which HDTV works with 2 yr old mac mini
This version is limited to one display. I have 2GB of RAM in my dual core Mac Mini and want to convert this into my entertainment center. I've been told I'm limited to 30" max and I'm OK with that but I want to know what is the "best" configuration. Thank you very much.

Answer
30" is the max if your using a computer display. I have my Mac Mini, with only one display port hooked up to my Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma and it work's great. If your looking for a good TV for a Mac Mini, try to find one with a DVI in and that is 1080p.

I bought this cable to use my MacBook Pro (2010) with the NVIDIA 3D Vision and a 120Hz 3D-Ready monitor (AW2310), under Windows using bootcamp. Using the standard mini displayport to DVI, it was not able to achieve this (only let me do 60Hz), but was successful with the dual-link adapter. When booted into OS X however, in Display settings under System Preferences, I was not able to select 120Hz, only 60Hz. Hope this helps you out.

Do I need to take up one of my USB ports on my MBP when using this dual link mini-dvi cable?
I just upgraded my MBP to the latest model. It no longer has an input DVI port as the old one did. I also have a MAC 30" monitor. I am not sure if I need to take up one of the 2 USB ports for theDual-Link DVI adapter. I have the mini-dvi port plugged in, but am a bit stumped as if or why I would need to take up one USB ports.

This adapter does need to be connected to a USB port for power in order to function. To alleviate the port blockage, it has a USB repeated built into the unit itself. However, there have been many people experiencing screen flickering and distortion due to the USB ports on laptops providing insufficient power. The solution is to plug the USB cable powering the dongle into a powered hub or AC iphone/ipod charger.

Does the Mini DisplayPort on the new 13" MacBook Pro (OCT '09) put out an audio signal as well as the video signal, or is it 'video-out' only?
I Need to connect my new 13" MacBook Pro to 32" Philips HDTV. I have Apple Bluetooth wireless/keyboard. I hope to use the MacBook as a desktop with the display closed, using the Philips HDTV for display and audio. My TV has 3 HDMI ports and 1 USB 2.0 port.
Online AppleStore salesperson told me that for the VIDEO signal I needed an adapter to convert the Mac's Mini DisplayPort to DVI, then plug into a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on other, to then plug into the TV's HDMI port. To get AUDIO signal from the Mac to the TV she told me I needed a "Y" cable to plug into the Mac's 'Audio-out' Headphones Jack. Said without this cable the TV's speakers wouldn't work, and I'd only get sound from the MacBook Pro's built-in speakers.
Descriptions for HDMI cables at several online stores claimed they were all-in-one cables carrying both video and audio signals. Will the HDMI cable do everything, or do I still need the "Y" cable from the Mac's headphone jack to power the TV speakers?- Asked by J. Todd M from East Haven

The mini displayport, as its name suggests, only provides video output. So even if you were to fit adapters and result in an HDMI cable connection to your TV, only video will be produced.
Audio output from your MBP only comes from the audio in/out jack, therefore the Apple Store guy was right in that you have to get a Y-adapter cable to connect to your L/R audio input on your TV.
However, you have to check that your TV is able to play video through HDMI input AND audio through L/R input simultaneously, otherwise it will not work out after all.- Answered by Jonathan C from Temecula

Can I use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to drive two monitors from my MacBook Pro (17

Dual-Link does not mean 2 DVI outputs. Its just a very misleading term used to indicate that it will carry a higher quality signal than the standard DVI adapter. If the macbook pro had more than one mini-display port, you could run multiple displays using multiple adapters, but it only has one so you will have to stick with the laptop's screen as the second screen with the monitor.
There might be a third-party product that splits the video signal in a DVI cable, but it would only work if you wanted to clone your desktop (mirror), not extend it.- Answered by Ben S from Golden

Is the Mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI adaptor the right connector to connect the new 27" apple cinema display to a late 2008 MacPro?
- Asked by Holly B from Grand Forks
- Oct 20, 2010

