  • Data Transfer Speed Rates?

Right now i am running a AE dual band and have a 2TB external hooked up to it. As it stands my data transfer rates (as recorded with menu meters) across the wireless are on as follows

    Download 4.0-8.4 MB/S
    Upload 3.0-5.6 MB/S

What are the expected and average actual data transfer rates for the TC? I would imagine a partial increase due to the fact that all data no longer has to be transferred through a USB 2.0 cable first.

    Best Answer

If you use the TC as the base station that creates the network, you get 15-20MB/sec transfer rate to disk. (That assumes good signal strength.)

If you use the TC as client to join an existing wireless network, you get only 0.5-1MB/sec. According to Apple support, "A TC is not meant to be used as a client that joins an existing network."

  • Time Capsule as an External Hard Drive + Ethernet Cable question

In reading up on the Time Capsule, it can be used as a router and for storage purposes.

    Some questions:
    1) can the Time Capsule be used just as an external hard drive, not for back up purposes at all? Is there a setting that needs to be checked to make sure that it doesnt back up anything at all.

    2) can I move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via an ethernet cable for faster speeds? Do I need a special ethernet cable?

    3) can I also move files from a macbook or pc to the time capsule via wifi if I want, just wondering if it is possible?

    Best Answer

Time capsule works fine as an external hard drive, no problems. When your Mac asks if you would like to use time capsule for time machine select "no".

If you connect via a cable, things are faster and you can transfer data to the Time capsule no problem.

If you switch your Mac to WIFI you can connect to a Time Capsule and move files to the TC hard drive just like normal.

You can not use multiple disks to enlarge the size of even a single designated Time Machine backup. (The thing about Time Machine is that it will eventually fill up any disk you choose as the backup disk, no matter how large a disk you choose - as the amount of space that will be used is simply a function of time.)

You can, however, add an even larger USB external hard drive to your Time Capsule and switch your entire designated Time Machine backup disk to it instead of continuing to use the smaller disk that you've been using. Once the switch is completed, you could re-purpose the original (smaller) disk to a new task, such as backing up another (hopefully smaller) Mac.

Or, if you've been backing up multiple Macs to a single Time Capsule disk, you can limit the number of Macs that are being backed up to each particular designated destination backup disk, so that each disk that is designated as a backup destination is always the proper 2.5 to 3 times as large as the total size of the Mac disks being backed up to it.

Remember, you can add multiple external USB hard drives by connecting a self-powered USB hub to a Time Capsule. This can give you the ability to backup multiple Macs by designating one specific backup destination of sufficient size for each Mac being backed up.

  • Can I have multiple Apple TV's accessing my iTunes library on my iMac, with all of the media stored on a Time Capsule?

I want to get a 2TB Time Capsule for movies, and then have 3 Apple TVs all streaming from it through my iMac.

    Best Answer

    Absolutely you can!

As long as your iTunes Music folder is on the Time Capsule, and you've told each of your iTunes libraries where the folder is, then you're ready to rock! Your Apple TVs will access the library files on your iMacs without knowing any different.

  • Time Capsule = Airport Extreme + Internal storage. Is this literally right?

My understanding is Time Capsule = Airport Extreme + Internal storage. Is this literally right?
If not, then what are exactly the differences?

    Best Answer

Yes, it is two units in one.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as an VPN Client

Is it possible to use the TimeCapsule as an VPN Client, so that every device connected to Time Capsule is automatically connected to the VPN.
I usually use a VPN Client software on my Mac or iPhone to connect to the VPN Network of the University i work for from home. My question is if the TimeCapsule can establish such a connection my itself, so that all devices I connect to the TimeCapsule are connected to the VPN automatically.

    Best Answer

NO, you can't do it. You can just connect an aditional ethernet router with VPN to Capsule.

  • Answer

    Yes

do a google search. I found a site with the following title nearly straight away:
"How To: Stream Video to iPad From Network Drive Without a Computer"

I can't paste the URL here but it definately works.

  • Can Time Machine back up both the Boot Camp partition and the Mac partition at the same time? (i.e., everything that is on my iMac).

    Uh Oh...
I just realised that it probably won't because the Boot Camp partition looks like a separate drive on my desktop. Bummer! So how can I back up both the iMac and Windows partitions to my Time Capsule??

    Best Answer

Well actually you can do this.
Simply make an image of the BootCamp partition on your Mac drive using WinClone . This will be a boot-able image of the BootCamp drive that can be restored in a few minutes.
Then backup the whole Mac drive with Time Machine.

  • Can TC be set up to not use DHCP and to connect to ethernet via a LAN instead of the WAN port? If so, how?

My daughter's dorm at college has some very fussy requirements and they provide instructions for setting up some wireless routers but not Apple wifi products.

"Your router must have its DHCP server completely disabled.
You should connect an ethernet cable from wall jack directly into one of the numbered jacks on the back of the router, NOT the WAN port."

In the airport utility setup I see I can switch DHCP to manual, but don't see how to turn it off.

When I accidentally hooked the ethernet to a LAN port it didn't work.

    Help!

    Best Answer

    Yes...

    Using airport utility...

    1. Select Manual Setup at the opening screen.
    2. Select Internet (icon at the top of the window) and Internet Connection tab
    3. Connect Using - select Ethernet
    4. Connect Sharing - select Off (Bridge Mode)

This will turn off DHCP and use the networks DHCP server to allocate you an IP address automatically.

I'm using my Belkin modem/router as my DHCP server so I've set up my AE in just this manner. Simply plug an ethernet cable into the WAN socket and into the network socket in the room...

    Good luck!

  • Best Answer

    YES.

