a class in school. I would like to know the difference in both versions before I make my purchase.

Key difference is that the Business Edition (which replaced Standard Edition on Sept 16th 2009) includes full support for Microsoft Exchange (to a level beyond that built into Snow Leopard)
If your college uses Exchange as it's mail and calander/class booking system, then Business Edition is a good choice - and includes a special version of Entourage (EWS) offering excellent support for Exchange.
If you only need Excel, Word, PowerPoint then the H&S edition is fine - and all three programs are full versions - with no difference in function or capability to those in BE.
Hope that helps. Both offer excellent compatability with Windows Office documents.- Answered by RL from Wokingham

If I want to install Office for Mac, do I need to also install Bootcamp or Parralles?
All my work partners are in MS Office - I have a MACBook Pro. The MAC rep suggested I try Parallels then installing Windows XP, then Outlook - I got as far as the Parrallels and XP but (for me) it was to cumbersome. So I un-installed all of it and looked up Bootcamp.
I need to work in Outlook and Word - so If I get Office for MAC do I need to use Bootcamp or Parralles in order to make it all work?
Thanks for the help.- Asked by EE

"Office for Mac" is Mac software, not Windows software, so no, you don't need Bootcamp/Parallels/Fusion.
I use a Mac while 99% of my clients use Windows-based PCs. I share Word/Excel/Powerpoint files with them without any trouble.
There is no Outlook in Office for Mac, the equivalent program is Entourage, but this shouldn't matter to you at work.- Answered by PE from Mississauga

what is the difference between bootcamp, Parallel and vmfusion?
I am ordering for a new Macbook Pro. I am confused regarding the problem of sharing files. Most of
my friends and the establishments around use Microsoft products. So I was thinking of ordering for
parallel, but after reading some of the reviews I am confused as to what I should opt for. Does the boot
camp come installed in the new Mac? And what should I opt for - the Parallel desktop or the VmFusion
So the question.- Asked by MG

iWork is a set of programs for the Mac, from Apple. "Mac" is a computer that runs iWork.
If you meant, what's the difference between iWork and Microsoft Office, each is a suite of programs.
For example, Office has Word for word-processing, while iWork has Pages.
Office uses Excel for a spreadsheet; iWork has Numbers.
Office uses PowerPoint for presentations; iWork has Keynote.
Office has a few other gizmos such as Entourage that some people like. Apple has others such as Mail that are free.
More people use Office than use iWork. However, all the iWork applications can read the corresponding Office documents and save in their formats. This does not mean that they are completely "the same." Formats change somewhat translating between the programs, but this may not matter a lot unless you're doing detailed layout.
Many of us in the Mac world prefer Pages to Word for all sorts of reasons. Your experience may vary.- Answered by TE from OAKLAND

TextEdit.app is included with all Macs like notepad is to Windows, except TextEdit is a full featured word processor that is fully compatible with all current Microsoft Word file formats.
You will not need MS Word. TextEdit.app will serve you just fine to create, edit, and save documents to be opened on both Macs and PC's.- Answered by MO from Las Vegas

We bought a MacBook with Office last year for my daughter in college. Can I install her Office on the new MB Pro I just ordered?
I read somewhere it can be installed on up to 3 computers. Also, if we can, can it be downloaded or do we need to find the original cd's?

Yes it is valid for 3 computers, but you will need the original package, as it has the three license codes in it. There is no way to download it from the internet.
If you simply don't have the box anymore, I would call MS support, they may be able to give you two new codes based on the one you have on your daughters computer. Contrary to popular belief, their support staff are pretty helpful- Answered by BR from Webster

no.
iWork is able to open, edit, format, and save in all current and previous MS Office formats: .doc, .docx, .xls, .ppt
in addition, TextEdit.app, which comes with every Mac, is able to open, edit, format, and save in all Word document formats if you just need basic word processing: .doc, .xml, .docx (office 97, word 2003, word 2007, respectively)- Answered by MO from Las Vegas

Apple's iWork suite comes with three productivity solutions, pages (like Microsoft word), numbers (like excell) and keynote, which is a powerful PowerPoint creation software.
In my opinion, keynote is not only easier to use, but provides nicer options to make your presentation great. And it only costs $41 with the education discount! I would highly recommend it!- Answered by AB from Moon Township