Answer
No, it's converting in the wrong direction. This is to connect a monitor that requires a DVI-DL connect (most 30" displays) to a machine that only has Mini DisplayPort output (all recent Mac laptops, MacMini, and iMacs).
You may not need an adaptor depending on what video card is in the MacPro -- is there a small not-quite square port on the video card, besides the larger DVI connector? Wikipedia has pictures of what MiniDisplay Port looks like. If you have that port, you'll be able to connect new Apple displays without an adaptor.
Gefen and Altona both make DVI to Mini Display Port converters, but it a quick search didn't find them on Apple's site -- you might need to try Amazon or some other store.- Answered by Joseph H from Upper Marlboro

It entirely depends on the resolution of your 22" display and the connectors present on the screen. If the display is DVI compatible and 1920x1200, choose Apple's MB570Z/A instead - it's far cheaper and will do exactly what you require.
This product is suitable for displays up to 30" and a resolution of 2560x1600.- Answered by Andy S from London

Does the Mini DisplayPort support analog video and if so can I use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI with a DVI to VGA adapter
- Asked by Joel S from Mercersburg
- Oct 27, 2009

Answer
yes. be sure you need the mini displayport - dual link dvi adapter though -- if you're connecting to a TV then the resolution you're shooting for is actually ~1080x1920, for which a mini displayport - vga adapter will work just fine. the dual link adapter is for if you need resolutions Higher than 1200 x 1920, which TV's don't have (that would make them 1200i or 1200p !)

My macbook (mid 2008) mini display port is bigger than the new mini display port plug, is there an adapter to get?
Trying to plug my 30" Cinema Display (late 2008) into my macbook and imac with this adapter, but the mini display port plug (male) is much smaller than the ports on my computers. Is there an adapter for the 2 sizes to work? Or did I just waist $100 on a plug I can't use?

You need another piece of hardware, which falls into one of two major categories:
1) A Matrox Dualhead2go is a device that "tricks" your laptop into thinking that the two displays are a single display. Due to this trick, it has some limitations, but provides good graphics performance. The device costs between $100-200.
2) A USB graphics card, such as the EVGA UV Plus+, which run about $60. These devices give you another display without tricking your computer, but do not offer the same level of graphics performance that the Matrox does. These are great for looking at big spreadsheets/documents, but not great for movies or games.- Answered by John G from Madison

will the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter work with my 24 in Samsung SyncMaster 216nw Monitor?

Answer
Yes, your monitor should work with this adapter. You will need a DVI cable (male/male) to connect the adapter to the monitor. Be aware that this accessory gets less than outstanding reviews when it comes to reliability!

Will this adapter work with the smaller 23-inch Apple Cinema Display?
More broadly, is a dual-link DVI cable or adapter compatible with standard DVI signals?
- Asked by John H from Seattle

Best Answer
Yes. The 23-inch apple cinema display (and anything with a resolution under 1920x1200) won't be able to utilize the full the capabilities of this adapter, but you could buy this as a way to "futureproof" yourself in case you get a monitor with a resolution equal to or greater than 1920x1200 in the future.

Better to use this or a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adaptor?
I have a Dell U2711 with both DVI-D and DisplayPort inputs at 2560x1440. I have been using this DVI-D adaptor for about a month with a new Mac Mini. Works OK except that when the Mac Mini wakes up from sleep, sometimes the monitor has video snow and I have to power cycle it. (Yes, I am running 1.03 firmware).
There is a well-reviewed Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adaptor made by Altaz, on Amazon. Normally I would have bought this in the first place, but I was worried that it was not sold by the Apple Store. It's much cheaper with much better reviews than this product.
So should I try the Altaz adaptor? Is it better to go with Mini Display Port to DisplayPort rather than Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D? Is it a red flag that Apple does not sell a Mini Display Port to Display Port solution, but only the Mini Display Port to DVI-D product?- Asked by Lewis S from Berkeley

Answer
Actually it turns out that the mini-display port to display port adaptor has reports of problems with the U2711, so I decided to stay with this mini-display port to dvi-d adaptor. I do get the snow on waking up from sleep a few times a week, I just turn the monitor off, then on and it goes away, so I lose about 20 seconds/week.
