No, still infrared. It just might have a stronger signal, thus the "anywhere in the room" part.

Can I start tv shows on iPod classic when used with the IR docking station or does it start only music like the old remote?
With the old remote I have to start tv shows on my iPod classic manually at my iPod even when it is connected to the docking station. It would be nice if this remote allows me to scroll down in the menu to tv shows and start them with the remote.

Answer
When communicating with iPods and iPhones, the Universal Dock is required for the remote to function. The songs are then controlled on the iPod/iPhone, not the stereo.

Does the apple remote work with the 3G dock?

Answer
No, as the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone dock do not have IR receivers. If you want to use the Apple Remote with the iPhone, you will need the Apple Universal Dock which has an iPhone dock adapter and an IR sensor compatible with the Apple Remote.
