When you install Snow Leopard, do you have to reinstall non-apple programs?
I use Photoshop CS2 on a daily basis, and could really benefit from the increased speed offered by Snow Leopard. But I lost my install disks for the Adobe Creative Suite-so if installing Snow Leopard is going to delete Photoshop-it's not gonna work for me. Haha.

Best AnswerNo because the upgrade doesn't delete any files whatsoever. It just upgrades without doing anything to the data.

How do I know how much disk space I have on my computer?
- Asked by Troy M from Castle Rock

- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerOn desktop, click hard drive icon to select it.
Go to file menu and select Get Info.
(or simply "right-click" on hard drive icon and choose Get Info.)
You will see "Capacity" of drive, and "Available" and "Used" space.
Note: you may have several "hard drive icons" on a single physical drive. That is because the Mac treats each partition as a separate drive. To see all partitions, launch the "Disk Utility.app". On the left side, it will list all the partitions on each physical drive, whether mounted on the desktop or not. You can select any partition and click on "info" at top of the "Disk Utility" window to see space used and free space on that partition.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

can I upgrade from OS X version 10.4.11 to 10.6 Snow Leopard with a 2.16 ghz Intel Core 2Duo Processor.
- Asked by Reed G from Pomona

- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes. But make sure you have at least 1GB of memory first.
I have the same processor, and I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.6 using the $29 Snow Leopard DVD. Although, the $29 Snow Leopard DVD supposedly does not "automatically" upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.6, all the tools to upgrade are on the DVD. Here are the steps I used:
1) First, keep (or clone to an external bootable drive) your old bootable partition with the old OS on it. This allows you to have a backup and still be able to start up with OS 10.4.11, if you wish to, after Snow Leopard is installed.
2) Start doing a clean install of Snow Leopard to a fresh partition. In order to do a clean install with the $29 DVD, you will have two options when you start up from the DVD... "Utilities" or "Continue". Select "Utilities" and when the Mac restarts, select "Disk Utilities" from the "Utilities" menu. Do a format of your "fresh" partition and then QUIT "Disk Utilities".
3) Now Snow Leopard will begin installing. During the install, it will search your Mac for all other partitions with an older OS and then ask you if you want to import your OS Settings, Applications and Files from one of those other partitions. Do this for a very smooth upgrade transition to the new OS. (If you decide to not import, then you will end up with a clean install of Snow Leopard instead.)
4) After restarting with the newly installed Snow Leopard, go to the Apple Menu and do Software Updates to bring your system up to OS 10.6.8.
5) All my Apps from OS 10.4.11 continue to work in Snow Leopard, but some of my printer drivers and scanner utility did not. Until I found those upgrades, I was still able to start up from the OS 10.4.11 partition to use my printers and scanner. To change the Start Up partition, either use the Start Up Disk in System Preferences... or press OPTION after you turn your Mac on.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

I have a iMac G5 with a CPU PowerPC G5 (3.0). Can I get an Intel processor installed in it so I can Snow leopard?
- Asked by Richard O from Maumelle

Best AnswerNo, your machine has a PowerPC G5 processor, and the Intel processor and motherboard architecture are completely different. The only solution to upgrading is to sell this machine and buy a new Intel based one.

Do I need to do a back up my documents and information before installation of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

Best AnswerYou should always back up all of your information before upgrading an operating system. Although "normally" everything will be ok... there is always a chance of a system corruption.

Best AnswerUpgrading doesn't erase your files, but it's always a good idea to backup your documents (or other files) on an external storage medium (like a hard drive, CD, DVD, memory card etc.)

If I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 do I need Snow Leopard and Lion to make the new iPhone 4S and my Mac run iCloud?
I just got the iphone 4S and took it in to the Apple store for set-up. The store is over an hour away from my home so I'm quite surprised they didn't tell me I needed these software updates to run iCloud.

