Answer
The router will always be transmitting the wi-fi signal, but you can default any computer to wired Ethernet by disabling the wireless card of any laptop or desktop that has one built in. It will then search for the Ethernet port as a mean to connect to the Internet.

can airport extreme or express be used as a dsl modem? if not, then what apple product can be used as a modem?
I only have 3 apple product (Pro, air, and iphone). I'm planning of getting a 2 Mbps dsl connection at home. I like keeping all my products from apple, so I want to know if i can use any apple product (airport extreme, express, or anything) as a modem? if not, then what can I use as a dsl modem?

Best AnswerIt cannot be used as a DSL modem. Apple does not make anything that can be used as a DSL modem. Your ISP will provide a modem, and the AE plugs into that to provide it's services.

Does the the AirPort Extreme support trunking (link aggregation, IEEE 802.1AX-2008 or IEEE 802.3ad) on it's wired ethernet ports?
I am wondering if the latest AirPort Extreme supports trunking (also known as link aggregation, IEEE 802.1AX-2008 or IEEE 802.3ad)? The idea is to attach two ethernet cords between this AirPort Extreme and another switch that supports trunking.

Is the Airport Extreme compatible with Windows 7?
I haven't had the bank-roll yet to switch to a Mac, so I am stuck with my PC running Windows 7 (which was NOT my idea). The product decription says it works with Windows XP (SP3) and Vista (w/SP1 or later).
I need a new router TONIGHT, and I want to get the top of the line. This AirPort Extreme seems to be what I am looking for, I just don't want to have to mess around with changing my PCs operating system.
Thanks for any help!- Asked by Marc F from Bloomington

Best AnswerYou won't have any problem. Simply install the AirPort Utility for Windows from the included CD onto your Windows 7 computer, connect everything (the power cable last), and open AirPort Utility and follow the onscreen instructions.
You'll probably be advised early on that there is a (free, quick and easy, small) software update available from Apple for your new AirPort Utility, and once that's installed you'll be able to install the latest firmware update to the Extreme. These updates were just posted Dec. 16, so they won't have shown up on the hardware in inventory this fast.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

my set up, netgear wireless router connected to internet, macbook wireless to this airport express wireless for itunes can I improve on this?
Im not sure if this is the best set up and whether I would be better wirelessly connecting to the airport express and using this as a bridge to my netgear but would i then loose the itunes facility.
I do share my internet at the moment wirelessly with my son via the netgear.- Asked by Steve H from New York

Answerhi there, i assume that by connecting to the airport express for itunes you mean that you airplay to the airport express for itunes you mean that you stream to it to a set of speakers, the setup i would recommend would be this, ether connect your express to the netgear router through a ethernet cable and have the airport express make the wireless network and disable the netgear routers wireless output and have your son connect to the airport instead of the netgear, or put the airport express in bridge mode and use it like that, i have a bt home hub connected through ethernet to a airport extreme which makes the network then airport expresses bridging it and this works ok, i hope this helps but remember before you do anything make a configuration file of your current setup (Airport utility > File > export configuration file) so you can get back to this setup quickly if needed :)

Can I connect my stereo receiver to Airport Extreme to wirelessly play songs from iTunes through external speakers (as I can with Airport Express)?

Best AnswerTo clarify, you can still have the airport extreme to handle your base station functions and also have the express hooked up to your stereo for streaming. I have three express routers hooked up to three different stereo's throughout the house and outside and can play all three at the same time from Itunes or from pandora ( and other streaming services ) using Airfoil.

What is the difference between Airport Express MD031LL/A and MD031AM/A? They offer both versions where I live.
I want to buy the fifth generation version that is applicable in Puerto Rico and the US. They are selling one model at Best Buy and a different model at Modernika.

Best AnswerSame piece of equipment, only different part numbers for different countries. AirPort Extreme MD031LL/A is the US part. AirPort Extreme MD031AM/A is the Canada part. On the bottom of both, it shows the same identifier: "Model A1408"

Best Answer
Old question, but if it's still important to you - yes you can. BT infinity comes with a modem, this is connected in turn to a BT supplied router (home hub 3) so just replace the home hub with your air extreme and setup, it'l work just fine.

