What exact version is Snow Leopard 10.6 sold as DVD installation disk here
You cannot install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on Lion Machine. Therefore, the disk you buy here as Snow Leopard 10.6, is it the latest 10.6.8 or 10.6.3?

AnswerI realize you asked this question awhile ago. But as I just got this disc in the mail today and installed it on 2 computers, I can tell you now. The disc itself is 10.6.3, to get to 10.6.8 you need to click on "Software Update" after you install the disc.

I am running 10.5.8, on a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Am I able to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion?
- Asked by Craig E from Beaverton

Best AnswerThis will depend on your Mac.
I assume that if you have a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, that your Mac is from 2006/2007.
Unfortunately, Mountain Lion only supports Macs made after mid-2007. At the Apple website, search for support article HT5444, "System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion".
However, your Mac will run Snow Leopard (and Lion, if that is still available).
-----------------
To find out definitively if your Mac is supported by Mountain Lion, take note of your Mac's Model ID. (Under the Apple Menu, click on "About this Mac", then click on "More Info", then "Hardware"*, and there will be your Mac's model ID. (* For some "About this Mac" dialog boxes, click on "System Report" between "More Info" and "Hardware".)
Then go to the Apple website and search for "How to identify XXXX models". For XXXX enter the type of Mac you have: iMac, MacBook, MacBookPro, MacBookAir, MacMini, etc. You should end up with an article that lists all the models and, for the later models, the date they were released. (If no date is listed beside your model, then do an internet search for "WIKI Intel XXXX". Again substitute XXXX with the type of mac you have. WIKI has charts with approximate dates of release for each model.)
Use the release date, and compare to the "System Requirements for OS X Mountain Lion" at Apple website.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

AnswerDo an internet search for "apple.com iphone specs".
The iPhone 5 requires the following to sync iTunes with Mac:
- Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later (Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the last update of Snow Leopard)

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Upgrading?!
Hi all
My macbook works from a 2.16 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo processor, and I'd like to upgrade to a newer OS as lots of updates don't seem to work as the the system is really old!!
I've read I should buy the full disc set to upgrade to Snow Leopard but I can't seem to find that anywhere? Also, if I upgrade to Snow Leopard can I then upgrade straightaway to Lion via App store?
Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Best AnswerMy MacBook has the same processor as yours running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger. I bought the Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard from the Apple Online Store for $29. They sent me the SL installation disc containing the new version 10.6.3.
Following the onscreen instructions, I chose the standard upgrade installation option, and let Apple do its thing, which took about an hour. Then it announced that the installation was successful and the computer needed to be restarted.
After it restarted, an information box appeared which said that software updates were available and did I want to do that now. I was eager to see the new OS working, so I cancelled the software updating for later.
I was dismayed to find websites slow to load, and the computer generally acting sluggish, so I decided to let Apple do the software updates. I clicked the go-ahead and waited for about 45 minutes for the updating to finish. After that, the computer worked fine, zippier, and in addition, the OS had been updated to 10.6.8 and Safari 4 updated to Safari 5.1.5.- Answered by Eugene L from Mill Valley

what is the difference between mac os x 10.6 and mac os x 10.6 server?
in order to use use vmware fusion 5 and rosetta-based mac software i need to have mac os x 10.6 server. How do I know if the disc I have is the server or the plain snow leopard?
- Asked by Paul C from Baltimore

AnswerThe server version includes services that you can run to support other computers, including a web server, email server, and a file server.
If the disk is the server version, it will say so on the disc. If you run the OS X Server installer, it will also say "Server" in the splash screen.- Answered by John R from San Francisco

ready to upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion, will I lose information stored on my system in this transition?
- Asked by Bertha T from Chicago
- Apr 10, 2013
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerYou shouldn't lose any information.
But, to make absolutely sure, and protect your data in case of power failure during installation, try the following:
1) With Disk Utility, create a new partition and format as "Mac OS Extended "Journaled".
2) Then use Disk Utility to RESTORE your current OS 10.6.8 partition to the new partition (this will make a clone of Snow Leopard and all your data). Test that you can actually start up from the new partition.
3) Now start up from the partition you wish to upgrade to Mountain Lion and do so.
After, Mountain Lion is installed, you should be able to start up from either partition: Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard.
Alternatively, you could back up all your data to an external drive or a partition before installing Mountain Lion, but I prefer to make a clone and have both OS systems available... Some of my printers and scanners do not have drivers for Mountain Lion, so when I need to use them, I start up from Snow Leopard.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Best AnswerIt looks like you should be able to run Snow Leopard, although you didn't say how much RAM you have. Technically Snow Leopard only requires 1GB, but in my experience it works best with at least 2GB, and more is better.

I got a message from Chrome that it would no longer support, (or be supported by) OS 10.5.8. Since then, I get the above message every time. I can still watch YouTube videos through Bigpond.

AnswerSnow Leopard comes on disk and should be available in the Apple Store (both the retail store and the online store).
Lion and Mountain Lion are only available as downloads through the App Store. However, since release of Mountain Lion, Lion is no longer in the App Store and you will likely need to contact Apple's Customer Service in order to get. Does apple recommend running anti-virus software with snow leopard?
- Asked by John W from Menlo Park
- Oct 18, 2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerIt is always wise to have protection. Even with Mac's being a low target of viruses. Typically you can pick up a computer virus although, it might not affect your Mac you can pass it on to your Windows Friends/Co-workers. Rather you use Snow Leopard or any other version of Mac OS you should consider an antivirus software. However, I would not rush out in panic.
