I'm hoping that OpenCL programming is supported on the ATI Radeon HD 5770/80 on a Mac Pro (4,1 in my case). Anybody have direct experience?
I'm only interested in the cards as compute engines, not really as displays, so a purchase decision here depends on the answer. My code runs fine on the default Nvidia chipset (GeForce GT 120) and on the GT 330 on my Macbook Pro, but the Radeon ought to be able to hit much higher gigaflops ratings....
Anybody gotten, say, the Galaxies openCL demo code running on the Radeon cards?- Asked by Mark M from Friday Harbor

AnswerOpenCL is supported. However, you will notice a significant performance drop between the 5770 under Mac OS X (at least, 10.6.7) vs., say, Windows or Linux. You will also notice a massive improvement over the Nvidia cards if your workload is integer-heavy vs floating point, because of the massive number of "simple" stream processors in AMD cards vs the lower number of complicated compute cores in GeForce cards.
Windows and Linux rely on the AMD/ATI drivers, which have some alignment optimizations that give about a 50% improvement in performance than the Apple-produced drivers.
You'll also find that you'll need to be more careful writing your kernels in Mac OS X vs. Windows/Linux. They tend to segfault much more easily on the Mac.
If you're looking to play with OpenCL the 5770 will do fine under OS X. You should be able to run most basic stuff. It's only when you start optimizing or going outside the basic operations that you may have problems.
I ended up using my 3,1 and 5770 upgrade for validation runs and then built two linux machines with multiple AMD 69xx cards for brute force OpenCL results.- Answered by Art T from Oakland

Can this Apple ATI Radeon 5770 work in a PC ?
I have an Apple 27" LED Cinema Display connected to an HP Core i7 PC with HP ATI Radeon 5570 which has one display port.
But I need 2 27" displays and am thinking of getting the Apple ATI Radeon 5770 which has 2 mini display ports. Other than issue about fitting the graphics card in the PC, and making sure there is enough power, is there any reason why this specifc card wouldn't work ?
I am not interested in suggestions about other graphics cards or other ways of saving money. I am specifically interested to know if this Apple ATI Radeon 5770 card would or would not work in a PC.
I know that PC graphics cards may need special flashing to work on Apple Mac Pro, but my question is about the reverse, making the Apple ATI 5770 work in a PC with core i7 (second generation)- Asked by Graphics U

Yes it will. I have the same computer with a HD5770 and it works. Even the mini display works fine with dual display mode.

I have a 3,1 Mac Pro and want to replace the dead video card in it. If I buy this "kit" do I need anything else? Or can this just replace the bad one?
Early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 with a non working stock ATI card.
I need to find a replacement but saw this was listed as a "kit" and did not know if I needed something other than this kit to get it up and going.- Asked by Joshua C from Indianapolis

AnswerI have exactly the same model as you, a Mac Pro 3,1 and am running the 5770 and the old card as well to give me a total capacity of 4 screens (although I'm only using 2.
Yes you can just replace the old card without any hassle. Just be sure you have the minimum required MacOS X version which I believe is 10.6.4, but I'll assume you're running Lion.

Mac Pro 2x 5770 Three Screen/ Eyefinity DVI adapters
I have 2 5770's 1 from apple and one from asus (i'm running Lion so it doesn't need to be flashed. I tried running three screens but no matter what order I plug the screens in it doesn't work. All screens use DVI. 1 of them is connected to a Active singelink mini display port to DVI adapter, the other is using a passive single link DVI to MDP, and the third is just using regular DVI.
Do i need a dual link adapter or another active single link? or a active dual link?
Please be specific as i would like to get my screens running.- Asked by Michael L from Flushing

Answer
I've have an idential machine and reviewed many forums and sites on this issue, and I have spoken with tier 2 Apple support. The 5770 is not officially supported on the 09 Mac Pro but the 5870 is. Having said that, everyone seems to have the 5770 working on 09 Pro's on the video side. Nobody is getting audio via the displayport in OSX on older Macs with either card but apparently it works on 2010 models. It does output audio via MDP under Win 7 though. I submitted a feature request to enable audio on older Pro's with an update for OSX. We'll see.