Which is the best modem (in the UK) to use with the Airport Extreme
I am upgrading from my awful belkin to an Apple extreme base station, wondering which is the best modem to use with it, would a simple speedtouch work, or are there better ones? Would it be possible to plug the adsl cable to my belkin and then and ethernet cable from that to the Airport base station?

Best AnswerI have found the Draytek Vigor 120 to be a perfect match for my Time Capsule / Airport Extreme.
I tried using my old Netgear router in modem only mode but the problem is a lot of ISP's in the UK use PPPOA to deliver the broadband signal and there is not way I could see to configure Airport Extreme for PPPOA.
The Draytek Vigor 120 bridges PPPOA to PPPOE. The modem is zero configuration. You literally just plug your phone line into the modem and then connect the modem to the Airport Extreme WAN port. You enter ISP settings via Airport utility.
Draytek have a handy set up guide for most routers which includes the settings you need for Airport Extreme. Highly recommended.- Answered by Nigel M

Can I use an Airport Extreme along with an Airport Express to effectively extend ethernet to a HDTV
I have a dual band airport extreme connected to Roadrunner serving my Macbook Pro, iPod touch, USB printer and a USB hard drive. I also have an airport extreme to stream iTunes audio to my stereo system. I am buying a Samsung 55B8000 HDTV that has a USB port to be used with a Samsung proprietary wireless adapter for wireless internet connection which I don't have. The TV also has an ethernet port that can be used for internet downloadable firmware updates, streaming internet video and some other goodies, That port can be easily set up as a DHCP connection to the internet. To avoid buying the proprietary Samsung adapter, can I use the ethernet port on the airport express to effectively extend the ethernet connection from the airport extreme to the airport express or is the airport express ethernet port only for a WAN connection and not a LAN connection? If the airport express won't do it, would a second airport extreme do it? i.e. use the LAN ports on both airports.

Best AnswerYes. The AirPort Express ethernet port can be used for either a WAN or LAN connection and does allow you to extend ethernet.
Although I suspect so, I don't know if you will be able to avoid buying the proprietary Samsung adapter.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Possible to use older Airport Express with new Airport Extreme?
I have an older 802.11a/b/g Airport Express connected to a D-Link router and a Comcast modem. I'd like to upgrade to an Airport Extreme for the faster 802.11n speeds and to get rid of the D-Link. Can I then connect the older Airport Express to my stereo system across the room and wirelessly stream music to it? I'm concerned it may not be backward compatible as it only uses 802.11a/b/g and the newer Airport Express is 802.11n - will that be a problem?

I have is an AIRPORT EXTREME A1143. Is the new model that much better as far as speed and range? Lately speeds have slowed much on my old one.
- Asked by Bob R from Jacksonville
- Apr 3, 2010
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes. Up to 25% better, plus the most important factor is the addition of MIMO technology which allows different speed clients to connect at their own speeds without slowing down the entire network. This would likely solve your problem while still allowing slower speed devices. However, an Extreme still only serves up to 50 clients.
The speed of the wireless network of your A1143 could not have slowed when serving only a single client. Wireless routers only provide slower service due to increased interference, greater demand from serving multiple clients, and/or when purposely accommodating a slower speed client.
When slower speed clients are allowed to connect to a faster speed network, all non-MIMO wireless routers that have multiple speed networking capability automatically slow down to the speed of the slowest client.
You can prevent this from happening by controlling access to your network, or by increasing the minimum speed requirement for wireless clients by changing the "Radio Mode" setting in AirPort Utility.
The A1143 has eight different Radio Mode settings to choose from - if not all are visible, press and hold the "option" (alt) key prior to clicking the Radio Mode popup.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Answer
The Ethernet cable from the cable box connects to the single Ethernet WAN port of the Extreme.
Connect the two desktops to two of the three Ethernet LAN ports.
Connect the three lap tops wirelessly to the Extreme's wireless network.
All five computers will then be connected to the network, and therefore, to each other, as well as to anything else that connects to the network, such as printers and hard drives, an Apple TV, iPhones and iPod Touches, Windows computers, various gaming devices, internet-enabled TVs, etc., etc. Each connected wired or wireless device is a network user, and the Extreme can accommodate a total of 50 users at the same time.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel
