logic pro 7 academic upgrade to Logic Studio
I have Logic Pro 7.1 Is there a way to tell if you have the Academic version? It just says Retail on the box although the serial number does have an A at the end of it. I'm hoping i can upgrade to Logic studio. Thanks.

Answer
4 ways to tell that you have the academic version:
1) you paid $299 for Logic 7 Pro instead of $999 which was the price at the time of Logic 7 Pro
2) your USB dongle for Logic 7 Pro is marked Academic
3) when you start Logic, the opening splash page will say Logic 7 Pro Academic Version.
4) Your Logic 7 installation DVDs will be marked Academic, and serial number will end in "A"- Answered by Andrew G from Santa Fe

Saving files from Logic Express when upgrading to Logic Studio...
Within the next few weeks I will be upgrading from Logic Express 9 to the Logic Studio package. I'm enquiring to whether I can be able to save and open the files from Logic Express when upgraded, so work can be continued on Studio? If not, are there any ways or alternatives around this?

what interface do i need to run logic 9

Answer
Logic will run with any number of different Audio interfaces. Im assuming thatʻs the type of "interface" you mean. What you buy depends on your needs and your budget. If your budget is limited, go with something affordable so that you can invest in a good mic and a midi controller. The synths, organs and pianos in Logic are some of the best out there. They are also handy to have for laying grooves and beats, with or without "MPC style drum pads. Regular piano style keys work just as well. But I ʻve digressed somewhat. Bottom line: evaluate your needs and go from there. Are you going to be strictly recording audio, or doing Midi Sequencing? or a combination? are you a composer or recording others in a studio?
If you can afford it, I recommend the Apogee Ensemble which integrates nicely with Logic and is made to run on Apple computers. Superb sound quality!- Answered by Edward K from Hanapepe

Yes, as long as you have your XSkey (not a serial number, just the EXkey). I had the same dilemma, I was running Logic Platinum 6, and the upgrade worked fine.
From the install booklet;
-If you are installing the upgrade version, a dialog appears, asking you to either enter the serial number of your earlier Logic version, or to connect your XSKey to one of your computer’s USB ports.
-If you are upgrading from Logic Express 5, Logic Gold 5, Logic Platinum 5, Logic Express 6, Logic Gold 6, Logic Platinum 6, Logic Pro 6, or Logic Pro 7, connect your XSKey to one of your computer’s USB ports.
-If you are upgrading from Logic Express 7 or higher, or from a previous version of ÂÂLogic Studio, enter the appropriate serial number.

Does Logic Studio work with my Mbox 2 Pro and does it bring a new dongle key or can I use my Logic pro 7 key?
- Asked by Sara C from North Bergen

Answer
You use your Logic Pro 7 dongle key but for installation of the Logic Studio upgrade version. Buy the upgrade, keep your old key in the USB slot during the upgrade process and once you are up and running, you can take the key out if you want (unlike LP7). The danger is that you lose the dongle since you won't need it again until the next upgrade, unless Apple does away with the dongle requirement for those with LP7 as the last full version, which seems likely.

Do I have to have a version of Logic Studio or Logic Pro to get this, or is this a full version already? Is this an upgrade?
I am currently using garage band to make songs on my MacBook (the white one). I want to upgrade to Logic Studio and want to get this but I'm not sure if this is an upgrade and I have to have a version of LogicStudio of Logic Pro installed already? What is the difference between this $199 version and the LogicStudio for $499? Thanks

Does Logic Studio record vocal tracks well?
I have been fooling around with garageband that came with my new imac. But it sounds thin and very tin like. Now, I am no music engineer... I just wanted to know if Logic studio would offer better vocal sound or do I need to get Pro Tools or something else? Thank you

Answer
I have a feeling that if you used the same setup as you did with GarageBand, your vocals would sound the same in Logic.
The reason for this is Logic will record your audio 'un-effected'. Meaning, it will be a clear example of exactly what is coming in through the mic. Once it's recorded, you can add the effects you like including loudness maximizers, compressors, reverb etc., to really beef up the vocal -- make the vocal shiny!
A good idea is to first set up a decent recording environment and use a good mic to get the best quality audio in. Of course that doesn't only mean loudness. Next, get some good audio plugins to help you effect the audio so it stands out the way you'd like. I.e., like more reverb? Compression? Etc.
IMHO, Logic records audio perfectly. Using ProTools or any other software will not do a better job if you have the same setup. What will help is what you do with the vocal setup, and the audio after its recorded.- Answered by Azam P from Mississauga

Hi KG.
Well, iMacs are good computers. I run Pro Tools LE 8 on my 2.8GHz Core Duo ( an older model ) with 4GB RAM without _many_ issues.
The main caveat is that iMacs are essentially not upgradeable excepting RAM ( which would need to be installed in matching pairs -- in other words if you get a computer with 4GB RAM in a 2x2 GB pair configuration, and you want to upgrade ( with 4 slots ) ... you will only be able to add 2GB-sized memory for the addt'l slots ( although DDR3 is a spec i am not entirely familiar with )
With iMac, realize you WILL have a great system but will NOT be able to run many DSP-based plugin software programs that require PCI-e card slots or the equivalent.
As far as which model, I personally would go for 8GB of RAM in the 2x4GB configuration with the i5 ( don't really need the i7 unless you have the cash ) AND a 27" screen definitely... DAW work requires a LOT of space.
Good Luck! iMacs have treated me well so I think they may be fine- Answered by James J from Charlotte

7 to 9: Upgrade Installation on a new MacBook Pro?
What do I need to install on the new MacBook Pro before I can run the Logic 9 Upgrade?

I installed the Logic 9 upgrade on a brand new MacBook Pro with just the Logic 9 upgrade install discs, the Logic 7 dongle and the serial. No need to install Logic 7 first. I repeat, NO NEED TO INSTALL LOGIC 7 BEFORE UPGRADING TO LOGIC 9!

Do I need Logic Pro or Logic Studio?
Hello,
So I am new to music production. I have a MacBook Pro and I am looking for a good DAW to use. I want to get Logic since it is made by Apple and should work flawlessly on my MacBook Pro. If I just want to make Hip Hop beats on my MacBook Pro, would I need to get Logic Studio or would Logic Pro be fine to use? What would Logic Studio do that Logic Pro would not be able to do?- Asked by Austin S from Grand Blanc
