Is this a new HDMI AV Adapter ?
Previously I have also purchased a HDMI AV Adapter from Apple. Is there any difference ?

Yes this is a new adapter. The difference from the previous version is that you will not see an incompatibility message on the new iPad when inserting the adapter. Using the older adapter with the new iPad (3rd generation) requires acknowledging the incompatibilty message after which it functions properly.

Does this output a mirror image of the iPad screen or just certain apps?

Best Answer
As long as it's the iPad 2 or the new iPad (3) then it would mirror the whole screen, so for example, you'd be able to see the background wallpaper and the app icons.

My projector is mounted on the roof, does that mean I have to hold the ipad 2inches from the projector unless I use a HDMI cable to extend it?

Answer
Yes. The Apple Digital AV Adapter is not intended to connect directly to any device. First of all the HDMI output is female which means that you realy need to use a HDMI extension cable to connect to your device not careing if it is in the roof or the floor.

This adapter is listed as new in March 2012 but does not functionally sound different from the previous model.

Answer
The new version of the Apple Digital AV Adapter (Part Number MD098ZM/A) differs from the previous version in the following ways:
1) Smaller multi-pin connector to the iPhone / iPad
2) Connector is retained by a locking mechanism, so the plug cannot fall out of the base of the iPhone, or the iPad. I found this to be an issue with the previous version of this cable.
3) Device requires a firmware update. At the time of writing, Version 5.1 for iPhone 4S has just been released. I discovered that this update was required in order to make this cable work. I became aware of this due to the 'Device requires a Firmware Update' warning that I received when connecting the new cable.
4) Cable is supplied in a small box, rather than a clear plastic packet.
I actually bought the previous version from a well-known online store, saw that the part number was different, and returned it when I saw this new version on the Apple Store. At the time of writing, no other outlets seem to carry this accessory. However, I consider that it's worth the extra £6 (I paid £35 including delivery), simply for the secure locking mechanism that prevents the cable from being accidentally pulled out of the iPhone or iPad. For me, this was a big problem with the previous version of this adapter.
I have not yet tested the item in detail, however intial tests have proven that the device works well for BBC iPlayer, plus other apps including a CD+G Karaoke player that I use.
Although expensive for what it is, the Apple Digital AV Adapter provides an industry-standard HDMI socket, which carries a clean and sharp 720p Digital Video output. Great accessory for those with an iPhone 4S or iPad.

No. Apple TV offers AirPlay, which allows you to wireless stream pictures, video, and music from your iPad/iPhone to your tv. The AV adapter requires an hdmi cable connection between your ios device and the tv.

What is the difference between composite cable, VGA adapter and Apple Digital AV Adapter? I just want to display movies eg in iTunes on my iPad via TV
I am not sure of the difference between all these cables - I just want to show a movie I have bought eg on iTunes and downloaded to my iPad 1 on my quite ordinary TV. I have a composite cable and it works in conjunction with the cable supplied with the TV. But I see there is also a VGA slot on the TV so I wonder if the VGA adaptor would work ok in the same way - and then I also see there is the Apple digital AV adapter. What does that do? Would it achieve the same purpose? It certainly looks more portable!

Answer
This adaptor will support higher resolution video. It also supports HDCP. The other adaptors do not and some copy protected video content will not play on external screens or TV's if HDCP is not supported.
