If it has an intel chip you can. First, you must update to the latest version of Snow Leopard via Software Update. Then go to the Mac app store and search"OSX Lion". After that choose either the server version or the regular version. Click on "Buy" and if you have sufficient funds in your Apple ID account, it will start to download.

It depends on if you have an Intel Mac or not. All Macs purchased in 2007 or newer have an Intel chip. If you're running a Powerbook, iBook, or another PowerPC Mac, you're out of luck.

Answer
Yes you can. It's not a license upgrade, it's a software upgrade irrespective of license. Your current 10-user license does not change the functionality, just the number of users/clients in WGM.

29.99 or 499.99?
in the apple store there is a snow leopard software fro 29.99 and on for 499.99! i was to update my 10.4.11 to this newer version to sync my ipad and mac together. Which one is the one i need?

Answer
$29.99 if you want the standard OSX Snow leoprd.
$499.99 is for "Mac OSX Snow Leopard SERVER" version. Unless you're running a company, I don't think the $499.99 version is for you.

Answer
No.
Snow Leopard Server (Mac OSX 10.6) only runs on Intel Macs.
You can install Leopard Server (MacOSX 10.5); which still supports PPC-based Macs.

What if I would like to upgrade from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard? What should I get?
I really would like to run Boot Camp on my computer, and feel upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard would be the smartest route. I am not sure what programs to buy.

Hi EH,
Is this really an OS X Server question?
You want to upgrade your Mac from OS X 10.4 Tiger to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, so you can run Boot Camp and boot Windows, correct? You just need OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, $29.95. You don't need Server to run Boot Camp.
Do you use iLife, or other separately sold and licensed Apple products on top of Mac OS? OS X 10.4 Tiger to OS X 10.5 Leopard was a significant upgrade, with many new features and it was priced to match. $129.95 for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard upgrade from 10.4, and you'll be wise to upgrade any separate products, Apple or other, you've got on your system.
Apple has a migration path they call the "Box Set" that includes OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (not Server) with the latest iLife and iTunes, etc. If you are using iLife, the Box Set might be smarter than just throwing the $29.95 Snow Leopard under your 10.4 apps and hoping for the best. 10.5 really DID add a lot and 10.6 includes all that too.
On the other hand, if you're running the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email client and Open Office, play your music on iTunes and keep your photos in separate directories, then back up your data, install Snow Leopard as an upgrade, and see what happens. Your productivity tools, except, iTunes, are all open-source and free to download the latest versions. You lead a slightly exciting life as a technogeek and you enjoy it.
You have to pay to upgrade iTunes, you may have to do a clean re-install (initialize boot disk, that's the clean part. Then boot the Snow Leopard 10.6 CD/DVD and install it, then everything else). A clean install/reinstall means putting all (ALL) your user data back on (that's why you back it up first). You'll have to recreate user accounts and browser book marks, and reinstall your applications. Some of them may need to be upgraded from 10.4 Tiger to their latest versions, 10.5/10.6. You can back-up your iTunes by sync'ing to an iPod and then sync'ing back back to the new OS.- Answered by Bill A from Oakland

Best Answer
If your Mac is a PowerPC unit, you can upgrade to Leopard from Tiger
If you are running an Intel Mac, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger
To find out which processor you have, click the apple logo in the top left of the screen, then on "about this mac". You can then see if you are running an Intel processor or not.- Answered by Guy L from Esher

Can Snow Leopard Server be installed on an EXTERNAL Hard Drive?
I'd like to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server on an EXTERNAL hard drive through either FireWire or USB. Is this possible?

As long as the drive is partitioned with the GUID partition map (see Disk Utility), then yes Snow Leopard server will install and boot on an external drive. This is only recommended for testing purposes and not a production server though.

Can I remotely full control my Mac Mini Server that host in the datacenter from my Mac in office?

Answer
Yes.
Apple includes both Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on a second DVD, which are GUI tools which run on your local Mac and provides full remote management.
Likewise you can always use VNC (Apple calls it "screen sharing") to access the server's GUI remotely, and launch ServerAdmin and all the other Server-related tools as if you were siting in front of the Server itself.
If command line is more your style, SSH (standard remote shell access) is always available.
We use OSX Server in our data centre, and we manage the device remotely from our offices all the time. I use a combination of ServerAdmin, Workgroup Manager, VNC, and SSH to do everything remotely.- Answered by Chris K from Calgary
