Airport vs. Time Capsule
Is the Time Capsule the same as an Airport (except for the obvious storage advantage)??? And if so, are they exactly as good as eachother??
Can I have a Time Capsule without an Airport??
I want to know because if I can have the Time Capsule as a wireless router as well as an external harddrive then Ill buy one, instead of both!- Asked by Bryce A from Albury

Time Capsule has an inbuilt wireless router. If you choose to buy one, then you will not need an airport express.

Can the Time Capsule share the Internet connection from a cable modem (plugged into TC's WAN port) to other computers via Ethernet?
In other words: can I setup TC as an Internet Sharing device for the rest of the network via Ethernet? (similar to what Windows Internet Connection Sharing does)
My cable modem would plug in to the TC WAN port and I'm hoping I can set the TC up so it shares the cable modem's Internet connection to the rest of the network. The purpose being that I don't have a router (the cable modem has no router capability) and thus far I had to use a computer running 24/7 to share the internet connection.- Asked by Steffen I

Best Answer
Yes. Thats probably the easiest way as there is no duplication of functionality. Your cable modem just handles the internet connection and the Time Capsule does things like NAT and DHCP server to "share" the connection. These are things that all-in-one "routers" do. Remember the Time Capsule is also a Router, thats what the LAN ports are. I have a similar set-up, in my case an ADSL modem rather than a cable modem. That then serves 4 computers wired and wireless. Have a browse of the set-up guide (online) before you buy.

I currently use an Airport Extreme, if I get one of these , how will this fit in to my network? Can I use the AE to extend the wireless network ?
iMac 24 patched direct to Airport Extreme, Aiport Express on 1st floor, used to extend network - how best to add a Time Capsule to this wireless setup. For example, could the TC be used as the primary wireless router with the AE used to extend the network (in addition to the Express!!)?

Best Answer
Yes, using the Airport supported WDS technology you can extend your network. Think of the Time Capsule as an Airport Extreme with an internal hard drive. You have all of the same base capabilities, plus TimeMachine back-up and a Network Attached Storage device.
In your current configuration, you could swap out your existing Airport Extreme for a new TimeCapsule and exploit the speed advantage of the direct ethernet connection, while gaining the daul-band support, greater speed and range, as well as the guest account feature your earlier Airport Extreme likely does not have. The greater range may actually improve the performance of your current Airport Express in its present position or permit you to move it further away and extend your network. You could also use your existing Airport Express to extend your network even further if you use all three devices.- Answered by Steve G from Aptos

Can I use Time Capsule to stream iTunes videos to my MacBook Pro which is connected to my LCD television?
I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro and I connect the laptop to the TV to watch my iTunes movies and TV shows but many of them are on my iMac so I stream them through home sharing to my laptop. An Airport Express provides the network and the internet. With HD shows though i often find it lagging and skipping. So i want to use the Time Capsule to store all my itunes videos and stream them to whatever i want to watch them on. Possible?

Best Answer
Yes, but your lagging will continue (nothing will change) as long as any part of the pathway is wifi. Time Capsule does not do anything different than the Airport Express, except hold data either on its internal HD or one attached via USB.
If you use the built-in gigabit ethernet switch on the Time Capsule to both connect (via Cat 5 or better wire,) the MacBook Pro and the iMac, then you could avoid the skips and lag.
If you only want to watch video on your TV, then the new Apple TV is the better device. It can (wifi) stream from either the content on your MacBook Pro or iMac. The difference is caching the data so no skips occur.- Answered by Harold Z from Honolulu

Does the time capsule supports QoS?
I've seen some posts saying that it doesn't support it but they were kind of old. So I wanted to have an official response on this.

Can the time capsule work as JUST an external hard drive that i can move files to for storage?

Yes. The Time Machine back-up function software is not necessary to use a Time Capsule - it can be used as an external hard drive. Many users are doing just that.

