Can I use this cable to hook up Time Capsule to my new Macbook Pro with retina display so I can get all files across?
I am waiting for my new Macbook Pro with retina display to arrive. To hook up the time capsule to restore a hard drive on my last Macbook Pro (six years old and still going strong!!) I used an ethernet cable. I am just wondering what to use now?

Can the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter be used simultaneously with the Mini DP to VGA adapter?
- Asked by Andrew H from San Jose
- Jun 11, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerTo use this Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter simultaneously with a video adapter such as the MiniDisplayport to VGA Adapter, you would need either two built-in Thunderbolt ports, such as the new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, or a Thunderbolt hub, or another external device that has more than two Thunderbolt ports that you could use as a hub.

Will this work with older Thuderbolt equipped machines?

AnswerYes, this adapter will work with any Mac with a Thunderbolt port. Be careful not to mistake the MiniDisplayPort on Macs from a couple years ago with the Tunderbolt port, as the MiniDisplayPort is not compatible with this product.

Is it worth me connecting this adapter to my (unused) thunderbolt port on my current iMac to give me better speeds over my Cat6 Ethernet cable?
- Asked by Brad S from Mulgrave
- Jun 20, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerYour current iMac should already have gigabit Ethernet installed in it. So using this Gigabit Thunderbolt adapter shouldn't increase your speed since both are still using Gigabit Ethernet. Based on reviews from other sites it might actually be slightly slower than the built in Ethernet and use more CPU power.

Can I use this to connect an (old) iMac via its ethernet port to an external thunderbolt hard drive?
- Asked by Andrew M

Best AnswerNo you can't do that. The adaptor is designed to be used the other way around as it doesn't convert the signal but instead passes it on the the PCI controller to do. There currently isn't any way that i know of to connect a thunderbolt accessory to a non thunderbolt mac.

Can I use this cable to hook up a Time Capsule to my iMac?
I have a new iMac with a 2 Tb internal drive. I wish to now buy a Time Capsule, would this be a good way of connection to give me faster bandwidth on my iMac?
- Asked by Gillian K from Maryborough

AnswerThis adapter is not necessary to connect your iMac to your Time Capsule for internet access and for your Time Machine backups. Time Capsule and iMac can be connected via Wifi. In almost all cases, though, using this adapter with a decent ethernet cable (I recommend at least a Cat 5e ethernet cable) connected hard-wired to your Time Capsule will not only improve your internet speed on your iMac, but also your Time Machine backup speed. The actual improvement in speed of these things will depend on your current internet speed and distance between the iMac and Time Capsule along with other possible interferences. In most cases, though, I would say the average user would notice a slight increase in performance, and the power user to notice a significant performance increase.
If you deal with backup up many large files and are a heavy-bandwidth user, I woul definitely recommend using this adapter with either a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable.- Answered by Jeffrey Y from Westmont

Can this be used to connect a Thunderbolt External HDD to a Gigabit Ethernet Network? Thanks Much!
- Asked by Brian M from Goodyear

AnswerProbably not.
Most Thunderbolt Ext HDD don't have much processing power and just respond to calls from your computer to store data or send data.
There's no support for NAS (network attached storage) built-in to existing Thunderbolt Ext HDDs.- Answered by Chris S from San Jose

AnswerOnce Apple updates and re-releases the Thunderbolt driver for the gigabit adapter, it will be a supported ethernet interface on the Mac and will support passing that through to Parallels and VMs hosted there.

Can I plug in another computer in the thunderbolt ethernet adapter? Ex, can I plug in a Blue Ray player with internet in the adapter?
Use it like an extra internet connection.

Best AnswerProbably.
But, an ethernet hub would be far more practical. (an extra 4 or 8 ports without keeping your computer powered up to route enet to a blue ray player)- Answered by Chris S from San Jose

Does the new Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter support Wake-on-LAN?
And if so does it matter if the computer's just asleep or fully powered off?
- Asked by Blake C from Port Huron
- Jun 20, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerIt should support "Wake for Ethernet network access" as long as it was configured and active before you put the computer to sleep.
"Wake for Ethernet network access" only works if the computer is asleep which is actually a super low power mode in which the CPU can watch for incoming network activity.
If you shutdown the computer, there is no way incoming network traffic will wake it. (the CPU is totally off; no network monitoring possible)- Answered by Chris S from San Jose

Can Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter be downstream connected to any Thunderbolt peripheral so Ethernet is available on connect to Thunderbolt accessory
This would allow a simple dock configuration. Use WiFi while in the field but connect to Thunderbolt Display or peripheral and get direct Ethernet wired connection. This would save the second Thunderbolt port for other hardware connections such as Pro Video edit/control equipment. If such a connection would work with the adapter it would be nice to be able to control it with granularity.

Does this allow the user to take full advantage of thunderbolt's speed?
- Asked by Steven K from New York
- Jun 11, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerThunderbolt speeds are up to 10 Gigabits per second, whereas Gigabit Ethernet is 1 Gigabit per second. Therefore, this adapter doesn't take full advantage of Thunderbolt's speed, but it is definitely faster than the Apple USB to Ethernet Adapter, because not only is USB rated at only up to 480 Megabits per second (under half 1 Gigabit), but it is also a 10/100 adapter instead of this 10/100/1000 adapter.
If you do not have a built-in Gigabit ethernet port on your Mac, such as the newer MacBook Air's and the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and you wish to have ethernet connection, I would highly recommend this product over other ethernet adapters because in most cases it will have better transfer speeds because of the use of Thunderbolt.- Answered by Jeffrey Y from Westmont
