Will this card work with the 4 x 512GB SSD option available when ordering a Mac Pro?
I'd like to make 2 volumes, each RAID 1 to get the speed of SSD with the reliability of mirroring for a VCS/SCM server. One volume for the VCS data and the other volume for boot and the VCS journal.

AnswerRE: Henry M from Lafayette
I believe your answer is correct, but are we looking at different Apple websites? Footnote #7 on the Mac Pro specs page (/macpro/specs.html on www.apple.com) is "1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less." It says nothing about the Mac Pro RAID card on the Mac Pro specs page I can see.- Answered by Gary P from Eden Prairie

What is a replacement for Apple RAID Card
I'm looking for a suitable replacement for the Apple Raid Card. I have replaced the battery (Apple service), and now the machine is again crashing. Prefer not to buy the same card again.

Do you need to have the RAID card installed if you only use external RAID drives and don't use the internal drives? I'm new to RAID.

AnswerNo, absolutely not.
This card is only if you want to use the internal drive bays in a Mac Pro to have a RAID 5 array.
If you want anything else on the internal drives (RAID 0 or RAID 1) and you're better off using Disk Utility.
If you've got an external RAID chassis, then you use the RAID hardware in the chassis, not this card.- Answered by Kai H from Manchester

What does the battery exactly do in this card? I know it "protects" the write cache, but a little more in details?
I have 2 cards and both batteries failed, I have forced on the write cache and everything seems to work fine, what is the risk in running my mac like that????
I use it mainly for recording with nuendo, but my standard session is about 100 tracks.- Asked by Corrado C from Napoli

AnswerIf the Mac loses power during a write to the RAID, the battery will save the cache until either power is restored and the write is completed, or the battery eventually dies and the write cache is lost. The battery should last 72 hours, which in theory gives you enough time to get power back to the Mac Pro.

AnswerI just bought a mac pro with the raid card. The answer is no. Everything goes through the raid card. I'm going to try to get a eSata card and try to boot from an external drive. eSata should be about 3 times faster the FW800.
