I have an iMac with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 1 GB memory, V 10.5.8. Enough room for both Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades?
I want to access iCloud for intergration with my new iPhone and iPad but don't want to waste $ buying Snow Leopard and Lion if there's not enough memory or space on my desktop to accommodate.

Best AnswerIf you also have 5GB of hard drive space, you have the minimum requirements for Snow Leopard.
But, for Lion you will need extra memory. Lion requires a minimum of 2GB of memory. You have the minimum processor requirements. 7GB of hard drive space also required for Lion.
Upgrading is not that expensive. In July I upgraded my mid-2006 24" white iMac. A 2GB memory module cost $30 (I now have 2GB in one slot, and 1GB in the other slot, for a total of 3GB which is max usable by this iMac model). Also, replaced the internal 500GB drive with a new 2TB internal hard drive for $80.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

How can I get snow leopard on my MacBook Air
Is there anyway I can get snow leopard on my MacBook Air without buying an external disc drive? Can I use another computer somehow?

AnswerYes.
You can use "Remote Disc" - which is an Apple provided utility for accessing another computers disc drive.
If you search for "DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc" in Google, you will get an article form Apple that describes how to do this.- Answered by Rodney W from Niddrie

I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11, and I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Do I nead to buy Leopard first ?
- Asked by Pierre C

AnswerNo... you can move directly to Snow Leopard (as long as you have an Intel-based Mac). And you only need the $29 Snow Leopard DVD.
Here are the steps I used to move direct from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard.
1) First, keep (or clone to an external bootable drive) your old bootable partition with the old OS on it.
2) Start doing a clean install of Snow Leopard to a fresh partition. In order to do a clean install with the $29 DVD, you will have two options when you start up from the DVD... "Utilities" or "Continue". Select "Utilities" and when the Mac restarts, select "Disk Utilities" from the "Utilities" menu. Do a format of your "fresh" partition and then QUIT "Disk Utilities".
3) Now Snow Leopard will begin installing. During the install, it will search your Mac for all other partitions with an older OS and then ask you if you want to import your OS Settings, Applications and Files from one of those other partitions. Do this for a very smooth upgrade transition to the new OS. (If you decide to not import, then you will end up with a clean install of Snow Leopard instead.)
4) All my Apps from OS 10.4.11 continue to work in Snow Leopard, but some of my printer drivers and scanner utility did not. Until I found those upgrades, I was still able to start up from the OS 10.4.11 partition to use my printers and scanner. To change the Start Up partition, either use the Start Up Disk in System Preferences... or press and hold "option" while your Mac starts up.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Two questions about upgrading software...
I currently have Tiger 10.4.11 on my Mac Mini, my father just upgraded his mac's software from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and I was trying to find out if I can use his software (Snow Leopard) on my Mac since he is no longer using it? Also, can I upgrade straight from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6? Or do I need to purchase the software that goes in between those two operating systems? Thank You

AnswerThe OS disk that comes with a Mac is usually specific to that model Mac only. You will probably need to purchase the retail Snow Leopard disk. This would also give you a "license" to have Snow Leopard on your Mac Mini. Price for the retail DVD is currently only $20. Make sure your Mac Mini is Intel-based, not PowerPC based, as Snow Leopard can only be put on Intel-based Macs.
Using the retail disk, you can upgrade directly from OS 10.4.11. I upgraded directly from OS 10.4.11 by doing the following:
1) Made a separate new partition. The new partition can be on the same hard drive as the OS 10.4.11 partition, or on an external hard drive. Use disk utility on the Snow Leopard DVD to make the partition. Once starting up the Mac from the DVD, to find Disk Utility, click the "utilities" button, then select "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu. Snow Leopard may need to modify the formatting on a partition, so if using an already existing partition, any files already on it may be erased.
2) After creating the partition, Start Up again from the DVD and Install Snow Leopard to the new partition.
3) During the install, the installer will search your Mac for any other partitions with an OS on it. Then it will ask if you want to import OS settings, applications and files from the old partition. You may have to wait many minutes before the installer asks if it can import.
4) Start up with the Snow Leopard partition and do "Software Updates" (under the Apple menu) to bring Snow Leopard up to OS 10.6.8.
5) When done you will have a dual boot Mac, and can start up from either the old partition (OS 10.4.11) or the new partition (OS 10.6.8). Handy if you have an app or a driver that won't run in Snow Leopard, and you need some time before updating those apps/drivers.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

AnswerI've done the same - buy Snow Leapord from the Apple Online store (google Mac Snow leapord and today when I bought it, it was cheaper from Apple than from Amazon etc - 18 pounds inc. delivery). Install it on the Mac. once this is done, apparently we will then have an App store on our Mac - from the App store buy Mountain Lion and install that.

i have os x 10.5.8 and just got a nano 7th generation. when I try to sync to my mac itunes states I need iTunes 10.7.How do I do this?
I have gone thru the forum answers and I am confused about the needs ( Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion etc etc). Can someone give me very basic step by steps how to upgrade so I can use my new Nano? thx!
- Asked by Sandra S from Mississauga
- Jan 6, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerAs you've discovered, your Nano needs iTunes 10.7 or later, which requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or later.
Assuming you have an Intel Mac, you should purchase and install Snow Leopard. If you have a Power PC Mac, you won't be able to install Snow Leopard and therefore won't be able to run iTunes 10.7.- Answered by Robert T from Chatham
