Typical one year limited warranty. Abuse will void the warranty. Generally they last five years and longer, usually replaced due to obsolescence rather than failure.
Considering that a router has no moving part, it's difficult to imagine the conditions that limit the lives of your routers to only one year. There are AEBS operating specifications available elsewhere at the Apple website.
Advice would be: when your AEBS is a year old, buy a new Mac computer with an AppleCare Plan which extends its warranty from one year to three years - then use the new Mac along with your other computers and devices on the AEBS network, and your AEBS warranty will be automatically expanded by that same three years.
This would result in four-year warranty protection for your AEBS.
With more than one Mac or Apple hardware with AppleCare coverage, by staggering your dates of purchase, Apple allows for a total five years warranty on the AEBS when it is used with the other Mac/Apple products that have added AppleCare Plans.
To save $50, consider the purchase of a refurbished AEBS (same Apple 1-yr limited warranty) from the online Apple Store, then fit it into the above advice.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Can i use my Linksys wireless-G router in conjunction with airport extreme base station - to extend the # of USB ports for printers & external HD?
- Asked by Emily G from Thousand Oaks
- Apr 6, 2010
- Flag as inappropriate
Answer
Yes, you can, when you set up the AirPort Extreme just select "Extend Wireless Network" and select the network you want to connect to, and it will automatically go into Bridge mode. If that is your only purpose of buying one (For multiple USBs), you just have to buy a USB hub and that's done, but if your Linksys router doesn't support USB hubs, then you should buy an AirPort Express (Less money, same functionality [USB with support for a hub]).

Can I connect an Optus cable modem to my Airport Extreme, and how is this done?
- Asked by Tom H from Australia
- Feb 6, 2011
- Flag as inappropriate
Answer
I just had Optus Cable installed. Great...until I discovered my wifi wasn't working. After much searching online and through the unless Optus instructions (which don't say how to access the modem settings), I discovered a fix when reading something about Xbox 360 with Airport Extreme.
Basically the cable modem wasn't supplying an IP address, or the Airport Extreme wasn't passing it on, so wifi couldn't connect to the internet. All I did to make it work was go into...
Utilities (folder in Applications) > Airport Utility > Network (tab) and tick the box 'Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol' and the box 'Enable default host at:'
That seemed to let an IP address through. I got a warning about security, but I ignored it. Wifi now seems to be working fine.- Answered by Cody M from Melbourne

Can I use the AirPort Extreme Base Station with my wireless modem/router from Verizon FIOS?
I have a wireless modem/router in the basement and wired ports on our second floor. I'd like to add the AirPort Extreme Base Station to add wireless upstairs and to add extra wired ports in my office. Is this possible? How easy is it to set up? What do I need to do? Thanks!

Assuming your Verizon router has ethernet ports, you can plug your airport express into your Verizon router. You would probably be best off disabling the Verizon routers' wireless capability, as it will just take up more wireless bandwidth - the airport extreme is way better anyways and you probably wont want to have to deal with having two different wireless networks. One thing you may consider doing is putting the AEBS in "bridge" mode - this way the verizon router will be the one dishing out IP addresses, and you will be able to use both the ethernet ports on the AEBS and the Verizon router. If the AEBS is dishing out IP addresses, devices wired to the AEBS may not be able to "see" devices wired to the verizon router.

Is there any difference between a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme other than the integrated hard drive?
My absolute top priority is the wireless network. I've got another, large network drive for storage. But for some reason, my university bookstore is selling a Time Capsule with 500 GB of storage at a cheaper price than the Airport Extreme. Is there any reason to still choose the Airport Extreme? If there's no difference, I'll get the TC, save $$, and get a bonus hard drive!

