I tried it with M-Class Command APS 50 (Edition 2009) with Multimedia-Kit for IPOD with the 30 PIN cable + lighning adapter and the ipod touch 5g wasn't recognized.

Unless it contains a DAC, can we assume this "All digital" interface probably doesn't provide analog audio out either?

I does contain a DAC, and supports analog audio out. Same as the Line Out in the 30 pin connector.

Answer
All original Apple Chargers come without charging cables. So if you have an old but "original" Apple charger that definitely has an USB type output port, you can use either the old 30-pin docking type cable (other end is USB) or the new Lightning cable (other end is USB) with the aforementioned original Apple chargers. What counts is the power rating of the charger versus the Apple hardware you want to charge. However some new Apple models (such as iPhone 5, iPod Touch/5G, iPod Nano/7G, iPad Mini and iPad 4th Generation) carry the new Lightning connector and you definitely need to use an original Apple cable (USB to Lightning) bcz. this is a "chipped" cable and ordinary 3rd party cables mostly will (should) not work!... This Lightning to 30-pin Adapter is also "chipped", so you can connect either an original Apple (USB to 30-pin) cable, or some other 3rd party (OEM) USB to 30-pin cable, or say a charger having a fixed cable (with he 30-pin socket at the output) to this adapter to charge your iPad Mini. No sweat!...

Will this cable work with a new iPhone5 and my old 30 pin composite video cable? I use that to play movies for the kids in the car, so what am I suppose to do to play movies from my phone if the adapter doesn't do video out and there's no lighting composite cable available?

Does anyone know what accessory or adapter I can use to play my Nano 7g in my car? My Hyundai comes with the IPOD connector but for the 30 pin.
I'm trying to play my ipod in my car. The 30-pin adapter only charges it but won't play the music. Does anyone know of any accessory that will play music too and not just charge it?

Yes it does. I am using the 30 adapter to connect my Strat to my iPad 4. Works with GarageBand and Jamup Pro XT. If you are connecting your iPad output to an amp or headphones, connect them up first before selecting the app. Inserting them when the apps are running causes the output to be muted...it does on my iPad.

You will not need it. But you might want it in case you have a lot of older iphone cables, an old dock or in case your car only accepts the older 30 pin.
