So ... if I buy a Time Capsule, I don't need my Airport Extreme Base Station any more, is that right?

In my case, the Apple instructions worked perfectly. I first installed the Time Machine and created the home network, with all of my computers recognizing it--no problem for me at all. Then I took my old Airport Extreme and followed its instructions for creating a relay bridge to extend my wireless signal from the Time Machine to all over the house. I would go back to the start, find the user manuals--online if you don't have them printed out--and start by setting up the Time Machine to receive an input from your cable or DSL modem, and to connect wirelessly with all your equipment--or you can use ethernet cable. After the network is working, then try to set up your Airport as a wireless relay bridge to extend the wireless area of good reception.

Yes, you can. The only reason you would need an TV is if you were actually wanting to stream the movies to your TV. If your movie library is part of your iTunes Library, you may need to tweak some preferences to get it to be able to play it in iTunes, yet keep it stored on the Time Capsule drive.

can time capsule backup my Mac using a WiFi signal rather than a hard cable?
I want to do away with cable internet. I will use my iPhone as a WiFi hotspot allowing the Mac access to the internet. Can the Time capsule still back up my Mac?

Best Answer
Yes but - you would only do one thing at once:
1. Mac -> Wifi -> iPhone -> Internet
or
2. Mac -> Wifi -> TC
You can't link the TC to your Mac at the same time as the iPhone and Internet.- Answered by Bill H

Yes, Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express can each be used to create a wireless network without an internet connection. You simply check the "Ignore" box when AirPort Utility requests that you connect internet.

Is there a way to access Time Capsule remotely without Mobileme?
For example, if I'm working on files from a building that is in a different city/state, will it be able to back up if I am connected to a Wifi network at that location and the Time Capsule has access to a wireless network also?

Answer
You just have to redirect the port that corresponds to the AFP protocol (usually 548) to your time capsule with your router.
Then you can connect anywhere with this address : afp ://your.public.ip.adress/
To add the time capsule in your finder as a network volume :
Go > Connect to server ... (cmd+K) and enter the address
afp: //your.public.ip.adress/
Hope that will help.- Answered by Stéphane B

It's time capsule a RAID device?
I mean, the information saved in the TC it's protected with a RAID configuration.
What happen with the information if the TC break down.- Asked by Jim T from Philadelphia
- Sep 5, 2012

Answer
No, it's not a RAID device, there's only a single drive in it. When that drive is gone you will loose all data on it, which in most cases is just backup data from your Mac(s) so no big deal as the original data is still on your Mac. You can also use a Time Capsule as a normal network drive and that data will be gone if the drive breaks. There is however a possibility to backup the internal drive to an attached USB drive.

Yes, you can backup multiple Mac's to one TImeCapsule, drive space is the only limitation to how many Mac's you can backup on a TImeCapsule (as far as i'm aware). I've 3 x TimeMachines on one TImeCapsule at the moment.
PS Make certain you archive your TImeCapsule backups from the TimeMachine (when it becomes full) to an external drive.- Answered by Jules J from Paddington

Using a Time Capsule with a Playstation 3
I current have an Airport Base Station (Dual Ethernet), connected to an iMac. My playstation 3 communicates to the internet via the base station. I want to upgrade to a 1 TB Time Capsule. I'm wondering if i upgrade, will the playstation still be able to communicate with the internet.

Likely you can because Time Capsule takes the place of WiFi–it enables your connection to the internet but also allows you to store data wirelessly. You may or may not be able to use the Time Capsule as a hard drive for your PS3 because that's not what it was designed to do.
From a wireless standpoint, however, Airport Extreme and Airport Express are the same. Because it's a new unit, you may have to play around with the PS3 preferences as you'd have to begin the whole wireless network again as if one hadn't existed before. Time Capsule doesn't necessarily take the place of an existing router.
BEAR in mind that if you care considering this option, be sure to know about the lifespan of this product. I don't personally have one, but I don't express interest in buying one because it has a 2-star rating and it is known to break after 18 months very frequently.- Answered by Jeffrey T from New York

1st of all you should get an iMac & yes you can connect a TC to your Cable Modem to create your own home "Wi-Fi" Network & it will work flawlessly! I was in the same boat as you a year ago & I switched from PC w/ already having Cable Internet & I was surprised how easily it was to set up the iMac & Wireless connection & how fast it was at that! I'm downloading 35 mps & uploading 15 mps via my TC Wireless "Wi-Fi" Connection to my iMac. Hope that answers your question?