Answer
I just checked with and Apple Store person yesterday. Time Capsule is essentially an AirPort Extreme with a built in drive.
I don't understand how the Bookstore can contractually sell the current Airport Extreme Base Station ($179 USD) for less than the older Half TB Time Capsule ($249 USD), but I am not a retailer. The Time Capsule might be refurbished or used?- Answered by James M from Denville

what is the benefit of an AirPort Extreme over an Airport Express
- Asked by Rena N from Tumwater

Best Answer
The AirPort Extreme has three extra Gigabit ethernet ports. The AirPort Express only has one ethernet port, which it uses for the internet connection. So the AirPort Express can only be used with wireless computers. You can't connect an ethernet printer or a computer via ethernet.
The AirPort Express offers AirTunes, which the AirPort Extreme does not.
Both offer a USB port which can be used with printers. The Exreme's USB port can be used with a USB hard drive to put the drive on your network (handy for TimeMachine or other network backup). The AirPort Express does not support USB hard drives.
The AirPort Express can be used to extend a WiFi network wirelessly using "Wireless Distribution System" (WDS).
The newest AirPort Extreme offers the option of a "guest network" which does not use the same password as your main network.
In theory they have similar coverage, but I'd be surprised if the AirPort Express was not better (more space in the case for antennas).- Answered by Winston W from Atlanta

Can I connect to Verizon Wireless instead of a wired modem?
I have a Verizon MiFi device as the onloy available hi speed internet where I reside. Is it possible to expand my wifi with this AirPort Extreme Base Station using the limited capabilities (distance and number of users) by picking up the wifi signal from the MiFi device and routing it as stronger WiFi throughout my home? I am fairly certain I will not get any speed gain, since that is limited by the MifI device, but would like increased strong signal distance for the connections.

I lose connection to my ISP, will the airport extreme help boost the connections and prevent dropping

Answer
I was previously using a Belken router and was annoyed by frequent lost connections to the Internet by my Mac Book Pro and iMac. My HP wireless printers also experienced similar problems. The Apple Store recommended the airport extreme. I flinched at the cost and was not sure it would solve my problem. I had 30 days to try it out and if it didnt work I could return the router. Set up was easy and the speed of the router was much faster than the Belken. I have not had any problems with lost connections in almost a year.

whats the difference between the models MB053LL/A, MB763LL/A, and MA073LL/A?

- Asked by Sharran M from Atlanta

Best Answer
The latest model, MC340LL/A, is optimized to the final 802.11n wireless standard and works with all certified 802.11a, b, g, or n products. It provides better performance and range than any older model. It has Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band 5GHz and 2.4GHz, important to realize, as the iTouch and iPhone are currently 2.4GHz devices.
The other models named were previous "draft n 2.0" wireless base stations. However, the MA073LL/A was the oldest, did not include Gigabit Ethernet, or dual-band capability.
While the MB053LL/A did include Gigabit Ethernet, it did not have simultaneous dual-band network capabilty - it can be setup to provide either a 5GHz network or a 2.4GHz network.
MB763LL/A included Gigabit Ethernet and had dual-band network capabilty - can be setup to provice both a 5GHz network and a completely separate 2.4GHz network. The two networks will have different names and use different channels.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Verizon Fios compatibility
Is the Airport Extreme Verizon Fios compatible? Can I plug it directly into the ethernet port of the wall or would I have to connect it to the existing Verizon Fios router. If it has to plug into the router, how would I go about setting up the wireless provided by the Airport Extreme?

I use Fios and Airport everyday. My Airport Extreme is hard wired to my Fios router. I disabled the wireless on my Fios router to lessen the chance of interference and because I wanted the features of an Apple Airport network (music, ease of use). I then set my Airport Extreme to bridge mode so it isn't creating another subnet, my Fios router is still providing the wireless network IP addresses to all the wireless clients. I also have an Airport Express operating in WDS mode providing streamed music to a speaker and also extending my network. Lastly, I have a basic Canon inkjet printer connected via USB to my Airport Extreme acting as a network printer. My clients are a MacBook, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, and an iPad.

Does it have the same socket to connect an external antenna as the old flying saucer Base Station?
I'd like to use my old antenna if possible, but if it's operating at different frequencies I'd guess that's not going to work...

Using your old antenna will not work as you already guessed. The faster 802.11 n (Draft) standard needs another setup (actually more than one antenna for full speed), which is built into the device.
