Can I buy additional batteries w/o having to buy the charger?

Answer
No you can't. Some other brands of a similar size will work, eg Sanyo Eneloop 2000mAh work fine. Funny thing though, buying six Eneloop batteries will cost almost the same as buying another charger with six batteries from Apple!

does the amber light remains steady or flashing?
- Asked by Maria Rosa C from Rio De Janeiro

Best Answer
The amber light is steady if it is charging.
If the amber light is flashing it means that there is some problem with charging the batteries, maybe they aren't compatible with the charger, they are in the wrong way around or they are defective.- Answered by Shaun J from Belmont North

Based on the product page, yes, you should be able to:
"Thanks to an intelligent power management system, the Apple Battery Charger uses less power once your batteries are fully charged, making it one of the most energy-efficient rechargeable battery solutions ever."
However, for maximum life, you should not leave the batteries plugged in all the time.- Answered by Stephen W from Tinton Falls

The charger detects when the batteries are full and stops.
The maximum charge time is 4.5hours if the batteries are empty.
If the two batteries are at different charge levels when they are inserted, each battery is finished separately. The indicator will indicate done when both batteries are finished.- Answered by Joseph J from Chandler

Do these batteries use the Sanyo eneloop technology? Also, how many mAh do these have?
I'm curious if they can retain a charge without draining. the Eneloop batteries come pre-charged and don't lose their charge over time if left idle. Just wondering what Apple is using. ( Eneloop batteries usually have a white cap on top around the contact )

Best Answer
Yes, these batteries are apparently low self-discharge NiMH batteries, like the Sanyo Eneloop batteries, otherwise they wouldn't retain 80% of their charge after a year. It's not clear yet if they are just rebranded Eneloops.

will it charge the magic mouse batteries
I thought the Magic Mouse batteries were "AAA" - will it work with them?
Maybe I am remembering this wrong.

Best Answer
Magic Mouse batteries are AA but the ones that come with the mouse are not rechargeable, so they will not work. Any NiMH rechargeable AA's will work.
Once the initial batteries drain, this is a great way to keep 2 Apple wireless input devices going indefinitely. 4 AA's for keyboard/mouse and 2 in the charger.- Answered by Dylan Q from Austin

What is the starting battery life percentage with a Magic Mouse? Apple BT Keyboard?
I have 2200 Energizer batteries (that were charged by a pure garbage 15-min Energizer recharger) in my Magic Mouse. When fully charged and cooled down 3 hrs later, the percentage starts from approx. 72%, not 100%. Do Apple's batteries start out at less than 100%? One reviewer mentioned the BT keyboard started at 81%.

I have a Mighty Mouse (not a Magic Mouse). Even with fully-charged NiMH batteries, the charge percentage never shows more than about 70-75%. Same with the wireless keyboard.
The battery charge display is calibrated for alkaline batteries, not NiMH. Alkaline batteries start at 1.5V and the voltage drops relatively quickly as they discharge. NiMH batteries start at 1.2V, and the voltage stays pretty constant until they are nearly discharged. Software that's calibrated to show the remaining charge in an alkaline battery won't show the charge accurately for NiMH batteries. Any brand of battery will behave this way. It doesn't indicate a problem with the batteries; they are just different than alkaline.
Maybe Apple will update the software so it can show the charge more accurately for NiMH batteries.- Answered by Robert D from Nashua

How long do the batteries last on a full charge cycle, and what is the starting percentage… with the Magic Mouse? with the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard?
I'm not sure why Apple pulled my question a few days ago. There was no profanity and it was respectfully commented on one time.
My question might help sway many of the recent negative reviews.
Whenever I've used 2200 mAh Energizer batteries in my Magic Mouse, the percentage has always started at 76% or lower, and never consistent. I was informed rechargeables are only 1.2v compared to regular alkaline which are 1.5v. Perhaps, the software meter in OS X may not be taking the lower voltage into consideration?
The NiMh Energizer batteries in conjunction with the Energizer 15-min charger I own are AWFUL. They only last 3 to 5 days depending on a bunch of variables. I would like to know, BASED ON EXPERIENCE, how long these Apple batteries last on a full cycle using their charger. I don't think anyone wants to buy another dud no matter what statistics tell us.- Asked by Scott K from Westwood

I have six total batteries and will be using four at a time in my mouse and keyboard. Should I store the other two empty or charged?
I don't know if its better to store the batteries empty, full, or if it even matters.
- Asked by Joshua D from East Wenatchee

Answer
Keep the other 2 spares charged.
These batteries retain their power over time (like 1 or 2 years).
When the batteries in your mouse are depleted, change them using the spares.
Charge the batteries from the mouse and keep them as spares.
When the batteries in the keyboard are depleted, change with this 2 spares.
Then charge the batteries from the keyboard and keep as spares.
And so on...- Answered by Chee Seng T

How long do the batteries last once charged?
Say I charge one set for spare when one set runs out. how long do they last just sitting around?
Or is it best to leave them flat and start charging when the battery in my item (keyboard/mouse) gets to 10% etc? then swap over and leave the old batteries until the next item goes flat- Asked by Aaron S from Auckland

Why doesn't the amber light on the battery charger change to green to indicate that the batteries are charge?
- Asked by Carol E from Quechee
- Oct 7, 2011

Best Answer
This could be due to multiple reasons:
1) The batteries are faulty one way or another, are you charging the official Apple ones?
2) The charger is defective.
3) If the light is still orange then the batteries just plain aren't fully charged yet. Leave them in over night and if any light at all in on come morning, you'll know that option 1 or 2 is the answer. I say this because once the batteries charge, the light will turn green, but then the light will turn off completely eventually.- Answered by Michael S from Montreal