Best AnswerYou can access iCloud in 10.5.8 through the web browser (Safari). This is actually reasonably convenient, and a good solution that I use for my old PowerBook G4 (a 2002 Mac running 10.5.8).
To get "native" access to iCloud on the Mac (Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks etc.) you need OS X 10.7 (aka Lion). To upgrade to Lion, you need a Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor (or better) and at least 2 GB of RAM.- Answered by Rodney W from Niddrie

Is iWork 09 compatible with os x 10.6?
I bought iWork 09 for my G5 PowerPc recently. I have just bought an iMac 27" and when I try to open any iWork application on it I get an error message referring me to the developer. Are the two compatible and can I get an update for iWork 09?
- Asked by Tim C
- Jan 31, 2011

Best AnswerYES. Answer continued from previous post.
The archiving was unnecessary as;
a) iWork '09 is compatible with 10.6.8 CONFIRMED
b) all the parts you are deleting are System related and not user related, so will be reinstalled.
Therefore, delete iWork from /Applications and from /Library/Application Support and reinstall from DVD or DMG.
The versions installed will be Keynote 5.0, Numbers 2.0 and Pages 4.0. These will still not work, but Software Update should now offer you three updates as follows;
iWork Update 4 9.0.4
iWork Update 5 9.0.5
iWork Update 6 9.1
Applying all of these (no restart needed), will take the app versions to Keynote 5.1 (1018), Numbers 2.1 (436) and Pages 4.1 (923).
These will now work with 10.6.8. Most likely any version of 10.6, but I am being precise as that version is my only experience. To be exact my Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro also had the OSX Updates 10.6.8 v 1.1, and the 10.6.8 Supplemental Update applied, however I think these are mainly for correcting issues when Migrating or Upgrading to Lion OS X 10.7, so I doubt they are necessary to allow iWork '09 to work.
Good Luck and Enjoy. I wish this was already answered to save me the time!- Answered by M J P

I have mac osx 10.4.11. I can jump to snow leopard 10.6 without 10.5???
- Asked by Jorge N from Toa Alta

Best AnswerYes you can, but you will loose iLife 08' because it is not supported on the new OS. If you had Leopard installed first then you would have iLife 09' and it would do nothing when you installed Snow Leopard. I would recommend buying the the Snow Leopard Pack (which includes, iLife 09', Snow Leopard, and iWork 09') if your updating from Tiger. It costs less to do this than to buy Leopard and than Snow Leopard.

How well does OSX work with a touch screen monitor?
I have found the iPhone touch screen and voice over technology to be remarkably useful. I am wondering if there is similar technology built into OSX.6 when coupled with a touch screen monitor.
- Asked by Paul A from San Francisco

Best AnswerMac OS X works fine with most touch-screen monitors, you just have to make sure you have the correct drivers installed for the monitor. Then it should work fine.
If you would like to see how well a Mac works with a touch-screen though, I do recommend that you look up a website called Troll Touch (A company that specializes in touch-enabled Macs) or Axiotron (A company that make custom-made tablet MacBooks) there are also some good videos about touch-screen Macs on YouTube, so It may be worth your time checking on there!
I personally use a little 15" touch-screen monitor with my iMac, and it works fine! Just be sure to check the compatibility information that comes with your monitor!- Answered by Ryan T from Mundesley

Do I need to backup before I upgrade
Soon I will upgrade my MacBook to Mac OS 10.6. Do I have to backup my all data?
- Asked by Seung K from Lisle
- Jan 5, 2011
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerSeriously, you should keep regular backups. If you've never had a hard drive crash, you have no idea how mcuh of a hassle it is to retrieve your data files. Not to mention costly if you have to take the drive to a professional.
Time Machine helps a lot with regular backups and it's easy to use. I have a second hard drive connected to my Mac specifically for Time Machine. It works in the background so I don't have to think about it.
You don't have to do a clean install, or reformat your disk, to upgrade. It's just a good idea to back up all your data anytime you upgrade, just in case .- Answered by Marie D from Moreno Valley

AnswerYou must buy the snow leopard install disc then install it, you should keep your files. Go to software update and update to the latest version (10.6.8). Reboot and go to Mac App Store and purchase Lion ($29.99). Mount the .dmg and click on the Install Mac OSX Lion.app, then install and reboot. Use software update once again to update to 10.7.4
