Airport Express as an extender.
If you have an Airport Extreme setup and you want to use the Airport Express in repeater mode, does the Airport Express have to be hard wired or can it pick up the wireless from the Airport Extreme?

All of the answers above provide correct information, however if you are looking for higher wireless speeds, I would recommend using a hardwire Ethernet connection and then extending the network that way. Wireless to wireless extension can lower streaming and download rates just as much as poor signal can. In my house, I use an Airport extreme from my modem on the second floor ad then an Airport Express to extend my network in an area that I have had poor reception. I have tried both with and without a wired Ethernet connection and I have noticed significant changes to my download speed. I always have signal and of course the apple family of products has yet to fail me, but I have noticed this interesting difference.

Will an AppleTV be able to access movies on a hard drive that plugged into and shared across the Airport Extreme?

While the movies do have to be associated with an iTunes account, the movie files do not need to be on the same drive as the iTunes account. If you deselect "Copy movies to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" located in Advanced in iTunes preferences before you add the movies to the library, the files will remain on the external drive and will not be added to the drive that runs iTunes. AppleTV will be able to play those movies through the iTunes account.

AirPort Extreme Base Station
Can i add the airport extreme base station to my existing work network and and use it just for the guest network so that the guests dont see networked devices?

Answer
Yes, I have one Netgear router and an Airport Extreme and they can both do this. I prefer to uses the Airport Extreme as the primary with my OS X server (authenticating via Radius) as it's more secure and use the Netgear for guests. I also have the Extreme set to 5.8ghz and the Netgear covering 2.4ghz as most Apple products support 5.8ghz.
I hope this helps :)

can I use it to extend my current wireless network?
I have wireless already and basically just want to extend it to a remote area of my home. Will this work or is the "express" the better option?

Answer
Yes, you can use the AirPort Extreme to extend your current wireless network. This can be done in one of three ways.
1. You can connect the AirPort Extreme to your existing router using an ethernet cable and have the wireless settings on the AirPort Extreme the same as your existing router.
2. You can 'extend' the AirPort Extreme from your existing router, this may not work with all other routers, but if your existing router is also and AirPort, it will.
3. You can 'join' the AirPort Extreme to your existing router, as far as I'm aware, this will also work.
Note that I've only ever used the first way here, so I'm not 100% sure how effective the other two are.- Answered by Kristian M

Will my external HDD turn off when not being used?
When my externally powered HDD is plugged into the AirPort Extreme and not being accessed will it turn off?
It normally powers down when plugged into a laptop and the laptop is turned off.
Otherwise the external HDD will be constantly running day and night, limiting it's life.

Hello. In order to extend the wireless signal with a non-apple product you will need to setup a Roaming Network. It will only work with a hard wire connection between the Netgear and AirPort Extreme. Please search the apple support pages for:

Can I use the Airport Extreme as a Repeater or an Network Extender?
I work in a yard where my iPhone and HP laptop can see a wireless signal but I'm so far away I cannot connect to the signal to use it. Can I use the Airport Extreme like the Express as a repeater? I don't know if it matters but the internet signal does require a user name and password in order to be used. I'm assuming that since the extreme cost more it could potentially work with a greater range, or is it about the same?

Yes, you can use the Airport Extreme as a repeater or a network Extender. When you're setting it up with the Airport utility software, simply put it into repeater mode. The Airport Extreme has a range of at least 250 meters, which is about 820 feet, which is pretty impressive!

What is the difference between bridge mode and not bridgemode? What does bridge mode really do? What is the best sollution?
- Asked by Robin Alexander H

Best Answer
Your solution depends upon the type of network you're designing.
If you have only one router on your network and it is set to bridge mode, your network (wired or wireless, or both) will be active but will not be open to connecting to your internet access. If the single router is not set to bridge mode, your network will be able to be connected to your internet access.
When your network will contain more than one router, select bridge mode for each of the additional routers if they will be connecting to a router or other network device that is already using DHCP and NAT to provide IP addresses to computers on your network.
You can use any one of the routers to be the DHCP/NAT server as long as the others are setup in bridge mode. You will usually want to choose the router with the greatest serving capacity to be your DHCP/NAT server. An AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule's network is limited to serving up to 50 users, while an AirPort Express is limited to serving up to 10.
What bridge mode really does is to allow additional routers to connect to the network without conflicting with the DHCP/NAT server. Additional routers may extend the network's wireless range and/or enable additional wired connections for clients and devices.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

How can you connect APE connect to an Orange Livebox Mini wifi router to take advantage of the APE wider network or should you just use APE only?
I have Orange livebox mini, can I connect it to APE via ethernet and still have the performance capabilities of the APE fully, 2 band widths more connectivity (upto 50 claimed?) etc. and still have the same Wifi speed connection.
Or would I need to replace the Livebox completely with the APE to get the best results. If so how would I do this, bearing in mind I am a complete layman and as such would probably be stumbling in the dark trying to achieve this. Hope someone out there can help, thanks.- Asked by Bev D

does the airport extreme support wifi protected setup? the reviews i read say no, the wifi certification doesn't say, but the airport ap seems to
wifi protected setup can pair base stations and clients without the need of typing
the passphrase, the passphrase is sent to the client automatically based on authentication methods such as a push button, a pin number, or near field methods.
reviews of the airport extreme say that the unit does not support wifi protecfted setup
and the wiif alliance does not list it has having the feature
but the air port utility app seems to be able to negotiate wifi protected setup.- Asked by Matthew F from San Jose

This does work if you use the older 5.6 version of the AirPort utility. Apple seems to have removed the feature from the 6.x releases.
If you have version 5.6 you can use the Add Wireless Clients feature as was mentioned above.- Answered by Larry G from Amherst

To answer your question, I've provided a brief comparison of the features in the AirPort Express and the AirPort Extreme.
AirPort Express
-AirPlay support (If you have speakers hooked up, your iTunes music can be streamed to those speakers via AirPlay; see iTunes help for more)
-Printer Sharing via Wi-Fi
-Creates Wi-Fi networks (a/b/g/n) capable of speeds of 350mbps (actual internet speed depends on your ISP's plan)
-Portability
-1 Gigabit Ethernet port
AirPort Extreme
-4 Gigabit Ethernet ports
-Printer/Disk sharing via Wi-Fi
-Creates dual-band WiFi networks (a/b/g/n) [In short: One network for some devices to connect to, and another for others)- Answered by Ethan K from Pinedale