Best Answer
If you are looking for the TC to store music and you play them on different devices, no.
If you are looking to plug speakers into it and stream/play music, no.
If you are looking to wirelessly have your computer's library connected and play same library through a different device (variety of supported speakers, iOS devices, other computers via homesharing, speakers plugged into airport express), yes.- Answered by Albert C from Modesto

Time Capsule for Macbook Air as External Harddrive
So i was wondering if i got an Time capsule for my Macbook air if it would work as an external hard drive? Would it work wirelessly as well? I also own an iMac, ipad, would these devices be able to access files on the Time Capsule?
Thank you very much for any help.- Asked by Steffen S from Canmore

The hard drive on Time Capsule can act as an external hard drive (over both the wired and wireless networks) for any Mac OS X devices on your network. iOS devices (ie iPad/iPhone) don't have that capability.

Can TC be set up to not use DHCP and to connect to ethernet via a LAN instead of the WAN port? If so, how?
My daughter's dorm at college has some very fussy requirements and they provide instructions for setting up some wireless routers but not Apple wifi products.
"Your router must have its DHCP server completely disabled.
You should connect an ethernet cable from wall jack directly into one of the numbered jacks on the back of the router, NOT the WAN port."
In the airport utility setup I see I can switch DHCP to manual, but don't see how to turn it off.
When I accidentally hooked the ethernet to a LAN port it didn't work.
Help!- Asked by Edwin S from Montrose

Best Answer
Yes...
Using airport utility...
1. Select Manual Setup at the opening screen.
2. Select Internet (icon at the top of the window) and Internet Connection tab
3. Connect Using - select Ethernet
4. Connect Sharing - select Off (Bridge Mode)
This will turn off DHCP and use the networks DHCP server to allocate you an IP address automatically.
I'm using my Belkin modem/router as my DHCP server so I've set up my AE in just this manner. Simply plug an ethernet cable into the WAN socket and into the network socket in the room...

I have an Apple TV 2. I am looking to purchase a Time Capsule. Can I stream movies stored on TC to Apple TV without the use of a computer?
Also, I am looking for a solution that will NOT require the use of any "jailbreaking" or any other such method. I am looking for a process that will make this possible using only the options that come with the products.
Thank you all for any help that I can receive.- Asked by Dennis H from Killeen

Best Answer
You can only stream to Apple TV 2 from an iTunes library that is on the same Home Share as your ATV. If you have used your Time Capsule disk as a storage drive for iTunes movies then you will be able to do what you are looking for, but you can't stream unless the computer that runs the iTunes library is on.

If i delete something on my computer, will it delete on the time capsule?
So if I have a file in my computer and then time machine syncs this file as a backup, so if I delete this file on my computer will it be deleted on time capsule??
- Asked by Antonio S from Bogotá
- Jan 5, 2011
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
Time Capsule, assuming it is configured to back up your Mac, will keep any deleted files/folders until it runs out of space, at which time it will delete the oldest backup first. So your deleted file/folder will remain on Time Capsule until that backup becomes the oldest and Time Capsule needs to free up space.

Can TimeCapsule be put into bridge mode? Can I avoid a double NAT? My router or PIX will NAT the clients; Can I bridge the connection?
I have a DSL modem which can of course attach to this. Is it only capable of acting as a router or can it be put into bridge mode so I can put my Cisco PIX behind the DSL modem. In this way currently the PIX assigns a DHCP address to attached clients. Nothing is mentioned about this device having firewall capabilities and I require them.
- Asked by David S from College Park

Best Answer
Yes, very easily. Just go into the manual setup and you will see bridge mode. You can also turn off NAT and the DHCP server so that all the router in the Time Capsule transparently passes everything through. At the same time you can use the wireless capabilities. I have an older model of TC which provides only one wireless network so I have my DSL router do the 802.11g network for devices like the iPhone, and the TC does the 5GHz 802.11n network for my MacBook Air and iMac.