If you are using your wireless ability to backup your files you can set your time capsule to backup more than one system. It works like an airport extreme. It can link to 50 users and so all you need to do is find it in your wireless connections on both of your systems and type in the password you have set for it and it will backup both your macbook and your mac mini.

  • What do I have to disable in my wireless router modem for the TC to work as my wireless access point for my broadband?

I have a Netgear wireless modem router and this question section talks about disabling some aspects of these type of devices. This appears to be when you wish the TC to act as the access point and then have it connected using a wire to the Netgear device to the internet. What do I need to do or disable?

    Answer

There is very little different in having your Netgear continue to be your wireless access point and having the Time Capsule take that on unless your Netgear doesn't support current protocols and is slow. In any case all you'd need to do is turn off your wireless on your Netgear in the Admin settings and turn on the wireless on the Airport Extreme. If you don't know how to access the management interface for your Netgear router I'd recommend just connecting your Airport to your Netgear's ethernet ports and calling it even on the configuration.

  • How do I add more capacity to Apple TV???3 Macs and Apple TV/Time Machine and 1TB external - huge iTunes library.

Have a MacbookPro, Macbook and New 27" iMac all backed to Time Machine. I have Apple TV (160GB)but its nearly full!! MacBook Pro is additionally backed up to an external 1TB drive.
My iTunes library is extensive and spent about 3000pounds on it in 6 months!

1.Want to see if there is a way to add more disk drive storage to the Apple TV.
2.I cant work on my laptops as they are holding the iTunes libraries. Is there a way I can just leave the Music and Films on the Apple TV?
    3. Can I back up to the Time Machine wirelessly and use the rest of the Time Machine capacity to directly connect the Apple TV via Ethernet?

    Best Answer

I had the same issue and set up the 2TB Time Capsule as a Media Server, freed up space on my comp and Apple TV, and it made such a difference.

-Copy what you want from your iTunes Media Folder and save it onto the Time Capsule drive, then delete the originals from iTunes.

-Open iTunes Preferences, click Advanced, and uncheck where is says "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when Adding to Library" Then drag the files (now stored on the Time Capsule's HD) back into iTunes.

-MAKE SURE to RE-Check the 'copy files...." in preferences when you are done so future purchases and downloads still get organized to the iTunes Media folder on your comp

-I still sync my favorite stuff my Apple TV, but as long as itunes is open on your computer, this lets you stream your entire library, and also frees up space on the Apple TV.

    Hope this helps!

  • can I use a USB wireless internet access on this device to connect the network

trying to figure out what this TC can do.

My internet access is via the USB wireless internet to telstra next g

can this be used at the TC to connet the whole network???

No, The USB Port only supports sharing USB Hard Drives and USB Printers, not USB Modems. You can purchase 3G routers from various retailers that may support what you want to do.

  • Can Time Capsule back up a shared hard drive?

I want to know if Time Capsule can backup a wireless external hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme on the same network?

    Best Answer

No, Time Machine cannot back up FROM any network drives.

  • Best Answer

Yes. Time Machine creates separate backup files for each of your computers. These files will simply expand over time until your drive is full. Alternatively, you may wish to partition the drive using Disk Utility to allocate a specific amount of space for all or each of your computers.

  • Can I use 2 time capsules at once?

I have a 500GB time capsule that is full. I want to buy the 2tb one but would be glad to be able to use both for extra space. Does that work?

    Best Answer

Yes, you can connect multiple Time Capsules to the same network. If you will use Time Machine, you can't use both for backing up the same Mac, as you must choose one or the other.

  • Answer

It depends on if you are wanting it to backup your CD's or replace them.

    1. To backup CD's is not what it is made for, but it can backup CD's imported into iTunes.
    2. To replace them and 'stream' music from it then Apple TV is needed, but again this is not what Time Capsule is made for.

To put music on it 'rip' (import) the files to your computer using iTunes. You can then do one of 3 things:
    1. Backup your machine using any backup software selecting the Time Capsule as the destination and the iTunes folder as the source
    2. Use Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule
    3. Go into iTunes and put the root folder (Preferences / Advanced) onto the Time Capsule (note: to play any music on your computer you must be connected to the Time Capsule).

    Here is my setup:
Apple TV (1st gen) connected wirelessly to the TimeCapsule with my iTunes root folder on the TimeCapsule. When I open iTunes (on my Mac, although it could be on a PC) it syncs my media to the Apple TV. I can then play anything on the Apple TV and it streams around my house using 2 Airport Express boxes with speakers attached. I then use iDrive to backup everything online.

  • What is the difference between the Time Capsule and an external hard drive? I want to store photos externally to free up space on my Mac.

I am wanting to free up space on my Mac to help it perform tasks faster. Since I have over 10,000 photos on my MacBook hard drive, it seems to be slowing down. I have a Time Capsule, but should I also get an external hard drive to store all photos? I guess I don't understand the difference between the two. I was thinking I could then delete the photos (if I had an external hard drive) on my MacBook Pro to free up more space. Is this logical?

    Best Answer

An external hard drive is usually connected to your Mac by either a Firewire or USB cable. This means that it can only be connected to one machine at a time, although the transfer rate is very good, so it will respond as quickly as your internal drive or possibly even faster.

A Time Capsule on the other hand is effectively a wireless router, with a built in hard drive. The hard drive acts like a network storage drive - so it is available to all of your computers on the network at any time, and because it's wireless there are no messy cables to plug in and it can be located anywhere. The downside is that because data is transferred wirelessly, if you have large amounts of data that you need to access very quickly, it will respond slower than an external drive connected directly.

I have around 10,000 photos in my iPhoto library that I access across the network. It works well, although there is a noticeable lag in performance, which an external hard drive would help overcome.
