Best AnswerYou can use your time capsule in addition to your Sky router but not instead of it. SImply attach the time capsule with an ethernet cable and then use the setup utility to setup the time capsule as a wireless router for your house. You can then choose to either join the Sky router or the Apple router for your internet connection. Using the Time Capsule gives you access to faster N wireless speeds that most Sky routers don't use yet.

to get the BEST possible wireless signal should the time capsule be mounted horizontally or vertically
- Asked by Billy G from Elk Grove

Best AnswerHi,
The Time Capsule is designed only to be mounted horizontally. As such, the antennae are multi-directional and integrated in the device, meaning it provides the same signal in all directions. If you still have signal issues, then more realistic solutions such as purchasing Airport Express base stations to extend the range of the network produced by the time capsule would be better in the long term.- Answered by Justin D from Londonderry

Yes, assuming that you mean Time Machine (and not Time Capsule), it supports NFS but with some work. There are quite some descriptions available that describe how to prepare a Linux server to do so, Google for "Time Machine nfs share". The key ingredient is to mount the disk holding the Time Machine backup with the "user_xattr" option (on the Linux server, not on the Mac).
However, if you're using an Linux server as a Time Machine backup disk, it is a lot easier to install the netatalk package and configure it to support Time Machine, just Google for "netatalk Time Machine". In that way your Linux server will speak the Mac native AFP protocol.
Now, if you meant "Does Time Capsule support NFS", the answer is no, unfortunately not. Time Capsule only supports the AFP and SMB/CIFS network disk protocols, not NFS.- Answered by J A K M

Can the time capsule be used with the Sonos music streaming system and if so how?
I have my music collection in ituunes on my iMac. I am thinking of buying a Sonos music system and wish to use it in connection with a 2TB time capsule acting as the always on server. I will transfer the itunes library to the TC. Is this possible and if so how.

Best AnswerHi DM
A quick but incomplete answer is a clear "yes". We have the Sonos system in 6 rooms running the music off of a TC 2 GB with no problems at all. Only 2 issues is/was giving Sonos the right path to the TC due to the syntax. That took help from Sonos' efficient support. But after that it just works.
The only thing being a pain is the fact that iTunes keeps forgetting the path to the TC. this means that everything we buy from via iTunes need to be transferred to the TC manually (that was actually what I came in here to look for a solution for...).
So I can warmly recommend the combination.- Answered by Preben Bitsch C from Salem

Has anyone used this with a BT Homehub - and does it work?
- Asked by Christopher B
- Oct 9, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes it does. I've connected the home hub with the time capsule with ethernet cable, then disabled the wireless signal coming from the hub. Time capsule has a better wifi than the BT Hub. When setting up the Capsule you must bridge the connection in one of the auto setup menus with the BT hub.

Can I achieve the same functionality with an Airport Extreme and a USB HD?
- Asked by Matthew B from Salt Lake City
- Mar 25, 2010
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes. Time Capsule is simpler to set up, but you can connect an external USB drive to an AE, format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled, and then use the Airport Utility to designate the disk as a shared disk under the Airport Utility. Make sure you use "Secure Shared Disks" with accounts and use strong passwords to protect each disk. Then login to the disk through your Finder (entering the user name and password that you created) and then go to the Time Machine settings. Time Machine will recognize the usb drive connected to the AE as a acceptable drive (blue), select it as your Time Machine backup drive and it will start. Make sure you have at least 3x as much space for your TM drive (500GB computer -> 1.5 TB Time Machine drive) so that Time Machine will have enough room to make incremental backups.

Can I back up the contents of the Time Capsule to an external hard drive for further data security?
I like to back up my back up drive on an external HD and store offsite. Will Time Capsule backup to an external HD. It doesnt have to be a Time Machine type backup just the files on the Time Capsule including the .macbackup file that Time Machine creates.

Best AnswerYes, you can copy (clone) the Time Machine contents of the Time Capsule to an external hard drive.
Just be aware that cloning any backup is not as reliable (error-free) as cloning the original data.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

can I connect two time capsules
I have two 1 TB time capsules. How can I connect them together or how can I use the second unit to expand my network? I currently have 7 Apple computers on the network and a PS-3, in the basement, where the signal from the wireless network is the weakest.

