Yes, as long as you meet two requirements:
(1) You have the new series of MacBook Pros with the mini display plug, which is significantly smaller than the old mini DVI plugs.
(2) You purchase a cable that has one male DVI-D end (to plug into this adapter) and one male HDMI end (to plug into the TV). There are two types of DVI-D cables. This will only carry single-link, although both types will physically plug in and work.
p.s. This type of cabling system will not carry audio to your TV since DVI-D cannot carry audio, so you will need to hook an external sound source to your MPB if you want greater sound than your computer speakers can produce.- Answered by Tony B

IF your MBA is a late 2010 (ie. Latest) model, the Mini DisplayPort will carry audio as well as video. So - IF your TV has a HDMI port, you would be better off buying a Moshi Mini DP to HDMI adapter, so the audio can play through the TV.

you need the mini display port to DVI adapter.
you also need a digital cable with DVI male on one end and HDMI on the other.
the only difference between the output of your computer and and the HDMI cable is audio. Most digital sets nowadays serve very well as an external monitor. most have an audio input dedicated to play with a certain HDMI port. you would need an audio cable that has 1/8" mini stereo male on one end with the normal red/white RCA male plugs on the other end.
On the vizio in my office, I think it will play audio over any of the 3 inputs. I believe the Mitsibushi in the living room requires me to use HDMI port # 3 in order to sync up the two inputs.- Answered by Tim O from Las Vegas

To connect your MacBook Pro to a monitor that supports DVI-D *only*, you'll need this adapter with a DVI-D cable. You can recognize this cable by looking at the pin configuration -- DVI-D will have 2 sets of 9 pins with a small gap between them, followed by a long flat pin. See Wikipedia's page about Digital Visual Interface for more detail. The "Connector" section has easily readable images that might be useful.
That having been said, most monitors support DVI-I, which will support either a DVI-I or DVI-D cable (or even DVI-D Dual Link). But if you're sure your monitor supports DVI-D only, disregard this.- Answered by James T from Brush Prairie

You will need to use a 3.5mm jack to RCA (black and red - Left and Right) cable as the MBP will only output audio from the headphone jack. This is probably the cheapest option to get sound from your Mac to your TV. Quality will not be the best as it will be analogue.

That will depend on the projector, however projectors typically have DVI and / or VGA connectors.
Looking at the specifications for Macbook early 2009 you have a Mini-DVI connector from your Macbook.
That means you would need the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI, and / or the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter/s.
I'd get both if you are connecting to a variety of projectors and you don't know what the connector on the projector is, or will be.- Answered by Jason S from Waverley

Answer
We need to know what kinds of inputs your TV has. Most modern TVs accept DVI directly. Does your TV only take video coax? Does it have S-video in? What are the options here? Posting the exact model of the TV may make it possible to answer the question.
