Can I use the Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades twice, i.e. on two separate lap tops? Or do I need to buy two of each?

Answer
Because they are your personal machines, you may use the disc as many times as you need to upgrade to 10.6.8. As well, Lion you only need to purchase once and you may install it on as many personal machines as you would like. Just sign into the Mac App Store once you reach 10.6.8, Purchase Lion, and you can download it on all your machines.

Macs generally are safe from viruses, spyware, adware, and other types of malware designed for Windows PCs. While anti-virus applications can add an extra layer of security to your system, some common sense when browsing the web and opening email attachments is a far safer and cost-effective method.
However, it is highly recommended that you make regular backups, especially for a portable computer. Luckily, Time Machine, built right into Mac OS X, will automate the backup process for you. All you need is an external hard drive and Time Machine will take care of the rest.
Finally, if you are planning on installing Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp, then by all means it is a good idea to get anti-virus protection for the Windows side, since your Mac essentially behaves as a Windows PC would when booted into Windows.- Answered by Mike B from Roswell

Answer
On your Mac you can install as many times as you want, and have as many installations on different hard drive partitions as you want, for as long as you want. There is no expiry to how often or when in the future you might do another installation.
The only "restriction" is that the license for the US$19 "box" is for a single Mac. You are supposed to have a separate license for each Mac.
I keep a second installation of Snow Leopard on a second partition. This lets me start up from the other partition to use disk maintenance apps and the ability to Start Up my Mac when I mess things up with the OS settings on the main partition (especially if I am experimenting with some coding in Terminal).- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

There was a Snow Leopard Family Pack. At the time it cost $49 (for installation on up to 5 Macs in a household), while the Single License package cost $29.
On introduction of Lion, the Family Pack was no longer available, BUT the Single LIcense package dropped to $19.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

How far you can upgrade the Operating System depends on the Mac that you have.
If you have an Intel-based Mac with at least 1GB of memory, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) and do software updates to bring it up to OS 10.6.8.
If you want to upgrade past Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) to Lion (OS 10.7) or Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) you must have OS 10.6.8 already installed in order to use the App Store. (Note: I don't think Lion is still available from the App Store.)
Mountain Lion (and Lion) have specific system requirements, so make sure your Mac meets those system requirements before attempting to upgrade. For example, Lion must have at least a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU or later and 2 GB of memory; Mountain Lion will work on Macs made after mid-2007 (for the MacBook, the model number needs to be "MacBook5,1" or later, for the MacBook Pro the model number needs to be "MacBookPro3,1" or later, for the MacBook Air the model number needs to be "MacBookAir1,1" or later.) You can find the model number by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac" and then click on "More Info" and look at "Hardware".- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

safari 5 with mac osx 10.6.3?
Hi, I've bought upgrade - Snow Leopard 10.6.3 about week ago and I'd like to download Safari 5. Is that possible? Because on the download page it's said i should have 10.5 or 10.6.4.

Safari 5 for 10.6.3 is no longer available. You need to update your system. Click the Apple menu, then Software Update. You should see the 'Mac OS X update combined" item in it. Just install it and you'll be able to install Safari 5. You're system version must be 10.6.5 from now....

You just need the US$29 Snow Leopard installation DVD. The last I looked, the Apple Store was selling 10.6.3. After you install, go to the Apple Menu and select "Software Update" to bring Snow Leopard up to latest version (10.6.5).
Snow Leopard requires 1) Intel based Mac, 2) 1 GB RAM, 3) 5 GB hard drive space.
You can install on a freshly formatted partition and import your OS settings from your 10.5.8 partition. This way, you can start up from either partition. Most useful if you are not certain all your applications and drivers will work in Snow Leopard.
I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. A number of my drivers did not work initially (I had to find updated versions), so it was nice to be able to "jump back" to Tiger while I figured out how to get everything to work in Snow Leopard.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouver

Have 10.4.11 Tiger and a 2GHz INtel Core 2 Duo processor and want to upgrade to get a new printer. Can I upgrade right to Snow Leopard??
Mac 10.4.11 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2GB memory- Asked by Jeremy K from Canton

Answer
Yes.
I upgraded directly from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. In my case, I installed Snow Leopard to a fresh partition. During install, the installer searched for other partitions with an OS on it, and then asked if I wanted to import OS settings, apps and/or files. I said yes to all. Afterwards, I had a Mac that could start up from either OS 10.4.11 or OS 10.6 by pressing the option key during start up. This was handy for some third party utilities and some printer and scanner drivers that needed OS 10.4.11 until I could find updates for OS 10.6. Once satisfied that everything is working correctly you can, if you wish, delete the old partition since the installer should have copied all apps and files to the new partition.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Answer
OS 10.6.8
When Snow Leopard is installed, it will most likely be an earlier version (eg OS 10.6.3). After installation, simply go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and do updates until you are at OS 10.6.8.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

can i install snow leopard on a macbook pro and an imac?
I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. Can I install Snow Leopard on both using one disk? Or do I have to purchase two versions of Snow Leopard?
- Asked by Jarrod S from Mount Vernon

Answer
The same disk will work on both (as long as both have Intel-processors).
However, you should have a license for both, and that is obtained by buying the disk. Currently Snow Leopard only comes as a single license package, but it used to also come as a Family Pack, with licenses for up to 5 macs in household.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

No. The Snow Leopard DVD is a full installer.
You should make sure that you meet the hardware requirements for Snow Leopard though: 1GB RAM and an Intel processor with a DVD Drive and 5 GB of disk space are the main requirements.- Answered by Rodney W from Niddrie

i am running mac OS X 10.5.8, how can i update to 10.6.8
- Asked by Gaetano T from Sydney
- Feb 5, 2013

Answer
STEP 1: Make sure your Mac is Intel-based (not PowerPC) and that it has at least 1GB of memory.
STEP 2: Purchase the Snow Leopard disc (Snow Leopard is not available as a download).
STEP 3: Install Snow Leopard. After installation and the Mac has been restarted, go to Apple Menu and select "Software Update" to update to OS 10.6.8.
Recommendation: Install Snow Leopard to a separate partition from OS 10.5.8. During install, the installer will search the Mac for earlier OS installations, and ask if you want to import OS settings, files and applications from the old partition. Do this and you will keep your OS 10.5.8 installation intact while having everything copied over to the new partition for OS 10.6. You can start up from either partition. The reason I did this is because some of my drivers for printers and scanners were not compatible with Snow Leopard, and until I could find the correct drivers, I could still start up from the old OS to use my printers and scanner. It also kept all my data intact in case of power outage during installation.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

You can upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.6 if you have a Mac with an Intel processor and if you buy the Mac Box Set. Go to the apple online store and search for Mac box set. The box set also comes with iLife.