Does TC work like Airport Express?
Meaning that:
1> When setup in Bridge Mode it connects wirelessly to my current WAP (Wireless Access Point), and will it also be a WiFi repeater?
2 > The Ethernet Ports work as a switch so when other devices are plugged in, they too will wirelessly connect to my home network?
3> The USB Port can be used to connect as a network printer (with Bonjour)?
4> And by doing all of the above it can hopefully still be used by my MAC's to do wireless Time Machine backups?- Asked by Jerry H from Lake Mary

Best AnswerNo, Time Capsule does not work like AirPort Express. However, it does work like an AirPort Extreme due to the fact that an AirPort Extreme is included in the case as part of a Time Capsule. It will do everything you have asked. It will extend a non-Apple wireless network, but it does not stream music.

will time capsule work with windows 7?
- Asked by Stewart J from Niceville
- Nov 13, 2009

Best AnswerYes, it does. You just have to install the airport drivers with the CD-ROM for it to work properly. I have used my time capsule for a year now as a server drive for people using OS X, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. All platforms work just fine. The only modern OS that I am aware of that doesn't function properly with it is Linux; but if you're tech savvy enough I'm sure there's even a way to do that.

Why a Mac Time Capsule? Can't I just use Time Machine to back up to ANY external HD?
Isn't a Time Capsule just an overpriced external HD? What does it do that a LaCie 1 TB drive doesn't?
- Asked by David G from Petty Harbour

Best AnswerYou can use any external HD to backup with Time Machine. But the Time Capsule is a router with a hard drive built in. This allows you to create a wireless network, and backup with Time Machine wirelessly. And multiple computers can use the hard drive from all over your network to perform backups with Time Machine. And you can also attach a printer to the router as well to print wirelessly through your network. Basically, Time Capsule is just an Airport Extreme with an included hard drive.

two macs, one time capsule?
I have two macBooks, want to maintain separate disk images for each machine through my Time Capsule, can I do it and how?
or should I even bother since I built my new MacBook Pro off the disk image of my old MacBook and it worked great, if the new machine crashes I'll have an image and can restore to the old machine, and if the old machine craters I'll have the image from the new one to restore to another new machine?

Best AnswerYou can certainly use Time Capsule for Time Machine back ups from two or more Macs, space being the only limiting factor. Time Capsule stores your back ups as Sparse Images, one for each machine. These images can be used to restore/rebuild your Mac, although they are not bootable.
The main difference with this solution and your dual machine swappable images is that Time Machine back ups will be up to date with the latest data, apps etc.
Belt and braces is always a good idea with back ups so a clean start image would be handy to have as well. You could use this and then use Migration assistant to pull selective data from your Time Machine back ups.- Answered by Nigel M

AnswerTime Capsule has no user-accessible memory, but has storage capacity. You can use a powered USB hub to connect additional external hard drives. If desired, one or more of such drives could then be used as a destination drive for Time Machine.

Do I have to format the TC's hard drive like I would a standard external if I want some space for Time Machine and some space for data?
I'd like to use it for both - a TM back-up as well as a shared iPhoto Library, shared iTunes, etc. How difficult is this? Do I have to allocate the space myself or will the TC do it for me?

Best AnswerNo, you do not have to partition or format the Time Capsule's hard drive to use it for storage or Time Machine. The Time Capsule is some what like a mini computer that is sharing it's hard drive, Your computers (both Mac and PC) can access the drive using Apple's Bonjour networking technologies. The Time Machine backup system houses your data in a chronological folder structure. You can use the Time Capsule's hard drive for either or both, just keep in mind that the more space you use up on the hard drive the less space Time Machine has to use for backup's.

Is there a bare metal type recovery with Time Machine+TimeCapsule so I can completely recover a lost disk drive?
With some backup technologies you have a bootable CD that you can boot with and then do a complete recovery (Windows Home Server has this for PC's, for instance). Can I do that or similar with Time Machine and Time Capsule?

AnswerYou can use a Mac OS X installation disk (Leopard and up if I'm not mistaken) and use the Time Machine restore at boot time to restore the settings from a previous Mac.
Mac OS will detect your TC and restore your hard-drive as per the TC image. I've done this once as a life-saver. It was slow (using gigabit Ethernet) but that's because my TC is the first model which is painfully slow. Nevertheless, I was up and running in hours, and the peace of mind of having my entire system and settings restored to perfection is priceless.- Answered by Ricardo S