Will I have to remove my old graphics card, or can I just use an open PCIe slot?!?
The question is like the title. Will. Have to take out the old graphics card. I ask because it seems kind of difficult,
- Asked by Wiiliam L from Kingwood

AnswerYes, you will have to remove your old graphics card and replace it with your new one in the same slot. This is because that particular slot has a 16x lane width for maximum bandwidth throughput. The ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit comes with instructions on how to do it.
Your old graphics card can be moved to another slot giving you the ability of displaying at least 4 screens. If you don't want or need this capability, then just remove it and put it away or sell it on eBay.

AnswerThis is a cut and paste answer from JJ to another question about using this card on an early 2008 Mac Pro (so I would assume that it would work on the later model 2009 mMac Pro as well- I'm about to purchase this for my late 2008 Mac Pro):
Yes, the ATI HD 5770 does work in the Early 2008 model Mac Pro as I have done exactly that.- Answered by Hans M from Wallingford

How does this series compare to the NVidia 8800GT?

Best AnswerAccording to Tom's Hardware (google: Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart), the 5770 is six tiers above the 8800GT. The recommended minimum upgrade is 3 tiers to see a worthwhile improvement. So this should be a good upgrade.

Will the 5770 run 1 1 DVI to ADC adapter (20" Cinema Display monitor) and 2 projectors via Mini Displayport to VGA adapters?
From what I've read, running 3 projectors with VGA adapters isn't a problem, but I can't find an answer to the first question - can the 5770 run 1 DVI to ADC adapter (20" Cinema Display monitor) and 2 projectors via Mini Diplayport to VGA adapters?

To use three monitors, does this work with the recently-available active single-link DP to DVI adapters (NOT the simple passive one that Apple sells)?
Late last year, active single-link DVI adapters became available that function in the same way as the active dual-link adapter that Apple sells, but is intended for use with smaller, single-link monitors. These provide the same added intelligence that the dual-link adapters provide, but only support single-link resolutions. This makes them much cheaper (typically around $30) and they don't don't require the extra power of a USB port.
Can these adapters be used with this card in a mid-2010 (5,1) Mac Pro to drive the second and third monitors in a three-monitor setup?- Asked by Robert W from Phoenix
- Aug 30, 2011
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerTo run 3 monitors with this card - 2 of them need to be "active" on the display port connections.
I run the card with 2 display port monitors (an HP and DELL) and 1 DVI monitor - (A 1080p projector with an hdmi/dvi passive adapter). I'm doing this in both a 2010 and 2008 mac pro.
I assume because of this, you can buy the active dual-link dvi/dp adapter and get the same results.
But I can confirm you can't do this with a passive adapter.- Answered by Matthew B from Bellingham

Does this card support 3D output in any way? Have a Mac Pro 2008 3,1 with HDMI 1.4a for output of blu-ray video/games in bootcamp, 3d games on Mac
I see some mention of ATI supporting 3D in the 5000 seires cards on PC but I see no way to get 3D signal out of this mac card. Can you do it through DVI? Can the DVI connection be adapted to HDMI 1.4a (the minimum needed for a 3D HDMI connection to TV or projector or monitor)? Are there any mini-displayport adapters to HDMI 1.4a? So far, I have either found mention of HDMI 1.3 or no specific HDMI version (that includes Moshi and Belkin adapters that Apple recommends). HDCP may be a background issue as well.
I can play Blu-Ray on bootcamp/win 7 with stock ATI 2600 card and Apple Display 30". I want to add a 3d monitor to my office and try 3D that way.
As a side note, I hear that Mac Mini with the Nvidia graphics can output 1.4a via built-in HDMI under bootcamp/win 7 but I have not verified this myself.- Asked by Reginald L from Ottawa
